Dear Dimond Parent or Guardian,

Spring is upon us with wonderfully longer days and outdoor sports. Welcome track, soccer, softball and baseball!

Welcome, also, high stakes state testing and sec-ond semester finals. In this newsletter you’ll

read about the importance of regular at-tendance, staying up with homework, and academic dates to mark on your calendar.

Most importantly, students need to earn credit for their semester classes so they stay on track to graduate. High school students will not have the face-to-face sum-mer school classes this summer that they have been accustomed to using to catch up credits. As part of the budget cuts, summer school classes will only be offered online. Students can avoid making up classes on-

line by buckling down now and passing their classes.

As you see in the dates listed to the right of this article, March and April contain many events you won’t want to miss. We honor academic and athletic leaders of the class of 2013, put on Dimond Night Live and end the month with Prom 2013.

As the daylight keeps increasing, it re-minds me how busy the last three months of school will be. It’s a good time to relax and have a week off to rest and prepare for what will be a very busy last quarter of the school year. Spring sports will begin, vari-ous academic events, many senior activities, prom, concerts, finals and most important is graduation for our seniors. It really is a time for everyone to stay focused and be as successful as possible at any level. With budget cuts, we wont have summer school like we are used to having at Dimond. It’s very important that students continue to at-tend classes, do their assignments and par-ticipate every day until the end of the year. Don’t let yourself be ineligible to partici-pate in sports for the following school year. I strongly encourage everyone to do his or her best each day as we move towards sum-mer.

Testing, Testing, Testing! April is the Month of testing for high school students in Alaska, and Dimond is no exception. March 28th is SBA Science test for all 10th graders. All others students will have regular classes for this date. On April 2nd SBA Reading for all 9th graders and HS-GQE Reading test for all 10th plus re-takes for 11th and 12th graders who have not passed this part of the exam. On April

3rd SBA Writing for all 9th graders and HSGQE Writing test for all 10th plus re-takes for 11th and 12th graders who have not passed this part of the exam On April 4th SBA Math for all 9th graders and HS-GQE Math test for all 10th plus retakes for 11th and 12th graders who have not passed this part of the exam. For students who do not have to test on April 2-4, there will be a special bus pick-up that will run 3 and a half hours later than their normal pick-up time.

On test days, regularly scheduled classes will start at 12:16 P.M. for all students. April 2nd we will have Periods 1 & 2, April 3rd we will have Periods 3 & 4 and April 4th we will have Periods 5 & 6. KCC students will be expected to attend KCC classes throughout testing. They will have both AM and PM classes each day of testing. The only day you may be excused is if you are taking an exam that day. It is extremely important that your student at-tend the test and the classes. We ask that you do not plan any appointments on these days, as we are not allowed to disrupt the testing environment until the state allows us to dismiss students.

Final Exams and Senior ExamsSeniors, mark your calendars! Dimond’s

graduation will take place at the Sullivan Arena on Tuesday, May 14th at 2:00pm. Spring semester always seems to fly by. Se-niors take their finals on Thursday, May 9th and Friday, May 10th. These are critically important days for our seniors. Dimond se-niors will have no extra school days between their last day of finals (Friday) through the day of graduation (Tuesday). This schedule is great news for impatient seniors ready to graduate, and a potential pitfall for the chronic procrastinators. Seniors, if you want to guarantee you’re eligible to walk at graduation, please make sure that you’re present and prepared for final exams, that you submit all class work on time, and that you complete any outstanding correspon-dence or online courses at least a full week in advance. Don’t miss this wonderful op-portunity to celebrate thirteen years of ed-ucation with your friends, family, and our community!

For those students who will be returning next year, spring is a great time to look at your credit completion thus far. Students need 22.5 credits to graduate. Each year a student can earn six of those credits by pass-ing all of their classes both semesters. Any 9th through 11th grade students who have earned fewer than 5.5 credits in a given school year is considered behind in credits. If your student is in this situation, please talk with his or her counselors about vari-ous methods of credit recovery. With regu-lar summer school being cut in this year’s school budget, students should not rely on this service this year. Our goal is to keep students on track to graduate and to quickly catch up any student who falls behind

Semester FinalsPlease encourage your student to finish the semester by staying on top of assign-ments right up to the end and by taking finals seriously. Finals for juniors, sopho-mores and freshmen take place the last two days of the semester: May 22nd and 23rd. Please plan your summer travels around these important dates and remember that, per district policy, finals cannot be taken early.

