Head Boy and Head Girl’s MessageThe pressure is definitely building this term, with coursework deadlines to be met and exams fast approaching. However, although for us there always seems like there is too much to do and too little time to do it, we think this term has been quite productive. The School Council is once again up and running, revision sessions are underway and the planning for the much-anticipated Prom is also in progress.

Only 9 weeks left and it’ll all be over: bring on the summer, even if snow is brought with it!

Good luck to all Year 11’s in their exams.

This term has seen the reinvention of the School Council. The Council is chaired by the Head Boy and Head Girl and has representatives from each of the year groups, EAL students, the PE council and student s with SEN. The School Council will meet once a month to discuss whole school matters and concerns that are suggested by the student body of the school.

The School Council aims to encourage students, teachers and other staff to work together for the benefit of the whole school community and to provide a forum for student voice to be heard in matters concerning school life.

A School Council noticeboard is to be set up in the main hall. This will display copies of the School Council Constitution, minutes of meetings, names and photographs of council members and publicity for any forthcoming events. In addition, the minutes of meetings will be posted on the new school website so that students and parents may access them at home. A Suggestion Box will be placed next to the noticeboard in the hall as a way of allowing students to put forward items for consideration by the School Council.

Early in the summer term there will be assemblies for all year groups to give further details of the School Council and to inform students of the various ways that they can communicate with the Council. The first official meeting of the school Council is due to take place on Monday 13th May 2013 and council members will be taking time in Year Assemblies to talk to students and collect agenda items.

World Book Day Readathon with a DifferenceThis year, 60 Ruskin students from Years 7, 8 and 9 signed up to take part in a sponsored read and enjoyed a day of quiet, relaxing reading in the school library. The library was decorated with soft lighting to create an atmospheric setting, and the students arrived with blankets and slippers to make the experience cosier.

Hours were spent engrossed in a variety of novels. At the end of the day students took part in some relaxation activities complete with wave sound effects.

Money raised will be divided between ReadWell, CLIC Sargent and Roald Dahl’s Marvelous Children’s Charity.

Many thanks to family, friends, teachers and students for your sponsorship money – we raised a massive £193.88!

Wiktoria Szatkowska and Laura Boulton.

Staff and students worked hard on Friday to raise cash for Comic Relief. Activities included a Bake Sale, Doughnut Eating Competition, Sponge a Teacher and a special, Ruskin-style ‘Harlem Shake’.

The Sponge a Teacher event was a big draw and Miss O’Hare, Mr Postlethwaite and Mr Brett all got a soaking!

Hundreds of cakes were donated, decorated and devoured for a hugely successful bake sale and the doughnuts were piled up for another amazing feat of cake-munching. Mr Vitalis won the teachers’ heat, Keaton Webster won the Year 7 & 8 round and in Year 9 & 10 Joe Clulow took the title.

A massive £815 was raised – well done Ruskin!

Snowed In! Ski Trip 2013Day 1: We wake up to a metre of snow, the cars outside our hotel are now completely buried and the road up to the village is closed! Lots of the ski lifts are also closed because the chairs are buried in snow. Undeterred, we venture out for a day of skiing.

Day 2: Everyone in the group improves and we all learn to use the two-man chair and ski to the bottom of the mountain on the green run. The sun briefly comes out at lunchtime... but the blizzard returns for the afternoon.

Day 3: At last, the sun comes out! A glorious day on the mountain. Everyone has now tackled a blue run and most are attempting parallel turns. We have received good reports from the ski instructors, with the top group aiming to ski to the neighbouring village tomorrow.

Day 5: As we awoke to bright sunshine, ten skiers were keen to catch an early lift to enjoy the first run of the day. Nothing better than making the first tracks!

Overall we all had a fantastic, adventure-filled experience skiing in France. We did many activities like bum-boarding, Crepe Night (which was absolutely delicious) and social nights relaxing and chatting about various subjects. Many of us explored the village of Risoul and everyone had a great time, minus some bumps and bruises.

