hempel is a leading supplier ofhigh-quality paints to heavy industry.

Drawing on decades of experience from the marine segment, Hempel offers anticorrosive coatings for virtually any type of steel structure. Our coatings deliver proven, long-term effec-tiveness, protecting components in even the most challeng-ing environments, including offshore oil and gas structures and the insides of chemical tanks. Hempel paints can be used in both alkaline and acid environments. In just a few days, we can supply the right product in a standard shade (including RAL, NCS and BS) for your industry and project, even for smaller tasks. Hempel customers are all over the world, so our products meet global specifications and our as-sortment is available wherever you are.

Anticorrosion protectionfor power plantsHempel provided two structural steel coating systems – one for inside and another for external surfaces – for the new Trianel combined-cycle power plant at Hamm-Uentrop in Germany. Siemens Power Generation was the contractor, and the envi-ronmentally friendly 850 MW plant is owned by 27 regional and municipal energy providers from Germany, the Nether-lands and Austria. More than 50.000 litres of Hempel coatings went into the project. The three-coat external system began with the primer; hempel’s gAlVosIl 15702 or hempADur ZInC 17360 followed by the high-solid, high-build epoxy; hempADur mAstIC 45880. The final coat was the semi-gloss acryl-ic polyurethane hempAthAne topCoAt 55210, chosen for its good colour and gloss retention. The main steel construction elements inside the buildings were fully coated in the fabricating shop, but the tanks, pipes, boiler casings and other equipment were initially protected using just the primers mentioned above (hempel’s gAlVosIl 15702 or hempADur ZInC 17360). After assembly, the hard and tough epoxy topcoat hempADur 45143 was applied. This paint was also chosen for its rapid application properties. The same

coating system was used for the shop-painted components. The boiler casings had been subcontracted to the Israeli firm Brand Industries Ltd. Hempel Cyprus provided the zinc silicate primer hempel’s gAlVosIl 15702 for that project.

Nord stream 1 pipeline nearing completionIn late 2011, the longest subsea pipeline in the world began sup-plying natural gas from Western Siberia to households and firms in the European Union. Hempel is pleased to provide internal coa-tings for parts of this Nord Stream pipeline and related pipelines. This so-called “flow coat” (hempel’s hs gAs pIpe CoAtIng 87830) will serve to speed the flow of gas, thus allowing it to be transported more efficiently over the long distance. When Nord Stream 2 is completed in 2012, the project will have an annu-al capacity of 55 billion litres. The pipeline is constructed from 12 metre long pipe lengths that are 1.22 metre in diameter. The pipe’s steel walls range from 27 to 41 mm thick. They are additio-nally coated with concrete 60 to 110 mm thick to give them extra weight and ensure their stability on the seabed. Russia’s United Metallurgical Company is supplying 25% of the pipes (280,000 tonnes) for the first pipeline, while the German company EURO-PIPE, Mülheim an der Ruhr is providing 75% (860,000 tonnes) of the pipes for Nord Stream 1.

the availability of above mentioned products could vary in some countries. For specific information, please ask your local hempel office.

We work with customers in thefollowing business segments:

Oil and gas (on and offshore) Petrochemical plants Port machinery (e.g. cranes) Power Generation including conventional and nuclear Mining & metal processing Wind turbines (on & offshore) Bridges, airports, stadiums Railway carriages and wagons Chemical plants Water and waste water facilities

UASC’ nine newbuilds go direct to drydock for Hempasil X3 treatment. With bunker fuel costs rising to record triple-digit highs and drydo-cking intervals now up to 90 months, ship owners and operators are realising it makes good business sense to invest in the new generation of fouling release systems. Guaranteed fuel savings, lower CO2 emissions, less time in drydock and more time in the water – these are just some of the benefits offered by Hempel’s hempasil X3 system. Quick to see the advantages of this new technology, the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has con-tracted Hempel to coat nine of the company’s new order for large container vessels with hempasil X3 immediately after they leave the Samsung shipyard in Korea, where the ships are being built.