HSGQE Testing 101……

Q: Who will take the HSGQE test this spring?A: All sophomores take the exam as well as any junior or senior who has not passed one or more sections of the HSGQE.

Q: What exams will the freshmen take?A: Freshmen take the Standards Based Assessment (SBAs) on April 2nd-4th. The SBAs measure whether a student is performing at grade level in reading, writing and math. This test is used to determine classes for the next year.

Q: What exams will sophomores take?A: Sophomores will take the High School Graduation Qualifying Exam (HSGQE) on April 2nd-4th. The HSGQE is a graduation re-quirement in the state of Alaska. Students must pass the reading, writing and math sections of the HSGQE. Sophomores also take a Standards Based Assessment for Science on March 28th, however, passing the science exam is not a requirement for graduation.

Q: What exams do juniors and seniors take?A: Only students who need to pass one or more sections of the HSGQE need to test and they are only required to take the portion of the exam they have yet to pass. The HSGQE Reading exam is April 2nd, Writing is April 3rd and Math is April 4th. Most juniors and seniors will not test this spring.

Q: What do juniors and seniors do on testing days if they have passed all three HSGQE exams?A: Juniors and seniors who do not need to test have a late start April 2nd– 4th and do not need to come to school until 12:10 P.M. A late bus will run for juniors and seniors on testing days 3 ½ hours later than their regular times.

Q: How long are the SBA and HSGQE exams?A: Both HSGQE and the SBA are untimed. Most students finish the exams by 11:20 A. M. and are released for lunch. Students who continue testing are moved to an alternate location and provided a lunch.

Q: When will I get my student’s exam results?A: Student results are mailed home near the end of the school year. The school will receive electronic results for seniors in late April.

STUDENT SERVICES/ATTENDANCE NEWSHolly Morris, Student Services/Attendance Assistant Principal - 742-7056

Our mission is to facilitate optimal learning for all students to empower them to lead fulfilling and productive lives in a rapidly changing and increasingly complex society.

This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

We have all heard “there is no time like the present.” This adage means a lot to students this time of the year; third quarter has ended and there is only one quarter re-maining for the end of the school year.

Seniors are looking forward to gradua-tion. We encourage them to stay on target and on task. Activities like Senior Fun Day and Graduation are just around the corner.

Juniors are planning their senior year. With graduation only a year away, courses are being counted, classes being scheduled and post-graduation plans are budding.

Sophomores are looking at opportuni-ties available through King Career Center studies as well as continued studies in areas in order to refine skills and further explore interests.

Freshmen are finishing their first year in high school and planning the next step in their high school careers.

All students must maintain their efforts. Timely arrival and class attendance are key to finishing strong this semester.

FRESHMAN HOUSE NEWSDavid Legg, Freshman House Assistant Principal - 742-7069

Spring is just around the corner and the remainder of the year is fast-paced and packed full of activities. It is hard to be-lieve that Spring Break is behind us, mean-ing that we are three-quarters of the way through the year. By now, your freshmen should have had the opportunity to select their classes for next school year. As the end of the year approaches, it is important to remind your students to stay focused as they anticipate the upcoming summer break. Your students can certainly finish the year strong with your support, supervision, and active involvement in their education.

Please keep looking at Zangle to check on your students’ progress. As we enter the final quarter, monitoring your students’ progress on a regular basis will assist in keeping them on track with credits earned. If you have concerns with your students’ progress, please feel free to contact their teachers or to call me directly so we can formulate a plan for their success. I believe the more we communicate, the more our students prosper. Thanks for all you do!

We recently held our annual Future Freshman Fair with an estimated 450+ students and parents in attendance. During the fair, prospective students were able to visit the many informational booths staffed by Dimond’s student leaders, athletes and teachers. The booths focused on Dimond’s many clubs and sports opportunities. And the fair provided students and parents a chance to meet with counselors and de-partment chairs for a brief overview of academic programs. Counselors assisted in facilitating the fair and fielding questions throughout the presentations. We are look-ing forward to getting to know next year’s freshman as we continue our transition ac-tivities for the remainder of the year.

Testing: The SBA Reading Writing and Math exams will be April 2, 3, and 4. The makeup session for these sections of the SBA will be on April 5th. Please make sure your students are well rested and well fed for the exams. Test results are one piece of information used to determine course se-lections.