Berlin 2012Setting off to Manchester Airport on a cold, wintry morning in the middle of December sounds such fun. Well, that’s what 14 students and 2 teachers had to do on the 18th December as we were setting off to Berlin, the capital of Germany.

The tour of the Checkpoint Charlie museum was pretty good. We learned about the different ways people from East Berlin tried to escape into West Berlin without being killed by the guards. These ways included sneaking into cars, going over in balloons or rowing across the river.

Berlin 2012 During our tour, we learnt about the Holocaust and how Israel was formed. We also went into a replica of a gas chamber in a concentration camp. It was pitch black, and you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.

With that ordeal over, we set off to see some Christmas markets in central Berlin. Here we could either go into a department store or we could walk round into the markets to see what they were selling.

The next day we visited the Olympic Stadium. We were given a guided tour of the venue which hosted the 1936 Olympic Games and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It wasn’t just a main stadium, like in London, but many other mini-venues outside the stadium such as an outdoor swimming pool and a hockey pitch. The best part of the tour though, was that the group was given the chance to stand where Adolf Hitler stood when he opened the Olympic Games in Berlin.

Here at Ruskin we are breathing a new lease of life into the presence of rugby at the school. Within lessons we are delivering tag-rugby and after school we now have a well- attended rugby club.

The after school rugby club is not for the faint hearted with real tackling, real pressure and lots of real mud in training. The boys who have been attending have battled through awful weather, both in training and in matches, but nothing has perturbed these tough youngsters.

With the direction and coaching of Niall McGregor (Sports Development Officer and 1st Team Captain of Crewe & Nantwich), the boys have started right from the basics and have put these new skills to work very early on in a number of games against other schools.

In their last game the Year 9s and 10s worked together in a mixed squad and

competed against Malbank, a school with a long history of playing rugby. Our boys triumphantly scored two tries, but this was not enough for them to win the overall game. The man of the match was awarded to Josh Wright, for his valiant efforts and his overall progress in the sport.

With hopes of continuing training for as long as we possibly can this year, we intend to be even stronger for next year and aspire to play more games and start winning too!

Rugby at Ruskin - BOOM!

School Games Day at South Cheshire College 28th February 2013Students from years 7-10 represented Ruskin in a School Games Competition on Thursday 28th February 2013 from 9-12, at South Cheshire College. The Games were based around Olympic Games such as Fencing, sitting Volleyball, Goalball and Boccia.

Each Sport involved physical activity, sports coaching and fun competition. The Ruskin team were: Emily Bradbury, Sophie Hughes, Kyle Frisaton, Morgan Precious, Kelly Meyers, Jade Hill, Joshua Wright, Kyle Friston, Thahrin Jannati, Joshua Patrick, Daniel Kennedy, Emma Tilley and Kyle Whalley.

The Ruskin team started with sitting Volleyball. Emma played well, scoring 5 points for Ruskin. Ruskin competed

against St Thomas More and beat them. Emma, Josh Wright, Kyle and Thahrin played well.

Groups of 4 completed a rowing task, which involved rowing as far as they could for five minutes. Kyle rowed 472metres, Josh Wright 424m, Kelly 319m and Jade 354m. Kyle was the best rower overall.

Fencing was the next sport. All the Ruskin students enjoyed this. It was coached by an ex – Ruskin student.

Again the Ruskin team competed against St Thomas More. Ruskin won several matches; Kyle beating his opponent 10-3 and Josh winning 13-1. Emily and Sophie also won their matches by several points.

Students then moved onto Boccia. This was more of a challenge for them but they enjoyed it. The last sport was Goal ball. Students played 3v3, sitting on the floor. To score a point you have to roll the ball through you opponent’s goal. Ruskin students loved this!

This proved to be a very successful and thoroughly enjoyable morning for students and staff.

