Term 1 is coming to an end and
we have so much to celebrate and
acknowledge. Congratulations to
all the Year 7 students who have
had such a wonderful start to
their high school journey. All
students have settled in very well
and are making excellent
progress.
We have some sporting stars at Leeming ESC.
Congratulations to Tarkin Barker and Caden Sharp who
will be representing WA at the Special Olympics
National Games in Adelaide during the school holidays.
Well done to Ben Shaw and Raynor Keane who recently
competed in Sydney for the Junior Athletics
Championships. Ben came 3rd in the 800m and Raynor
ran very well in his cross country race. I encourage all
of our students to get involved in sporting events and
clubs outside of school. There are so many
opportunities available and sport is such a great way to
connect with the community and to learn valuable life
skills.
Thank you to all the parents who attended and
contributed to our Parent Network Meeting earlier in
the term. Mrs Houden went through the WADSA
(Western Australian Disabled Sports Association)
website http://www.wadsa.org.au/.
Through discussions and sharing of information with
parents we were able to collate some great contacts
for sporting, leisure and recreation opportunities
available in the community. This information was
emailed to parents and will be made available on our
school website.
Thank you to our school board member Digby Claydon
for supporting Miss Allomes to successfully apply for a
Sporting Schools Grant through the Australian Sports
Commission. The funding covers costs for resources
and support to deliver an after school tennis program.
Funds will be used to purchase tennis equipment and a
professional coach to deliver the after school tennis
program in term two. Miss Allomes will be sending
home further information about the program early
next term.
Students enjoyed another visit from the Gilmore
Clontarf Academy this term. They participated in
traditional Aboriginal Dance and produced some
beautiful art work which is displayed in the
Administration Office. The partnership with Gilmore
Clontarf Academy began last year and has provided
wonderful hands on learning experiences for our
students to understand and learn more about
Aboriginal Culture. Thank you Mrs Houden and Mrs
Kaiser for coordinating and organising engaging
activities for the day.

Ben Shaw, from ESC 7, recently returned from Sydney
where he competed in the Australian Junior Athletics
Championships. Ben was third in the 800 metres,
competing in the Athletes with Disability category
(AWD).
Congratulations, Ben!
In celebration of Nowruz - Persian New Year, Mahshid
has set up a display in ESC 2. Nowruz is a time for
reflection and growth, acknowledgement of what has
been and what is to come. Mahshid did a great
presentation to her class and included photos and
traditional clothing in her display.
Leeming ESC has a new app that can be downloaded from
iTunes or Google Store.
NOTE: Please be aware that at present there are two apps
for Leeming ESC. Please make sure you select the
Skoolbag one NOT Theme Solutions. If you have previously
downloaded the Theme Solutions app we apologise for the
inconvenience but there are more functions available on
Skoolbag. Please download the app and take a moment to
see what is available. There is information about the
school (term dates, school development days, stationery
list), newsletters, uniform shop, canteen menu etc. Check
out the calendar, this will keep you up to date on activities
planned and if the venue is offsite a map will show you the
location.
The school will use the app to send messages to groups of
people e.g. from a particular class, afterschool
bushrangers, school council members or the whole school
community. To set up the group messages you would like
to receive on the bottom right of the home page select
‘More’, then ‘Setup Push Notifications’, then turn on the
notifications you wish to receive. Messages can also be
sent to the whole school. This does not need to be
selected.
eForms is another good function of the App. Change of
Details and Absentee Notifications can be submitted
directly to school via the app and in future permission notes
will also be available. We hope this app will be a
convenient way we can further enhance the communication
process between school and home. Links are below

Attending school every day is important
Western Australian law stipulates that all school-aged
children must go to and attend school every day.
Developing the habit of going to school every day is
vitally important so your child does not miss out on
important ideas and skills they need for future learning.
Learning is cumulative. If your child misses a day, it is
harder for them to catch up.
You can help by ensuring your child is arriving at school
on time; making sure they get nutritious meals and
enough sleep; whenever possible, making
appointments with doctors, dentists and specialists, and
making holiday plans during school holidays and not
during the school term. It is a Department of Education
requirement to get principal permission if holidays are
taken within the school term.
If your child is unwell and unable to go to school, please
let the school know straight away. Next term, Leeming
SHS ESC will be using an automated SMS program that
will send a text message if your child is absent.