The freshman house integrates several op-portunities for students to integrate their learning into academic competitions. This month, we would like to highlight this year’s winners in the Battle of the Books. This contest in integrated into all Fresh-man English classes. Students are required to read 6 of the Battle Books and organize a team for the school competition. Each student on the winning team will receive a free yearbook this Spring.

ACTIVITIES NEWSTim Helvey, Activities Assistant Principal - 742-6996

Another great season for our winter ac-tivities.The end of the winter sports season has given Dimond two more banners to hang in the gym. Our boys and girls bowling team won state honors and our boys’ hockey team won their second straight state cham-pionship. The girls’ hockey team had a great season finishing runner-up. The girls cheer squads finished with high marks in the Region IV competition. Cheer comp finished first, basketball cheer finished first, and hockey cheer finished second. The cross-country ski team had a great season with some promising young ath-letes getting great experience for the future years. This letter will be out before our boys ‘and girls’ basketball teams com-pete at regions or state. Our teams are once again representing our school with pride. The boys’ team is currently in a tight race bouncing back and forth from second and third place. This is an impressive task since many members of our state championship team from last year are gone and Coach Galosich is working with a younger group of athletes. The girls’ basketball team is currently first in conference play and still dominates in their conference. The last conference loss coach Young endured was three years ago. This is an impressive stat considering the quality of play within our conference.

I would personally like to thank the coach-es, parents, athletes, and all our seniors for the hard work and dedication they have given to Dimond High School this year.

Boys Hockey Giving Back.On January 30, 2013 Dimond’s boys hock-

ey team presented a check for $2150.00 to the Armed Services YMCA. The hockey team raised the money through gate sales and jersey auctions after their game. The event is in appreciation of our service men and women and all they do for our coun-try.

Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) Concussion Management Poli-cyThis is a guide to help parents understand the steps taken for concussed athletes. In 2011, the Alaska State Legislature passed House Bill 15 and Senate Bill 22, requir-ing school districts to consult with Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) to develop and publish guidelines and other information to educate coaches, student athletes, and parents of student athletes regarding the nature and risks of concus-sions. Guidelines must include a descrip-tion of the risks of return to play and stan-dards for return to play, including proce-dures required under sections (c) and (d) of Section 14.30.142, Concussions in Student Athletes: Prevention and Reporting.

Return to Play Protocol - Only when the concussion symptoms have been entirely absent for 24 hours, and the healthcare professional has cleared the athlete to be-gin the Return to Play Protocol, does Day 1 of the progressive return to physical ac-tivity begin. The Return To Play Protocol is to take place over a minimum of six days, with at least 24 hours between each step. The rate of progression through the steps in the program should be individu-alized. Factors which may slow the rate are young age, history of previous concus-sions, number/severity/duration of concus-

sion symptoms, medical risk factors, and the concussion risk of the sports to which the athlete will return. Physical or cogni-tive activity that provokes recurrence of concussive symptoms will delay recovery and increase the risk of future concussion. Therefore, if symptoms recur at any step, then physical activity should stop for 24 hours and resume at the previous step.

Gradual Return to PlayDay 1:* Begin when symptom free for 24 hours.* 15 min light aerobic activity (walk, swim, stationary bike, no resistance train-ing).* If no symptoms, then:

Day 2:*30 min light-mod aerobic activity (jog, more intense walk, swim, stationary bike, no resistance training).* If no symptoms, then:

Day 3:*30 min mod-heavy aerobic activity (run, swim, cycle, skate, Nordic ski, no resis-tance training).*If no symptoms, then:

Day 4:* 30 min heavy aerobic (hard run, swim, cycle, skate, Nordic ski) * 15 min Resistance Training (push-up, sit-up, weightlifting) *If no symptoms, then:

Day 5: *Return to Practice, Non-contact Lim-ited Participation (Routine sport-specific drills).*If no symptoms then:

Day 6: *Return to Full-Contact Practice *If no symptoms, then:

Day 7:*Medically Eligible for Competition when completes RTP Protocol and is cleared by Healthcare Professional*ASAA Eligibility Criteria must be met before return to competition.

Happy Spring - ish. Last year on March 1, 2012, Anchorage was just 13” from the breaking the snowfall record. That was then, this article is about, now.

This month, the PTSA served the spring teacher luncheon for teacher conferences on February 14. A huge thank-you goes out to Judith Mack and Janet Cordell who led the army of volunteers in serving our faculty and staff. Thank you especially to

Bonnie Grahm, Jay Tung, Cherie Remmer for batting clean-up, students from Engi-neering and JROTC who helped do the heavy lifting to prepare for the luncheon. Thanks to you, Keegan, Donovan, Allie and Tian for setting up.