Ruskin Plays Host to Local TournamentOn Tuesday 12th March, Ruskin Sports College was proud to host the Year 9 South Cheshire Netball tournament in which 10 teams from all across South Cheshire competed. The competition was split into two leagues with the winners and runners up from each competing against each other to make it through to the final.

The final came down to Alsager High School and Sandbach Girls High School. Both teams played some fantastic netball and as the final whistle blew Alsager were victorious.

The Year 9 Ruskin team was challenged throughout their tournament, as some of their team players were already representing their school in other competitions. So with a couple of players down, they put on a strong display of effort and commitment. Stepping in part way through, were two of the year 7 helpers (Megan Crosby and Demi Wood), who had come along to help in the running of the tournament. They threw on their kits and bibs and joined in the Year 9 team and worked together with great camaraderie.

The tournament ran extremely smoothly, with Saskia Allen doing all of the scoring on the main spreadsheets and Megan Yoxall, Megan Crosby and Demi Wood doing all of the running to collect in score cards. When teachers from other schools arrived they were greeted by these fantastic students who made sure they had everything they needed from the score cards and league fixtures right down to the penny for the coin toss. One teacher said: ‘Oh, how lovely are those girls…they’re really helpful’.

This year Ruskin has already hosted a number of competitions, inviting both high schools and primary schools to compete using our facilities and we certainly plan to continue to host more.

Well done Ruskin!

Mrs Critchley-Goodier

Students Tia Smith, Maya Booth, Jordan Bennion, Alyx James, Charlie Crouch, Taylor Mallin, Saskia Allen, Devon Coiley, Troy Bourne and Chloe Gray have planned and taught a series of PE lessons at Gainsborough Primary School since the beginning of January.

On selected Thursdays throughout the previous months, Ruskin Sports Leaders went to Gainsborough Primary School to work with a group of Year 1 and 2 children. They led the Mini Superstars Challenge, which is a fun skills-based competitive challenge. They completed athletics activities, such as, throwing bean bags into hoops, zig zag running, speed bounce and balancing. The Year 1 and 2

children particularly enjoyed the running races. The Sports Leaders also organised games and relay races.

Charlie and Devon organised a game of bench ball which the children loved. Saskia and Chloe showed good leadership skills when organising a game of throw and catch. Tia and Maya proved to be good at motivating the younger children. The Gainsborough Year 1 and 2 teachers were impressed with the Leadership Skills demonstrated by Ruskin Students.

The Sports Leaders proved to be very popular with the Gainsborough Students who were very keen to know when their next PE lesson was!

Three Cheers for Ruskin! On the 13th February Ruskin’s Cheer team, the ‘RUSKIN REBELS’, competed against other schools from across the School Sports Partnership. This year they entered the new category of ‘Cheer’ rather than ‘Pom Dance’; this involved the team performing tumbles, strict floor routines with clear arm motions and stunts.

The team performed brilliantly on the day, although this year we were not successful in bringing home a trophy. This however did not diminish the pride that was in each of the students’ heart after all of their hard training. The team turned up to regular training sessions with Mrs Critchley-Goodier after school and through some lunch breaks too. Many students learnt new skills in lifting or flying and many

became stronger in both dance and gymnastic type motions.

They are ready and raring to perform again, so if not before, we’ll see each other again at next year’s Cheer Competition.

Squad list: Jessica Boughey, Regan Stocks, Ellie Larcombe, Klaudia Stadnik, Lauren Brookes-Tomkinson, Brooke Amison, Tia Smith, Maja Booth, Lisa Walton and Paige Suter.

Sportshall AthleticsOn Thursday 28th February, students Beth Kerr, Sophie Hughes, Demi Owen, Jess Z, Lara Tagg and Georgina Armstrong attended a Secondary Sporthall Athletics Competition at Northgate Arena, Chester. The Ruskin Year 7 Girls’ team was representing the Crewe and Nantwich area, having won the local competition.

