It began in 1929 when Dent, then a 24 year old telegraph operator working for the Associated Press out of the offices of the Tulsa WORLD, sold his first pulp story to TOP-NOTCH, "Pirate Cay." From that time until 1939, Dent was a prolific pulp writer, churning out tons of stories and novels for the pulp chains, often under various pen and house-names. Chiefly, this frantic decade was dominated by his Doc Savage work. The years 1939-1949 were also largely concerned with DOC SAVAGE magazine, but Dent's outside pulp work took a back seat to more serious writing, including several hardcover mystery novels and his protracted attempt to crash the slick magazines like THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. With the cancellation of DOC SAVAGE in 1949, Dent's Herculean writing schedule was curtailed even more so, and only a handful of stories and books trickled out in the decade preceding his death in 1959. No one has ever attempted to document Lester Dent's amazing output over those thirty years. His versatility, frequent employment of pen-names and ghost writers, as well as his willingness to ghost write for others, makes assembling a definitive bibliography of Dent's work a tricky and demanding task. Dent kept sporadic records, maintained a file of most, but not all, of his published stories, and was not always successful in saving copies of his manuscripts. Still, with the help of his wife, Norma Dent, and after exhausting examinations of the Lester Dent papers and manuscripts, a reasonably complete and accurate bibliography of this talented and influential writer has been assembled. As far as it goes, it is accurate, but its completeness is open to question. There may be a handful of stories or other ephemera which have escaped inclusion here. The extent of Dent's early work in radio, for instance, may never be documented. He is known to have written a number of anonymous articles for Missouri newspapers, often in the form of reports on his own treasure hunting and travel activities, and many of these have not been included. Listings of British reprints, such as the Doc Savage novels published in the British DETECTIVE MONTHLY, are incomplete. Few, if any, of his pulp stories have been left out, so it is reasonable to assume that Dent's pulp fiction career is 98 to 99% documented. On the other hand, syndicated appearances of his later fiction have proven notoriously difficult to track down. However, the collector of Lester Dent material is more concerned with his adventure fiction, and he will find here, a thorough collation of all known examples of Dent's imaginative writings. In order to best illuminate this bibliography, a brief summation of Dent's writing career is offered. Dent's earliest sales were to some of the most prestigious pulp markets, like TOP NOTCH and THE POPULAR, but he hit several stretches in which he was often rejected. The first stretch was broken in late 1930 when Richard E. Martinsen of Dell telegrammed Dent an offer to put him up in New York on a monthly salary to write for his SCOTLAND YARD and SKY RIDERS magazines. For several months, Dent was a contract writer, but the Depression killed both magazines, as well as ALL-FICTION STORIES and the SCOTLAND YARD radio program for which Dent wrote. Another stretch of rejects followed until Dent mastered the ability to write in several pulp genres— western, aviation and detective. He created several series characters, including Lynn Lash, a scientific detective in the Craig Kennedy style, for DETECTIVE-DRAGNET MAGAZINE. Lash was the first of several "gadget" detectives Dent wrote about, and was in some respects a model for Doc Savage. In fact, it was a 1932 Lynn Lash story, "The Sinister Ray," which brought Dent to the attention of Street & Smith, who contacted him to write a Shadow novel, "The Golden Vulture," as a test before hiring him to inaugurate their new DOC SAVAGE MAGAZINE. Dent, working with Street & Smith business manager Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic, helped refine the company's concept for a bronze superman who travels the world combating evil with his five assistants. The final product was as much a committee effort as anything— although Ralston actually came up with the original idea and the name, Doc Savage, Lester Dent gave Doc life and individuality. Beginning in late 1932, Dent wrote the monthly novels under the house name of Kenneth Robeson, but only a year later grew restless and hired the first of many ghost writers to help him as he simultaneously began to develop a syndicated Doc Savage radio show, which he wrote for its first and only season in 1934.

