THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF “HUNGER”

This week we are concentrating on HUNGER as a “life issue.” Obviously,

most all of us know about physical hunger. This kind of hunger is a physical condition

that we experience when we haven’t taken in enough food to satisfy our needs. We are

short on the “fuel” that it takes to keep us going. We know when we are hungry because

our stomachs growl, we feel faint and out of sorts, we experience a sense of weakness.

Most of the time, we are able to rectify our hunger by eating, but if we let it go long

enough, physical hunger can cause real medical challenges for us. Physical hunger is a

huge problem in the world – and each day more than 21,000 people die of starvation

around the world – that is 7,665,000 each year. This is a real problem. As Christian peo-

ples we are called to help address this situation – especially given the fact that the Unit-

ed States has the capacity to produce enough food to supply the whole world.

Physical hunger is a difficult issue, but it isn’t the only kind of “hunger” that

human beings encounter in their lives. For example, we all are “hungry” for affection

and connection, too. This is an emotional hunger. We long for relationships and friend-

ships that are truly meaningful and when they are not there in our lives we experience

suffering. Think of how impoverished our lives would be without a connection with

spouses, children, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends. People that we can

count on and love. Loneliness in an epidemic that social media can’t remedy. In fact,

this hunger is so serious that a special office in England, given over to fielding the con-

cerns of aging people, receives 10,000 calls a week from people who are lonely and

hunger for human contact. This is a “life issue” as well. We take care of this kind of

hunger by a sense of purpose and a sense of being deliberate in our attempts to build

solid relationships with others.

Another kind of hunger that we experience is the “hunger for meaning.” We

live in a world where people often feel devalued and without substance in their lives.

They don’t take joy in their work, they don’t find satisfaction in the contributions they

make to others, they don’t feel as if their lives have real meaning to anyone save them-

selves. All human beings want to know that their existence counts for something. We

don’t always want it to be something big and important, but we do want to know that

the world has been a better place for us having passed through it. When we sense that

our contributions aren’t valued we become sad, distressed and lackluster. Psychologists

often describe this hunger for meaning as achievement – and when we fail to feel that

we have achieved something in life, we experience burn out – a sense of exhaustion,

depression and detachment. This kind of hunger is a “life issue, too.” We remedy this

kind of hunger by sharing our talents, our ideas, our dreams, our hopes with those

around us – who can and will be touched by our vision and our efforts.

Finally, we all have a huge “hunger for God.” This is one of the most im-

portant hunger pangs that we experience as we trudge through life. We want a relation-

ship and a connection with God, Who loves us, guides us and protects us. I believe that

everyone of us has a hole in the middle of us that is like the hole in the donut. I call this

hole the “God hole.” This hole in us can only be filled by God Himself. When that hole

is empty it makes us ache and long for it to be filled. Oh, we try often enough when we

are really hungry for God, to fill that hole with everything we can think of that might

make us feel better. We try to fill it with things like fame, pleasure, power, wealth, posi-

tion, human relationships, earthly achievements – but ultimately, none of these things

work. Lacking God in life, many people feel cut off and cast adrift. This kind of hunger

is one of the biggest life issues we face. The remedy here is to fill the “God hole” with a

real relationship with the Good Lord.

Hunger is a big problem in our lives. It is a big problem physically, emotional-

ly and spiritually. On the one hand, hunger means not having enough to eat (physically

or any other way) and when that happens we suffer accordingly.

The Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls is currently seeking a candidate for the position of

Catholic Family Sharing Appeal 2018 We continue to collect pledge cards for the Catholic Family Sharing Appeal—2018. This is an opportunity for us to unite with all Catholics in the diocese to share our blessings and to show our concern for one another. Every gift, regardless of the size, is important to the success of Catholic Family Sharing Appeal and the many ministries that it supports. If you did not bring in your pledge card this week, please fill it out and return it as soon as possible. We need participation from everyone to support the many works of our diocesan church. Our goal is 100% participation through time, talent and treasure. Again, any amount raised above the goal will stay in our parish. To those who have returned their cards, thank you for your generous response.

Presentation Sisters Catholic School Scholarship 2018-2019

Forty $750 scholarships are available to students attending catholic K-12 schools in the

Sioux Fall Diocese and three $1500 scholarships to students attending Catholic high

school in the Sioux Falls Diocese (one to each high school). Applications can be picked up

in the parish offices. Applications and essays are due by March 2, 2018.

Court Mother Teresa of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas awards a $300 scholarship annually to any student attending a post-secondary school in the Fall of 2018. The deadline for submission is May 1, 2018. Application forms for the scholarship are now available in the church office.

On the other hand, we sometimes try to remediate our hunger by gorging ourselves

on food (whatever the “food” may be) and we end up throwing up everything we have

taken in. Either way, the result is the same – we lack nutrition and the fuel to keep on

“trucking.” The truth is that hunger is best addressed when we seek a sense of balance

and self-control in our lives. When we understand that it is not healthy for us to try to

take in everything in our path – in the attempt to fix the various kinds of hunger we feel.

Learning this sense of balance and self-control and generosity is a “life-long issue” as

well.

The Knights of Columbus are requesting those that still have baby bottles for the St. Therese Baby Shower donations, we would like the baby bottles back even if donations were not given. We need to re-use the bottles for the next drive.

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Fish Fry each Friday evening following Stations of the Cross at 5:45. Cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 & under. Come enjoy some good food and fellowship!

The Good News of St. Therese - We are Growing

The good news is that St Therese parish is growing. Mass attendance is

increasing for a number of reasons, young people and young families are joining us in the celebration of the Mass. We are seeing an expansion in the

use of the parish to educate our young. This growth in serving our youth is

reflected in the large number of youth confirmed this year (17) and the numbers of students enrolled in Religious Education (over 150). With the

large number of youth being served and the demand for activity space to serve other parishioners, it is becoming apparent that the parish has a need to

increase the size of the campus. The Finance Council and Pastoral Council have been meeting with Father since early January to formulate a proposal

that will address the physical needs of the Parish campus to handle projected

growth. Details and costs will be presented to the members of the parish for their review and support in the next few months.