Thanks to countless people who brought salads and desserts. They were all very much appreciated. If you find you are miss-ing a plate, bowl, or spoon...perhaps they are still at school. Please do come by and take a look or ask at the front desk.

It is a big undertaking to feed over 100 hungry adults who are stretched for time. Thank you too, to Ginger was called on to help find tools and supply.

Our next serving opportunity is the SBA Testing Breakfasts we provide every year. SBA’s are April 2, 3, and 4. There will be emails regarding shopping, setting up, serv-ing, and take down for the three days of testing. This is valuable - as research has shown students test better if they are fed.

Teacher Appreciation Day is another big thing on the calendar coming to which PTSA contributes time, energy, and food. Please consider helping. Look for emails from the PTSA for more opportunities.

As the school year nears the end, research papers and projects will be due. Please

German II student, Kendal Williams, ranked or placed 14th out of 186 stu-dents in the National German Exam Results. She received the silver medal award for this. Great job Kendal!

utilize the library websites available to any Dimond students.

And finally, our PTSA meeting for March will be Monday, March 4 at 4:00 p.m. in Dimond’s large conference room. Our fo-cus will be the Spring Grants for teachers and staff. It is one week earlier than usual because of Spring Break which is March 11 - 15.

Everyone is welcome to attend. And then, you can see the potential for how invigorat-ing and fun it is to be in a leadership posi-tion on the PTSA Board.

Thank-you for your support.

commanders meeting was held to inform all of the drill team com-manders on how the drill teams would enter the floor. All of the ca-dets were able to practice be-fore perform-ing and all

the schools were considerate and did not take over the practice floor allowing all the schools to practice enough. The Varsity Color Guard was the first to perform. Afterwords the LET 1 Color Guard performed. Both teams received 1st place trophies. The Unarmed Regulation team performed next.

Then the LET 1 Regulation Team performed and won a 1dt place trophy. Next, the Armed Regula-tion team went on the floor. The Unarmed Ex-hibition Team performed next and earned a 1st

place trophy. The last team to perform was the Armed Exhibition team and earned a 2nd place trophy. All the cadets had a good time at the drill meet.

3rd Awards Ceremony The 3rd Awards Ceremony was held on January 28th in the Auditorium. To start the awards, all cadets received the LET service ribbon, a ribbon for completing a semester in JROTC.

All of the LET 1's received the CPR rib-bon, a ribbon for successfully learning proper CPR. For the months of November and January, Alpha Company won Honor Company. In December Bravo Company won Honor Company, their first time win-ning it this year. For November and Janu-ary, Alpha 2 won Platoon of the month. In December, Bravo 3 won Platoon of the month. For the 2nd quarter NCO board, cadet Michael Anders won.

Every cadet left happy because they all re-ceived an award that night.

Colony Drill Meet The Colony drill meet was held at Colony High School on February 2nd. The LET 1 Color Guard was on first for Dimond and received a 1st place trophy. The Varsity Color Guard went next and also received 1st place. The Unarmed Regulation team was the first Dimond drill team to perform, they placed 2nd. Unarmed Regulation has not placed in the trophies since before MSG Shelley first started teaching at Di-mond. The LET 1 Regulation team per-formed afterwords. The Armed Regulation team was last to perform for regulation. They placed 1st. The Unarmed Exhibition and Armed Exhibition categories were last to go. The Unarmed Exhibition team placed 1st again, a repeat of what they did at Eagle River.

The Armed Exhibition team placed 1st also. The Armed Exhibition team qualified through the two drill meets to compete at Nationals that will be held in Louisville, Kentucky on April 6th.

ENGINEERING ACADEMY NEWSLea Bouton, Marcus Reese, Wade Roach, Zion Russell & Chaz Vaughn

For the second year, the Principles of En-gineering (POE) class will compete in the Anchorage CANstruction competition. ! If you’re unfamiliar with the event, CAN-struction is a design competition that show-cases the skills of local engineers and ar-chitects as they build very large structures entirely out of canned food. Afterward, all the cans are donated to Food Bank of Alaska (FBA) to support their mission of eliminating hunger in Alaska.