Moving nine newbuilds to drydock may seem like a drastic move, but with the hempasil X3 system, vessels that typically use USD 90,000 of bunker fuel per day for example, can save at least two per cent of fuel per day. Therefore, the payback period on the coating system is much less than five years and thereafter it’s money in the bank for the ship owner or ope-rator. In addition to the hempasil X3 fouling release coating, the multimillion U.S. Dollar contract with UASC also includes the one-coat Nexus X-Seal tie coat solution, the Sea Trend fuel consumption data monitoring software and the Hempasil He-lix propeller coating, therefore totally maximising fuel saving efficiencies and constantly monitoring them.

According to Ian McCahill, Sales and Technical Services Director at Hempel Paints Middle East, the contract with UASC is regarded as a milestone. “UASC had used Hempel anti-fouling solutions be-fore, however this will be first-hand experience with our fouling re-lease products for the company. Based on the positive experience UASC had with other Hempel antifouling solutions applied to their A4 class container fleet, they are looking forward to witnessing the benefits from the third generation hempasil X3 system with Hempel’s unique hydrogel technology they trust will achieve con-siderable fuel consumption savings and more importantly reduce the CO2 emissions from their newbuilding fleet, contributing to a greener environment - all in all a win-win situation for the owner and the planet.

Time constraints and construction priorities at newbuilding yards have made additional application costs for fouling release coa-tings the norm. But by going directly to drydock, owners and operators can avoid contractual premiums attached to the spe-cification and application of fouling release coatings at the new build stage,” says Ian. “Furthermore, with the Nexus X-Seal tie coat, owners and operators can now upgrade tin-free copolymer systems without the need for extensive surface preparation. It makes upgrading to hempasil X3 uniquely economically viable, either at newbuilding, directly after newbuilding or at first docking.

hempel‘s marine paints provide op-timum protection for newbuildings and maintenance, both onboard and in drydock.

Hempel has, since the start of the container trade, been a trend setter in the market, having introduced the 3 coat exterior sys-tem back in the late seventies, the first generation exterior wa-terborne container system in the early nineties and in 2010 the EcoBoxcoat full waterborne container coating system, applica-ble at all modern container manufacturing lines world-wide.

There are roughly 60 larger container factories with the majori-ty located in China today, all producing containers after a very similar production pattern. It is therefore of utmost importance that current solvent borne systems and future waterborne paint systems match this production system, for the factories not to make costly reconstructions in a very cost conscious market. Hempel’s EcoBoxcoat does exactly meet this requirement as well as offering an outstanding performance in service.

Hempel’s R&D division have therefore formulated and tested the various options before we launched our EcoBoxcoat system con-sisting of a zinc rich epoxy shopprimer and online zinc primer, an intermediate epoxy and an acrylic topcoat for exterior, as well as an FDA conforming interior acrylic topcoat. Our dedicated, experienced, technical service team provide the necessary application advice on-line to make sure the paint speci-fication is followed through all aspects of the paint process. Our world-wide network of stock points ensure that all types of con-tainers can be repaired locally with suitable products and correct colours. Please check www.hempel.com for further information or with your local Hempel representative.

Our comprehensive range of products include high-quality emul-sions and enamels that, together with a wide range of various texture paints, offer users a broad palette from which to choose. The product range also includes primers, sealants and fillers, so customers can use a complete Hempel system to best achieve the intended creative outcome. To complement the core assortment of decorative paints, Hempel offers a number of special-effects paints to create distinctive surfaces such as velvet or marble. Our decorative paints are known and preferred by many building owners, architects and contractors. We have a comprehensive range of products for outdoor and indoor use, including paints for floors and steel structures. Our paints are also developed for vari-ous climatic conditions, including low temperatures, high humidity and wet locations, as well as polluted environments.

With, the acquisition of decorative coatings manufacturer Crown Paints a UK based company, Hempel takes a step towards achie-ving its strategic goal: to grow its decorative coatings business. The Decorative segment represents a significant part of the global coatings industry and is expected to keep growing. The-refore, the acquisition of a company strong in the Decorative market is an important part of Hempel’s strategy. Hempel and Crown paints are using their synergies and vast experience to offer environmentally friendly products of high quality to the customers. A good example is our product HEMPATONE ECO-LOGICO 58390, water-borne plastic coating for protection and decoration of interior walls and ceilings that has the Eco-Label. This product respects the environment throughout its entire life cycle (raw materials, production process and finished product). The advantages are the reduction of sub-products that would re-sult in dangerous waste, limited use of harmful substances, both environment and health-wise and the reduction of air pollution. In addition we should emphasise that all our Decorative paints are in compliance with European VOC Directive 2004/42/EC that limit the emissions to the atmosphere of volatile organic compounds.

