Just 55 years ago, the founders of Akiba saw the need for a great Jewish day school in the heart of Dallas. They envisioned a thoughtfully balanced academic program of general studies and Jewish scholarship. They wanted a place where children could learn how to be successful in the real world.

Akiba is realizing this vision, thanks to donors like you who supported our annual campaign to “Honor Our Past. Inspire Our Future.” I’m pleased to share with you this new annual report as another way we are thanking donors for their commitment to Akiba.

We are especially proud to report that parents, faculty, staff, grandparents and friends gave more than $755,000 to bolster academics, Judaic Studies, financial aid and more. More than 340 donors stepped forward in support of Akiba, including 100 percent of our board members and 75 percent of our parents.

To all who gave, thank you for recognizing that tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating our children. Every gift to Akiba helps bridge this gap. For example, this year Akiba ushered in new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math initiatives), including weekly labs for Lower School. New STEM coordinator Leidy Luciani lit up classrooms all over campus, inspiring students to create clouds, build rockets and understand the physics behind the “egg drop” project.

Our B’not Sherut program brought two dynamic Israelis to spend a year embedded in our school community. They brought their knowledge of Hebrew, Judaism and Israel to each one of our students, from our infants up to our 8th graders. They enriched learning by immersing our students in projects, like an all-Hebrew “The Wizard of Oz” that blew our guests away. Experiential learning opportunities provided hands-on learning outside of the classroom to help teach our students skills they need for real-world success. Students participated in experiential learning opportunities such as: an integrated music and science trip with the Dallas Symphony and the Dallas Zoo where students were able to compose their own music to animal movements; a trolley ride downtown to experience neighbor-hoods, communities, and our city first-hand; a true pioneer’s adventure at the Log Cabin Village, and much more.

As we welcome more than 35 new students this fall, we are excited for the new year and grateful for our Akiba family.

Sincerely,

Tammie Rapps, Head of School