Carrs Safeway supplies all of the canned goods to CANstruction teams at their cost. However, even with this generous sponsor-ship, most structures cost between $3,000 and $5,000. We need your help! Our goal

CANstructionthis year is to raise $2,000. That money, combined with a generous matching con-tribution from our sponsor Enterprise En-gineering, Inc., will buy approximately 4000 cans of food that we will use to build our structure, and then donate to FBA. Please consider a generous contribution to our team. Each dollar is an investment in our engineering program, and in our com-munity. Checks should be made out to Food Bank of Alaska and include our team name “Dimond Engineering Academy” in the memo section. Checks should be mailed to: Food Bank of Alaska, Re: CAN-struction, 2121 Spar Ave., Anchorage, AK 99501. FBA will mail you a receipt of ac-knowledgement for your records.

The theme this year is “Wonders of the World” and we are excited to build our de-sign featuring a celestial wonder – the north-ern lights. Please come see our cre-ation at the Un ive r s i ty Center be-tween March 22nd and April 4th, 2013. Bring a can of food to vote for your favorite structure!

On Friday, February 8, 45 sophomore and freshman girls participated in the 3rd annual Smart Girls Rock! Engineering event. The purpose of this afternoon is to educate young women, who were recommended by their science teachers, about the variety of engineering fields and job opportunities available.

The Society of Women Engineers, 3M, Wells Fargo, Moose’s Tooth Pizza, R&M Consultants and Warning Lites of Alaska sponsored this year’s event.

Fifteen women engineers from around Anchorage (including three DHS alumni) participated in the speed-mentoring portion of the afternoon. Girls spoke to the women engineers in pairs to find out more about their jobs, lives, education and engineering in general – all in a quick four minutes! Attendees rotated through multiple stations that included female engineers, the Dimond Career Resource Counselor, and engineering teachers at Dimond. In their follow-up comments, many girls expressed that they liked getting to learn more about engineering fields that they hadn’t known about, and that they especially appreciated getting to interact with the volunteers. For a special afternoon, the MPR rocked with positive energy and excitement about engineering.

Third Annual Smart Girls Rock! Was a Big Success

Attention Senior Parents

Senior Fun Day is on Friday May 3rd!

This day was created at Dimond High 24 years ago to replace senior’s unofficial "skip" day, and the tradition has since spread to all the other Anchorage high schools. On that Friday, students will be bussed from DHS to the ATT Center to enjoy a fun and stress-free day of prizes, games, food, and music. It has been a great success over the years in terms of student safety, community involvement, and provides a final get together between students, staff, administrators, and parents before graduation. Senior Fun Day needs volunteers, donations of cash, prizes, and food to be a success. SFD is funded almost exclusively through donations; last year over $5500 was spent on the Center rental, food, T-shirts, prizes, and entertainment. We would love to have your help putting together this important event; please contact Bonnie Ulrich-Pierce for more information ([email protected] ). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A permission slip is required, so please read the following information and sign on the other side of this paper. I agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the Anchorage School District and its employees, directors and designees for expenses relating to injuries, accidents, disease, property damage and/or loss which may occur as a result of the student’s participation in Dimond’s Senior Fun Day. I understand the Anchorage School District does not provide medical insurance coverage or liability insurance that would cover a student’s injuries or actions. It will be my responsibility to provide for payment of such expenses should they occur. I am aware of the hazards associated with participation in this activity. Knowing the risks of this activity, I give my permission for the above listed student to participate in the activity to include transportation as arranged by the event coordinators. I also authorize any necessary emergency transportation and medical treatment to be administered to the above named student. I understand the Anchorage School District assumes no liability for such emergency transportation and medical treatment and that such costs will be my responsibility. Allergies and/or special medical instructions for the student are listed below: _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

27 schools in the Anchorage School District are slated for improvement

A $54.8 million bond package with 60 – 70% state reimbursement will be put before voters on April 2, 2013.

at means the average homeowner will pay about $4.85 for every $100,000 of assessed property value per year, with state reimbursement.

Schools on the list include ones determined by the district to have the greatest need.

Two dierent tools now determine the necessity of funds and improvements for all ASD buildings. One tool tracks physical problems like roofs, boilers and windows. e second tool detects issues that make teaching and learning dicult.

Using district measuring standards, Girdwood K-8’s need is three times higher than any other school.

Last year voters approved more than $2 million for school design. On April 2, voters will determine whether to use those plans to improve and expand Girdwood School.

Right now, the district has the lowest amount of debt it has held in a decade. In the last ve years, ASD has paid o $247 million.
