FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REGISTRATION

WHY DO I NEED TO REGISTER? Registering gives you the best chance for taking electives and popular classes that may fill quickly.

WHO CAN REGISTER A STUDENT? Only a student or his/her parent or legal guardian. Schools do not accept notes or phone calls to register. These enrollment procedures are requirements of the federal “No Child Left Behind” statute.

WHERE WILL THIS TAKE PLACE - PARKING - HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE? Registration takes place in the DHS Auditeria. Please park in the student parking lot off Arlene Street. The entire process gener-ally takes 45 minutes depending on how long the lines are. We close for lunch from 11 - Noon. So arrive before 10:30 for the morning session.

WHAT IF A FINE IS OWED? All fines incurred in middle school or high school must be cleared before a schedule can be activated. Students who have outstanding fines may not be allowed to pick up their schedule.

WHAT ABOUT IMMUNIZATIONS? State of Alaska regulations require all students to be current on their immunizations to register. All students need to be cleared by our nurse, Ms. Whited, before registering. Nurse Whited will be available to personally answer questions.

WILL WE NEED TO PAY FOR ANYTHING? Some classes require fees for consumable workbooks or other items. The following items are optional for purchase: Yearbook (order now for $65.00), Parking permit ($110 per year), Activity pass ($25), School photos (information included in this newsletter), School logo wear ($12 and up). Pay by cash or check.

WHAT IF WE CAN’T COME AT THE ASSIGNED TIME? Schedules can be picked up on Friday, August 10th, 8:00 - 11:00 am or noon - 2:00 pm.

HOW WILL LOCKERS BE ASSIGNED? Lockers will be assigned at random. Most Freshmen will be paired with the locker partner they selected in the spring.

I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS, WHO DO I SEE? Dimond administrators and security will be available to answer questions during registration or call the switchboard at 742-7000, or visit our website at http://www.asdk12.org./schools/dimond/pages.

Anchorage School District Student Internet User Agreement

5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd. Anchorage, AK 99504-3135 (907) 742-4607

Dear Parent or Guardian, We are pleased to offer students in the Anchorage School District access to the District computer network for internet access. To obtain Internet access, all students must obtain parental permission and must sign and return this form to the school office. Access to the Internet will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, and bulletin boards while exchanging messages with Internet users throughout the world. Families should be aware that some material accessible via the Internet may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive. While our intent is to make Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials as well. We believe that the benefits to students from access to the Internet, in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration, exceed any disadvantages. But ultimately, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their children should follow when using media and information sources. District Internet and E-mail Rights and Responsibilities Students are expected to act in a considerate and responsible manner when accessing network services. Students are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks just as they are in a classroom or a school hallway. Communications on the network are often public in nature. General school rules for behavior and communications apply. The network is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others. Parent permission is required and students who do not have such permission are responsible for not accessing the Internet at school. Access is a privilege, not a right, and entails responsibility. Individual users of the District computer networks are responsible for their behavior and communications over those networks. It is expected that users will comply with District standards and will honor the agreements they have signed. Network storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files stored on District servers will always be private. Within reason, freedom of speech and access to information will be honored. During school, teachers of younger students will guide students toward appropriate materials. The following are not permitted:

Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures

Using obscene language Harassing, insulting, or attacking others Violating copyright laws

Employing the network for commercial purposes Deliberate damage to hardware or software Use of District computers for illegal activities

Violation may result in a loss of access as well as other disciplinary or legal action. For more information, see the School Board Policies and the ASD Student Rights and Responsibilities document.

NOTE FROM THE NURSE: NO SHOTS, NO SCHOOL!

Hello Dimond Families!

These last few weeks of summer are a good time to verify your student’s shot record to see if he or she will be due for any im-munizations before Fall Registration. Please get your immunizations updated to avoid exclusion from the Registration process. ASD has a strict, “No Shots, No School” policy. Students with out-of-date immunizations will not be able to register for classes at Registration. Check your child’s shot history and if there are any immunizations needed, or any that do not appear on your student’s school immunization record, please submit those records via fax to the nurse office at # 742-7171, attn: Nurse. You can also scan immunization records and email those to me in an attachment to [email protected]. If you have any ques-tions, please don’t hesitate to call me. The number is # 742-7054. I will be back in the building all day on Friday, August 3rd and during registration the following week. Any shot records received over the summer will be entered before Fall Registration. If you would like confirmation that your student’s records were received, please indicate you would like confirmation and include a number/ email address I can use to contact you. Thank you so much and enjoy these last weeks that are quickly passing us by!