Dent wrote in nervous bursts, never misseddeadlines and used several secretaries to type uphis final drafts. After experimenting, he took todictating his Doc novels into a dictaphone ordirectly to his secretaries. As a result, hedeveloped a natural, colloquial style that grew outof his instinctive story-telling ability. After DOCSAVAGE took off, Dent found little time to writeother pulp fiction, although a lull in the demandfor Docs occasioned by the frequent efforts ofghost writers enabled Dent to finally crack twomajor markets in the mid-thirties— ARGOSY andBLACK MASK. But even as he accomplishedthat, he was aiming higher, for the slickmagazines. He churned out scores and scores ofslick rejections while writing Doc and the ClickRush and Ed Stone stories for S&S' new CRIMEBUSTERS.
In 1940, he managed a few sales of slickstories to the TORONTO STAR WEEKLY, whichwas a Sunday newspaper supplement. His firstregular mystery novel, DEATH WORE SKIS,appeared there. Also in that year, slipping salesand other factors forced him to curtail the use ofghost writers on DOC SAVAGE, and hereluctantly buckled down to keep up with itsfiction-hungry needs. A few slick stories foundtheir way to secondary markets as Dent movedback to his home town of La Plata, Missouri forgood in 1940.
Around 1945, Dent began to reapply himselfto his long-deferred goal of cracking thehardcover mystery market. He sold three novelsto Doubleday, which were well-received critically,but did little to advance his career. Subsequentnovels failed to interest Doubleday and ended upin pulp magazines under pen names or withBritish publishers. Dent had hoped to leave DOCSAVAGE behind for these greener fields, and hadrehired his old ghost writers, but his failure tokeep selling books and the cutback of DOCSAVAGE from monthly to bi-monthly changed hisplans.
He continued turning out slick stories, sellingone, "River Crossing," to COLLIER'S just beforeDOC SAVAGE was cancelled in 1949. Thiscancellation severely curtailed Dent's annualincome, but he supplemented it with an aerialphotography service called Airviews, whichcarried him to 1952, at which time the demandsof the dairy farm left to him upon his father'sdeath in 1950 took precedence.
For most of the Fifties, Dent supervised twoLa Plata farms, writing sporadically for slick andthe new paperback markets. The pulps weredying and he didn't bother with those marketsanymore— he had done all he could with them,anyway. During this decade, Dent made fewsales. CRY AT DUSK, a Gold Medal paperbackoriginal was one, but his attempts to continueselling to Gold Medal didn't work out. An unsold1948 novel, LADY SO SILENT, was published inGreat Britain. When WAGON TRAIN adapted his"River " for TV, Dent tried to break into TVwriting, but he would not live long enough to putmuch effort into this.
In 1958, he succeeded in selling a Western,"Savage Challenge," to THE SATURDAYEVENING POST— a dream sale he'd toiled oversince the Thirties. A year later, his LADY INPERIL became half of an Ace Double. It was hislast sale. In February, 1959, he suffered a heartattack in La Plata, was hospitalized for threeweeks and on March 11, he died at the GrimSmith Hospital in Kirksville, Missouri.
Lester Dent was dead, but his work was not.In 1964, Bantam Books began reprinting his DocSavage novels with unexpected success. Sincethen, all of the 182 Doc novels have beenreprinted, creating a whole new audience ofappreciators. In addition, some of his other workhas been brought into print— some for the firsttime by professional and fan publishers alike.Although reprintings of Lester Dent's writingshave not been as extensive as those of some ofhis cult-creating contemporaries like Robert E.Howard and H.P. Lovecraft, there seems to be astrong thirst for Dent's work, which shows noindication of tapering off.
The bibliography that follows is achronological listing of first appearances of LesterDent's major writings, along with reprintings.Where the byline is not Lester Dent, a byline isgiven. Most of Dent's work appeared under theStreet & Smith housename of Kenneth Robeson(Kenneth Roberts, originally), which was thefictitious author of the Doc Savage novels and ofthe Ed Stone stories in CRIME BUSTERS. Dentdid most of the Doc Savages and all of the EdStones. Kenneth Robeson was the author of theAvenger novels as well, but Dent did not writethose. One of Dent's Click Rush stories in CRIMEBUSTERS appeared under the Robeson name.This was an editorial slip.

For Dell, Dent's earliest work appeared undera number of anonymous pseudo-bylines like ATulsa Detective, and later under an apparenthouse name, Johnny Wiley. For StandardMagazines, house names like Robert Wallaceand C.K.M. Scanlon were used to mask Dentcontributions. At Magazine Publishers, some earlywork earned the byline Cliff Howe. There'sevidence that this was a personal pen name ofDent's but was co-opted as a house name afterDent moved on. Beginning in 1938, this companybegan reprinting Dent material extensively in theirreprint titles like VARIETY DETECTIVE and SKYACES. In an effort to disguise these reprints, theychanged the titles, bylines and even characternames. This bibliography only scratches thesurface of those reprints. Many more Dentreprints may yet be discovered in WESTERNACES, IO-STORY DETECTIVE, 10 SHORTSTORIES, ALL NOVELS and other Ace pulps. Aslate as 1958, Ace was still using the Cliff Howename on paperback anthologies.
Dent's only known personal pen names wereTim Ryan and Harmon Cash. While he submittedwork under the name of H.O. Cash, no pulpstories so bylined have ever been discovered.(See H.O. Cash section for more details.)
Where a story is part of a series, thecharacter's name and a series number is given.For reasons of clarity, the Gadget Man series inCRIME BUSTERS is called the Click Rush series.This character is not to be confused with the heroof "The Thirteen Million Dollar Robbery, who isalso named Click Rush.

The idea was for writersto donate unsalable stories to him, he wouldpublish them in his magazines with the fee goingto this fund. In response, Dent shipped anindeterminate number to Margulies, after firstchanging the byline to H. O. Cash. Only threehave been found in print, all bylined with Thrillinghouse names of Robert Wallace and C.K.M.Scanlon. The fate of the others and theirpublished bylines remains unknown. Very likelyall were given the Thrilling house nametreatment. Many might have escaped publicationentirely. An incomplete list of the missing storiesfollows.