LOS CUBOS DE LA MEMORIA – Llanes (Asturias, Spain)The Basque artist, Agustín Ibarrola, performed this singular work of art in the Asturias coastal town of Llanes (Spain), which he calls “The Cubes of Memory” and which consisted of painting the con-crete blocks used in the port rockfill. According to the author of the project, “it pulls down the barriers between abstract and figurative art”. Ibarrola’s piece of work focuses on the landscape, culture and lifestyle of the locals and represents a style of art that ranges between Cubism and the most modern historical avant-garde. The areas painted are the inner rockfill and the blocks on the outer stanchion. The project was carried out by using several tonnes of our HEMPATEX HI-BUILD 46410 paint.

hempel is active in providing decorative paints in certain markets of europe, the middle east and China.

We believe that as a coatings company, we need to do everything in our power to protect the environment while ad-hering to sound business practices. We consider complying with local and international legislation to be the bare mini-mum of our operational objectives. We work on developing sustainable coating solutions to reduce the environmental impact of our customers’ businesses, and strive to minimise the environmental footprint of our own operations around the world. We believe that the success, future growth and repu-tation of our company depend on high business standards.

Hempel has been proactive in developing products that will comply with current and future enviromental legislation. For de-cades, we have demonstrated our commitment to health and safety across our entire organisation and product portfolio.

We have taken great steps toward improving our environmental performance:

HSE Competition Sustainable coating solutions Building new factories Making safety transparent

HSE Competition The aim of this competition is to get each factory to report at least one success story involving a safety or environmental improvement at its site. Each story had to document either a reduced risk, improved efficiency and/or cost-saving measu-re. The first ever HSE competition was held in 2010 and every single Hempel factory around the world took part.

Sustainable coating solutionsEnviromental legislation was, is and will always affect the market of industrial coatings. Further more it has started to influence the way end users view sustainability of their pro-ducts. At Hempel, we are not waiting for the legislation to think of the enviroment.

Hempel’s latest offering is its coatings for the rotor blades of wind turbines. Working closely with wind turbine manufactu-rers who are technology leaders in their field, we have deve-loped what probably is today, the best topcoat for blades in the world in terms of rain erosion resistance (RET). These pro-ducts protect the blades from extreme weather conditions,

from sand storms in China to rain storms in the North Sea. hempel’s ultra high solids and speed (uhss) is a system es-pecially designed for the wind segment in order to meet the most strict environmental legislations and at the same time to bring to another level the productivity of the wind tower manufacturers. hempel’s ultra high solids and speed (uhss) was awarded with Klimasol for reducing the VOC emissions with more than 20%.

Waterborne coatings out-perform solvent-borne coatingsHempel’s EcoBoxcoat line of fully waterborne products promi-ses to revolutionise the coating industry – meeting fast line speeds, reducing volatile organic compounds and maintai-ning the anticorrosion benefits of zinc.

Our EcoBoxcoat products can substitute for solvent-borne coatings currently used at modern container factories in China that operate at line speeds as high as three to four minutes – too high for conventional waterborne coatings. EcoBoxcoat’s plug and spray approach meets line speed requirements, is better for the environment and matches or surpasses solvent-borne coatings on anticorrosion protec-tion and aesthetic performance.

Sustainability rewarded by the marine industryAs demand for sustainable products in the marine industry increased throughout 2010, the outlook for Hempel looked healthy. Products such as hempAsIl X3 made a positive impact on the shipping industry’s CO2 emissions and fuel costs in 2010.

International organisations have acknowledged hempAsIl X3’s environmental credentials with a succession of awards, including the Seatrade Award for the Protection of the Marine and Atmos-pheric Environment, the Ingeniřrens Product Award from the Da-nish Society of Engineers, the Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Differentiation Innovation of the Year and the Eurocoat Golden Coat Award for the best technical communication of a product. And, in late 2010, hempAsIl X3 won the Lloyd’s List DCN En-vironmental Transport award for initiatives that benefit the envi-ronment.