The athletes were competing against teams such as Queens, Chester and Sandbach Girls School. The Ruskin team started with the track events. The first event was the Obstacle race which they came fourth in. Sophie ran a very fast time in the 2 lap race and came in an exciting third place. Jess had an exceptional 4 lap race and came, an impressive, first.

The team then performed the Field events: Shot Put, Triple Jump, Speed Bounce and Long Jump. Jess managed to achieve a personal best in the Standing Long Jump and came first overall. Sophie also reached her personal best and came second.

Overall, the Ruskin Athletics team came fourth out of seven teams, with such hard competition, this was excellent.

Year 6 Level 6 = Mathstars!!A group of very gifted Year 6 students, 5 from Gainsbrough Primary School and 3 from Edleston Primary School, have been attending extra maths classes at Ruskin since the start of February. Each week they dazzle Miss Rice and Mr Tomlinson with their natural ability to pick up maths problems!

From finding an nth term of a sequence to solving equations, or working with ratios and identifying and describing correlations, nothing has slowed down this group of very bright Mathstars! Whether they are playing games, solving puzzles or tackling Level 6 exam questions, nothing seems to hold them back!

They have been a pleasure to work with and help to prepare for the SATs exams in May. The Ruskin Maths Department is looking forward to offering more classes to the top Year 5 mathematicians once the Year 6s have finished their sessions in the summer term.

On Tuesday the 12th March 2013 The Ruskin Choir, the Jazz Band and two rock bands performed in the East Cheshire Schools Music Competition at Malbank School.

The Ruskin Choir were up first in their category against Malbank’s grand Ensemble of approximately 30 members. It was 7 against 30 and we felt that we had no chance. We performed to our best ability, making no mistakes, whilst looking confident and calm.

After singing our hearts out, adjudicator Grace England was smiling and we believed that we would have a chance of getting through to

the finals. However, when Malbank rose to the stage, we knew we were beaten and we completely lost all hope. Finally, the time came to announce the results. It was a nerve – wracking - sit – on – the – edge – of – your – seat moment. But guess what? WE WON! We were so proud of ourselves and we were so

amazed. The adjudicator’s comments were so pleasing to read: “A very good choir who clearly love singing and enjoy the pieces they had chosen. You are clearly proud to be part of the choir. Well done!” The Jazz Band and the Rock Band also gave very good performances, however Malbank’s excellent Big

Band won the instrumental category. All in all it was a very successful night. Well done guys!

Thank you to Mr Abbott for all your help to win. We now need to prepare for the final in May at Clonter Opera House.

…and all that jazzRuskin’s annual Jazz Club Evening took place on Tuesday 26th March 2013. The evening was a great success and featured a wide range of music from the choir, two rock bands and the school Jazz Band.

One of the highlights of the evening was a set by former student Tom Seals who gave a stunning performance on piano and vocals.

The evening ended with an impromptu encore from the choir who performed an impressive a-cappella rendition of Adele’s ‘Someone like you’. We look forward to our next performance.

Year 10 visit Chester University.

On Tuesday 26th March 2013 thirty Year 10 students visited Chester University to gain an insight into higher education.

The students went to various lectures: one on Astronomy presented by Oxford University; students from the BEd course at Derby University gave a lecture on Primary Teaching; a senior lecturer from Glyndwr University

presented on Foley Sound Effects and Manchester Metropolitan University lecturers gave us an insight into Sports Science.

Students enthused: “The Astronomy lecture was a great experience and a good chance to see what a real university lecture was like.”

Jodie Sherrell “It was a great taste of university life” Jordan Bennion.

Another university visit is planned for the summer.

A Universal Success!

Effort = Success! On Tuesday the 12th March, Gabrielle Luson and Tia Smith from Year 8, along with Amy Tomlinson and Sarah Leeke from Year 9 made their way to Manchester to represent Ruskin in the regional final of the UK Maths Team Challenge.

The event, which lasted all day, was held at Manchester University and a total of 30 schools from the region took part.

The event kicked off with a whole team challenge lasting for 45 minutes with the girls working together to answer 8 mathematical questions.