If you think you have a concussion: Don’t hide it! Report it! Take time to recover!

CONCUSSION IN SPORTS A FACT SHEET FOR ANCHORAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT ATHLETES AND PARENTS1

1 This information comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Heads Up, Concussion in High School Sports.” See

www.cdc.gov/Concussion.

What is a concussion? A concussion is a brain injury that:

Is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body. Is always serious and can change the way your brain normally works. Can occur during practices or games in any sport or recreational activity. Can happen even if you haven’t been knocked out. Can be serious even if you’ve just been “dinged” or “had your bell rung.”

What are the signs and symptoms? Signs Observed

by Parents or Guardians Symptoms Reported by

Athlete Appears dazed or stunned Is confused about assignment or position Forgets an instruction Is unsure of game, score, or opponents Moves clumsily Loses consciousness (even briefly) Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes Can’t recall events prior to hit or fall Can’t recall events after hit or fall

Headache or “pressure” in head Nausea or vomiting Balance problems or dizziness Double or blurry vision Sensitivity to light or noise Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy Concentration or memory problems Confusion Just not “feeling right” or “feeling down”

What to do if you suspect a concussion: Tell the coach and school nurse. They need to know if you suspect a concussion. They also need to know if there has been a previous concussion. Seek medical attention. A health care professional experienced in evaluating concussions will be able to diagnose and treat a concussion and determine when it is safe to return to play. You cannot return to an Anchorage School District activity until a qualified medical provider indicates it is safe to do so. Stay out of play and recover. A brain with a concussion needs time to heal. While a brain is still healing, there is a much greater chance of another concussion. Repeat concussions can slow recovery and increase the likelihood of long-term problems. In rare cases, repeat concussions can result in edema (brain swelling), permanent brain damage, and even death. Tell your principal and teachers. A concussion can impact a student’s ability to do school work and other activities, such as computer use, studying, driving, or exercising. If needed, your teachers and school nurse can help adjust school activities during the recovery period.

Preventing Concussion: While each sport is different, there are steps every athlete can take.

Use the proper sports equipment. Wear the right equipment for the game or position, make sure it fits and wear it correctly. Follow the coach’s rules for safety and the rules of the sport. Practice good sportsmanship at all times.

BASELINE TESTING – AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP: As part of ASD’s efforts to minimize concussion related injuries, every school athlete is required to participate in ImPACT baseline screening. ImPACT is a computerized exam utilized in sports programs across the country to diagnose and manage concussions. This is a non-invasive, simple test set up in “video-game” format and takes 20 minutes to complete on an ASD computer or at home using the following link http://www.asdk12.org/activities/concussion_info/Baseline%20Testing%20Instructions.pdf. The test records individual reaction time, memory, speed, and concentration. It is not an IQ test and is not utilized for any purpose other than to establish a baseline measure for comparison should a student later be suspected of having a concussion. The test data will enable health professionals to determine when return-to-play is appropriate and safe for the injured athlete. You may obtain further information online at http://impacttest.com, or from your coach or school nurse.

The ImPACT baseline test is required of all students participating in any ASD activity that requires a sports physical. A single test is required for middle school athletes and again for high school athletes. The test will be administered prior to the first sports activity in which a student participates. The cost of the baseline assessment is $5 and will be the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian.

The Anchorage School District requires that each athlete, and each athlete’s parent/guardian, receive a copy of its fact sheet entitled “CONCUSSION IN SPORTS, A FACT SHEET FOR ANCHORAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT ATHLETES AND PARENTS.” This fact sheet sets forth a description of the nature and risks of concussion.

Parents and athletes should review the Fact Sheet, discuss it at home, and direct any questions to the coach, school nurse, or activities principal. In addition, parents and athletes are encouraged to review the Anchorage School District Guidelines for Concussion Prevention, Identification, Treatment and Management. These Guidelines are available at the ASD website, www.asdk12.org, from your coach, and at your school office.

Parents and athletes need to annually acknowledge receipt of “CONCUSSION IN SPORTS, A FACT SHEET FOR ANCHORAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT ATHLETES AND PARENTS.”