How to teach children
Body Safety & Abuse Prevention
A WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS & CARERS These workshops have been funded by the Non Government Centre Support for non-school organisations program. Date: 8th May 2018 10am to 12pm Venue: Cockburn Wetland Education Ctr, 184 Hope Road, Bibra Lake Parking: Parking information will be emailed to attendees Online Registration: https://ddwa.org.au/events/ Information: [email protected] or 9420 7230 (M, W, F) Cost: Free—Registration includes morning tea
Children with disability are more at risk of abuse than
other children.
Do you know what you would do in a situation where
your child disclosed information about abuse or they
told you ‘one of the other children had really rude
photos’?
Often parents don’t want to think about dealing with a
situation like this because it’s scary and they hope it
won’t ever happen to their child.
What would you do? Are you confused about how to
teach your child to be wary of potential harm, without
overloading them with fear, wrapping them in cotton
wool, or giving them so much information that their
innocence is damaged? Would you know what tried and
true steps to take in the event a situation occurred?
In this workshop, Holly will explore Protective
Behaviour Concepts including
Theme reinforcement OK to say “no” Yes/Safe/Comfortable feelings No/Unsafe/Uncomfortable feelings Three safety questions Secrets Safety continuum Secret enablers Risking on purpose Cyber safety Early warning signs Safety team Protective interrupting Persistence One-step removed Public and private Problem solving All attendees will receive a FREE copy of Holly’s guide

On Friday 16th March, Leeming ESC took part in the
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. At
Leeming ESC we want to open up the conversations and
talk about positive action to addressing bullying. This
day was to raise awareness and make a united stand for
a world free from bullying. The students and staff
participated in decorating a canvas with coloured hand
prints and the words Bullying! No Way! scribed on it.
We also ran a poster competition for the students with
messages about anti bullying. It was hard to pick a
winner for the competition but Ella Lowrey’s poster
really stood out. It was great to see so many classes and
students get involved in the initiative and we will hang
the canvas where it can be a constant reminder.
We also have had some special visitors Wendy, Fazlin
and Cassie who were from the Physical Education and
Sports Teacher Academy in Singapore. They visited our
Centre for 2 days to look at our inclusive Physical
Education programs and to see how we program and
plan for students with disabilities. There were lots of
questions asked and lots of resources shared between
all parties. It was great to hear about their schooling in
Singapore and discuss the differences in teaching
Physical Education. We have now formed a good
professional relationship with them which we hope will
continue in the future.

Term 1 has just zoomed past and we can’t believe how
much learning we’ve managed to squeeze in. The ESC 6
students have settled in beautifully at Leeming ESC, and
have started to form some meaningful friendships and
demonstrated such high school maturity already. We all
enjoyed term 1, and the highlights were our option
classes (especially PE and Science), our Fishability
excursion in week 9 and learning about different
celebrations such as Chinese New Year, St Patrick’s Day
and Harmony Day. Have a look below to see what our
favourite parts of term 1 were:
Taine - My highlight of term 1 was using the exercise
bike. I also love playing on the trampoline.
Orlando - I like sports because we get to play T-ball. I
love woodwork because we made a pot mat. I like
cooking because we made sandwich wraps.
Henry - I enjoy doing maths and science and I like the
canteen because I like buying macaroni and cheese. I
like hanging out with Raymond and I like hot coffee
from the library. I like doing DI.

On Friday in week 6 the Year 8 class took off for our
excursion to Sculptures by the Sea in Cottesloe. We had
a fantastic day experiencing all of the amazing
sculptures and we lucked out with beautiful weather.
The students were excited and dazzled by the
sculptures and are very keen to share with everyone
their comments about the day:
Adam - My favourite sculpture was the donut and the
plane and the swirly colourful fish.
Jack - I like beach, Sculptures by the Sea. I like going
with my friends. I like seeing the fish and the twisty
plane. My favourite was the spinning rainbow.
Sian - My favourite sculpture was the donut. I really like
the beach. I had a really fun time because I was with my
friends.
Tia - My favourite sculpture was the butterfly sculpture
and the dog one. I like the dog one because it reminds
me of my dog Honey. I like the butterfly one because it
made me think I could fly. I had a really fun time
because it was my birthday.
Poppy - My favourite sculptures were the Inspired by
Rosie sculpture. I liked it because it looked like the sun. I
had a really fun time because. I liked looking at the
sculptures.
Charlotte - My favourite sculpture was the rainbows
fish and the spinning rainbows. I liked the bubble one
because it was different and it was nice to see different
sculptures.
Nabillah - I loved the butterfly wings sculpture. I like
going on excursions with my friends and learning about
different things.
YuJia - I liked the beach and lunch. I had fun.
Jayelan - The way to inspire people is to make their
imagination open up. Of all the exhibits only two roused
my interest. I elect that the best and the loudest to
bring the crowd were the Sea Mirror and the Window
to Nature. These educate the public to see themselves
as part of the story of our environment.