All of the girls were a credit to the school and managed to achieve an excellent 180 out of 240, placing them tenth overall!!

You can imagine that, as a group of little Year 10s walking in big people territory, we were scared. Like, terrified. It felt like Year 7 all over again. But it didn’t take us long to realise that the teachers and the pupils were all very welcoming to us visitors. They were more interested in their college work which impressed us. We soon relaxed.

The South Cheshire College Media day was incredible. We walked into a huge green room like you see on TV and couldn’t keep our eyes away. Impressive? You could say that. The leaders of the Media Department explained what we would be doing and made a few jokes to keep us at ease, they were so nice, and it felt ok to laugh. Then we had the chance to meet other media students from other high schools and mingle.

I was put into a group with an incredibly talented actor to-be, a student who was really good with a camera (who of course I just called ‘camera dude’) and a shy but really clever girl who kept us all on track. We spent all day filming a mini film. We explored the college campus and ran around to fit all of our filming into a tight schedule, but we managed. It felt like only an hour before we were in a room full of Apple computers (wow is not the word) and were using high tech editing software to turn our clips into a film. With the help of a media teacher from the college we made a really amazing mini film with awesome effects and were really proud of the outcome. We all finished and were sent to a cinema (yes, it was in the college.) and we, with our families and teachers, (Mrs Brett even came!) watched the resulting products. Boy were we proud.

A Universal Success! On a cold December morning, 90 students from years 7-9 were transported to the hot exotic continent of India with a visit from our Hinduism experts Sakhya and Kavita. We were introduced to the world of Gods and Goddess, storytelling and dance.

Students dressed up and re-enacted the story of the Ramayana from the Bhagavad Gita. The colours and materials were beautiful.

Students were given a lesson in meditation; Miss Kiggins was speechless at the calm and relaxed atmosphere that took over the sports hall.

At the end of the day students took part in some Bhangra style dancing and learnt some Bollywood moves to show off to their friends and family.

On Wednesday March 27, 40 Year 9 students visited South Cheshire College for an A-Level taster day.

The college made us feel very welcome and students were able to try their hand at Archaeology, Psychology, Law, Critical Thinking, RE and Geography.

In Law we learnt about the different types of criminal convictions and also why lawyers make everything sound so complicated.

The Psychology lesson asked us to pick out serial killers from famous psychologists and taught us how to recognise a genuine smile.

Our students were able to get down to the nitty gritty questions and ask some students what college life is really like.

We hope that this experience has made our Year 9’s feel more at ease with college and it will hopefully help them to choose their GCSE options.

The Christmas Celebration Buffet for senior guests was held just before the Christmas break. The whole event was organised and catered for by the Year 10 GCSE Hospitality students as part of their coursework and this was the largest event they had organised.

The students organised everything. The GCSE Product Design students designed and made the beautiful cake stands and also the pop out Christmas cards the guests were given as they arrived. The guests were met and offered warm mulled wine, then seated whilst the buffet was served. Mr Abbot’s music students provided excellent entertainment in the form of traditional and modern Christmas carols throughout the meal.

The guests were very impressed with both the meal and the standard of service, with Mrs Veich commenting: ‘Congratulations to students and staff. Everything was excellent, including table decorations’ and Mr Heath commending the ‘First class entertainment’.

All of the students worked extremely hard and behaved impeccably throughout the event; their attention to detail was extremely impressive, given that this was their first major event. All the staff involved were very proud of them.

Bloodhound SSC, the UK’s attempt at breaking the world land speed record, is scheduled to challenge the current record holders in South Africa in 2014 and is encouraging Year 9 and 10 students talented in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) to become involved in the engineering initiative. The teams’ brief is to create a vehicle which runs on 4 wheels that will move unaided for 15 metres. The vehicle should move without the use of fuel and teams are expected to calculate its thrust through a series of tests. The winning vehicle and team will be decided at South Cheshire College in June, where the students will race their vehicles against teams from other schools. Good luck to all the students involved.