New advanced factories in Poland and ChinaThe first batch of coatings rolled off the production lines at our new factory in Buk, Poland, in April 2010. With low emissions and no industrial waste water, the factory’s environmental im-pact is minimal. The factory also features an automatic mate-rials handling system that all but eliminates strenuous manual work for the people who work there. With a capacity of 40 milli-on litres a year, our Buk factory is helping us meet the demand for advanced coatings in Europe.

With its integrated R&D facility and capacity of 55 million litres a year, the new factory in Guangzhou is our largest to date – and is already helping us meet increasing demand for our coa-tings in China. Yet, despite its enormous production capacity, the plant’s carbon footprint is low, and it produces no industrial waste water. The factory has an automatic batching system that reduces dust emissions and minimises the need to handle pow-ders manually, and a recovery system that recycles solvents for future use. The factory also includes an array of solar cells to heat water.

Investment agreement for Hempel’s first paint production facility in Russia The signing of an investment agreement between Hempel and local government officials in the Russian Ulyanovsk region marks an important milestone in the Hempel Group’s plans for its first Russian paint production facility. The plant will help meet growing demand for Hempel coatings in the Russian market.

Quality – without compromiseHempel is committed to providing our customers with top quali-ty products and service. We produce and supply a wide range of high-quality paints and services for the marine, container, pro-tective, yacht and decorative market segments. We are eager to make our expertise available by offering professional advice on the choice and application of suitable paint systems. Our cu-stomers can rely on us and have full confidence in the results.

Commitment to health, safety and the environmentAt Hempel, we take our responsibility for health and safety se-riously. All our production units have dedicated HSE staff who ensure the implementation of our HSE managememt system. The safety of people, processes and products is paramount at Hempel. A global IT system has been implemented to create ful-ly compliant safety data sheets and labels in more than 40 dif-ferent languages. This state-of-the-art system can store and ma-nage detailed safety information on substances, raw materials and products. Once information is in the system, it automatically

It was always intention of our founder, j. C. hempel, to help society and people in need, especially those living in deprived social conditions or when disaster has struck. this belief is one of the cornerstones of our Corporate social responsibility work today.

Hempel FoundationSince 1948, the purpose of the Hempel Foundation has been tosupport cultural, humanitarian, scientific and other objectives forthe common good around the world. We call our humanitarian causes for our Good Corporate Citizen programmes. The aim of these programmes is to provide educational and social support to people in need in local Hempel communities worldwide. The Hempel Foundation has a particular focus on education of child-ren in need and with these international projects we believe we can contribute to make our world a better place.

Education of children in needPoverty is one of the most urgent challenges facing today’s world. The most effective tool to help break the poverty cycle is educa-tion. However, there are 350 million children in the world who onlyreceive a very poor education, and more than 72 million who do not go to school at all. This is why Hempel’s CSR work focuses oneducation of children in need. Through the Hempel Foundation, we are supporting children in Cambodia, India, Mozambique, China, Argentina and South Africa. In this way we are helping some children around the world receive a good education and give them the chance to build a better future for themselves, their community and their future children.

Hempel supports three schools in IndiaHempel supports three schools in India. The schools are part of the same community in one of the less-developed areas of Pune. In developing materials for teaching and learning, improving the physical environment of schools, and helping teachers become fa-miliar with teaching methods that are both innovative and sound.375 children stand to benefit from the school project, which will provide them with a good education.

Two schools in MozambiqueBeing a former Portuguese colony, Mozambique went through 20years of armed struggle with the Portuguese before gaining inde-pendence in 1975. However, when the Portuguese pulled out of Mozambique, which they did in a very short time, Mozambique lost the majority of its skilled professionals including business men, administrators, doctors and engineers – and they were left with virtually no infrastructure. The people of Mozambique has since struggle to get back on their feet but today still 55 percent ofthe population live in deep poverty. In the rural areas only 57 per cent of the children have access to primary school education. As aresult, nearly half of the population will never learn to read or write, and will not be able to contribute to the necessary development in Mozambique. That is why the Hempel Foundation has chosen to support two schools in Mozambique with 1500 children with

all neccesary teaching materials, further education of teachers, school libaries and education in life skills.