The students of ESC 12 have been working hard in every
lesson for the second half of this term. We have been
reading “ANZAC Sons; Five Brothers on the Western
Front” and learning about the conditions in the
trenches. We will be completing the unit of work with a
visit to the Memorial in Kings Park in week 11.
Below are some statements from the class on what they
have learned.
Josh - The summer was better when they fought in the
war because it wasn’t raining.
Dillon - The soldiers fought through the seasons some
were harder than others.
Kane - They have bush coloured outfits. They wore a
slouch hat with a badge on one side only.
Luca - We wrote postcards to be like the soldiers.
Lauren - Australian soldiers coped better in the heat.
Ellie - The soldiers lived in trenches when they were on
the battlefield.
Tania - Some of them died.
Some of the postcards ESC 12 wrote, imagining they
were in the trenches:

ESC 5 are lucky to be welcoming a new student, Aidan
Mulchrome and his family to the Leeming community.
The class met Aidan when he visited the school and we
are all looking forward to Aidan starting in term 2.
The students have been incredibly impressive with their
increased responsibility and independence in their
organisation of equipment and transitioning to option
classes, tutor group, breaks, bus and pickups at the end
of the day.
These skills shined recently on a Fish-ability excursion
with Miss Gage’s class. All students are to be
commended for their excellent behaviour and the staff
felt proud of the positive feedback from Fish-ability
mentors. These amazing volunteers are dedicated to
making students smile with delight when they catch a
fish.
The students were presented with books, pencils,
bubbles and chocolate surprises. Hanna was awarded a
prize of a fishing rod for her fishing efforts. Well done to
Hanna and all the students. A warm thank you to the
parents, grandparents and siblings for coming along,
supporting the students fishing and enjoying a picnic on
a lovely sunny day. The opportunity to share the
experience with families and their contribution
immensely enriches the experience for everyone. Thank
you. We hope you can make it to our next Fish-ability
excursion, Friday May 11th 2018.

We have had a super busy term 1, but what a
sensational start to the year we have had. We have
been working on various ways to communicate and the
students have loved learning how to use these different
methods. Just before the Easter break, I brought my
rabbit into class and the students each made a beautiful
Easter card with the real life Easter bunny. They each
chose their own poem to put on the inside of the card
and I was so proud of the work they produced, it was
beautiful. I am looking forward to term 2. I would like to
thank my education assistants Nicky, Mei, Lalla and
Jackie for their hard work and dedication this term.
Below is a small collage of the photos of ESC 7 students
with my rabbit Jolene. We hope everyone has a safe and
happy break!

As part of our P1 Business unit, ESC 14 have been
investigating small businesses, in particular, coffee
businesses. Last month we visited Cyril Jackson Senior
Campus Education Support centre to investigate how
they set up their small business Bean@bility, in an effort
to create something similar at Leeming. They treated us
to morning tea and showed us around their school. This
week Cyril Jackson students came out to visit us. We
showed them our chickens, had a game of Kahoots,
served a creative morning tea and played a game of
basketball. Next term we are hoping to challenge them
to Bowling. Our students said “it is always fun to make
new friends and we hope to see them again soon”.

David M - Gateways Shopping Centre is where we went
on CBL. We learn safety around the roads. We learn
how to get on a bus. We walk to the shopping centre.
You can buy a lovely dress if you were going to the ball
for a dance. You can buy ice-cream and my favourite is
cookies and cream or vanilla.
Joshua - This term we had a class excursion to
Gateways. We learnt about different employment
positions.
Joseph - This term we have been doing work experience
at Strikers. We have to vacuum and stack the fridge. We
clean the gym.
Amasha - Our class hosted a BBQ for Bush Rangers. We
have been using the BBQ a lot in Home Economics to
show us how to cook sausages.

We have had a fantastic start this term in ESC 13.
Recently, the ESC 13 students participated in the RAC
bStreetSmart excursion held at the Perth Arena,
integrated as part of their Keys4Life learning program.
The excursion provided students with a real-world
perspective about the possibilities of driving unsafe as
trained actors and emergency service professionals role
-played a real road crash scenario on stage which
incorporated the many different emergency services
and vehicles we see and hear on the road. At first, many
of the students were challenged by the confronting
themes, however as the role-play progressed they were
able to use the real-life experience provided as a fresh
perspective of the potential risks of driving unsafely as
the event highlighted the importance of following road
safety and driving rules carefully.

It has been a very busy term for students and staff in
ESC 1 with Blue Dress Day, running our Centre Assembly
in week 11 and the Parent Expo. Through our ASDAN
studies, students organised the Blue Dress Day in
conjunction with Leeming SHS School Council to raise
awareness of people with Autism. The event raised
$957.35c which the students will be formally presenting
to the Autism Association in term 2.
I would also like to extend a special farewell to Sophia
Ackland and her family on behalf of all the staff and
students in ESC 1. We hope your move to the UK will be
smooth and we look forward to receiving many pictures
of Sophia’s travels and experiences as her year unfolds.
Embracing the vigour and speed of education in your
final year can be challenging. I am delighted though
with the progress that all students have made in ESC 1
this term to embrace those challenges, to set goals and
to achieve goals. Success is the tool that inspires us to
continue learning. Well done team!