Gainsborough Students Shine at RuskinOver the course of six sessions, sixty Year 4 students from Gainsborough Primary School have attended Ruskin Community High School to design and make their own working torches. To date, all students have left the Design and Technology department with a working torch, having installed the circuits themselves. Students also built the casing for the circuits and personalised each and every one. The Year 4 students came to the department with a prior understanding of circuits and Ruskin staff members were very impressed as they used the correct terminology and knew the symbols for the circuit components.

The process has given students an insight into the Design and

Technology department, a new experience for all involved. They have undergone the process of designing and making like any secondary school student, which should help to make the transition from Primary to Secondary that much easier.

Well done to all the Year 4 students involved.

Anna: “I have really enjoyed making my torch. It was fun. Ruskin is cool.”

Megan: “I have really enjoyed making the torch and next time I would like to make a rubix cube.”

Maklan: “ I have really enjoyed Ruskin. Next time I would like to do some 3D shapes. My torch is good and Ruskin is amazing.”

Leighton Primary SchoolOn Thursday 14th March, the Year 6 pupils at Leighton Primary School enjoyed a fantastic day filled with art, drama, singing and dance focused around the theme of the earth and the elements. Leighton School choir have been preparing a lovely song entitled The Earth, so, with the help of a number of teachers from Ruskin High School, the pupils applied lots of creativity, imagination and huge effort to create a wonderful performance that was thoroughly enjoyed by the whole school.

Year 5 Activities Afternoon‘Ruskintastic’ was one child’s enthusiastic response to the Year 5 activities afternoon on Tuesday 5th March 2013. Almost one hundred pupils attended the event-filled afternoon, taking part in activities such as: CSI Science, Snap Shot Poetry, Creative Cakes, Bloodhound and Learn to Fence. Children and parents alike have spoken about the enjoyable time that they experienced, reflecting positively on meeting the staff at Ruskin, working with the support from Ruskin students and making new friends from other primary schools.

Gainsborough Primary & Nursery SchoolYear 5 Gymnastics

Throughout the spring term, Mr Foster from Ruskin High School has been working with the Year 5 pupils developing their confidence, techniques and ability in Gymnastics. The key themes focused on travel, balance, shape and rolls. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and vastly improved their individual ability thanks to the support of Mr Foster’s expertise. At the end of the Gymnastics unit the Year 5 pupils successfully performed their partner and group sequences to their peers and teachers, taking pride in producing their final performance.

‘I enjoyed all of it because it was such fun’. (Carley Sue Hamlett)

‘I enjoyed helping George do a headstand and finally being able to do a headstand on my own’. (Jake)

Edleston Primary School Literacy Focus

Each Thursday, I have had the pleasure of working alongside the talented pupils in Mrs Hinton’s Year 6 class. It has been a great way of getting to know the pupils and watching them develop their literacy skills throughout the academic year. I am really looking forward to welcoming the pupils in Year 6 who will be joining Ruskin in September. During the spring term myself and Mrs Curry will be working with pupils in Year 5, which will include the reintroduction of the highly successful ‘Playground Leaders’ programme.

Thank you Edleston Primary

Mr Foster

Pebble Brook Primary at RuskinDuring the week of the 18th - 22nd March, students from Pebble Brook Primary School visited the Science Department. The Year 3 class came and did some work on their theme of ‘materials’. They completed the exercise ‘What am I?’ using the sense of touch to describe what was inside the box to the rest of the class. Fun was had when the students had to describe feeling jelly!

Students then completed a structure challenge in which they used a piece of A4 to hold up an exercise book, encouraging them to think about how we can change the strength of materials.

The final activity allowed them to help solve the problem of keeping Miss Ocego’s cup of coffee hot. The students used data loggers to track the progress of the temperature of the coffee. They tried to keep it warm with different materials insulating a cup. They inputted their results onto a class graph on the interactive whiteboard.

Pupils had a really good time and so did the staff!