A School in CambodiaThe need for educational support in Cambodia is crucial. So in 2006, SOS Children’s Villages took action to construct a primaryschool in Battambang in the north of Cambodia. The Cambodiangovernment donated land for the school, but the ground had to be completely cleared of land mines, drained and leveled. The Hem-pel Foundation co-supported the building of the school, which serves as an educational centre for more than 500 children in need and is today co-funding the daily running of the school.

Five schools in ChinaA new project for the Hempel Foundation is to sponsor five schools in the area of Shanghai. The schools are for underprivi-leged migrant children whose parents come to Shanghai to find work. These children are lacking education and suffer from po-verty, inequality and social exclusion. The five local schools can hold 10.000 migrant children who will get a chance for a good education and a new start in life.

A school in South AfricaEven though South Arica is one of the riches countries in Africa still 50% of the population is living in deep poverty in township and squatter camps. And even though education is a right for all children a lot of the poor children receive no education or an edu-cation of very low quality. The Hempel Foundation has just starteda project being the sole sponsor of a private school in Johannes-burg. A school whose main purpose is to educate the poor child-ren and give them the neccesary self-confidence and motivation to help themselves and their family into a better future.

SOS Children’s Village in BuenosAires, ArgentinaDespite being a member of the G-20 economic forum, Argentinasuffers from high unemployment. According to official statistics, nearly 14 per cent of the population live below the poverty line – and there’s a large difference between rich and poor there. Alt-hough the country has an excellent educational system, there are still many orphaned children who need a home, a family and an education. That is why the Hempel Foundation decided to supportthe SOS Children’s Village in Lujan just outside Buenos Aires. Thesupport is to one of the 14 family houses in the Village which is home to nine children and an SOS Children’s Villages mother.

the hempel Foundation supports re-search that will lead to new, more envi-ronmentally sustainable technologies inthe coating industry.

Our projects in this area include the Hempel Student InnovationLaboratory and the Elite Master Education programme. We belie-ve both initiatives can bring about commercially-viable solutions that not only benefit the coating industry, but will also help red-uce energy use, carbon emissions and waste. New discoveries play an important role in preserving and protecting our world.

The Hempel Student Innovation LabOne of the greatest challenges in the world today is finding solu-tions that protect both the environment and a company’s busi-ness. We believe that one way to overcome this challenge is to give young people the opportunity to develop new ideas in an innovative atmosphere. An international initiative, the Hempel Student Innovation Laboratory at the Chemical Engineering De-partment at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is one such place, and it gives students from all over the world a place to try out their ideas and develop ground-breaking products.

Elite Master EducationThe Hempel Foundation supports the International Elite Master Education programme at the Technical University of Denmar (DTU). The programme gives students from all parts of the worlda chance to build links with companies that take a global ap-proach to research, innovation and design. We want to help en-hance knowledge about protective coatings at a high academic level. Each year, we support international students whose work is connected to the industry. In 2010, students from Barcelona in Spain began their studies and they were soon accompanied by astudent from China. The Hempel Foundation will continue to fundthem until they complete their studies.

Other DonationsJ.C. Hempel, was an avid collector of antique glass and, over the ye-ars, he built up one of the finest collections in Europe. His collectionis housed at the hempel glass museum located just outsid Copen-hagen. Created in 1965 by J. C. Hempel himself and supported by the hempel Cultural Foundation, the Museum includes many fine examples of 18th and 19th century china and earthenware. Since 1988, the hempel Cultural Foundation has given an annu-al Hempel Glass Prize to a prominent, young artist who works in glass and the prize includes a scholarship for studying abroad. In Denmark the hempel Foundation is also operating partner for the mary Foundation, a charity foundation established by hrh Crown princess mary of Denmark.the mary Foundation aims to improve the lives of children, adults and families in Denmark and Green-land who, as a result of their environment, background, illness or other circumstances, find themselves socially isolated or excluded. The Hempel Foundation also provides annual financial support to the royal Danish theatre for production of opera, ballet and drama. In addition, the Foundation is the sole sponsor of one new production every two years, focusing on modern pieces that stretch the artists‘ creative abilities.
