Mavericks Festival planned SaturdayPARKING AT

HMB AIRPORTThe monster waves never

came this year, but Mavericks Invitational surf contest orga-nizers aren’t letting that ruin a good party. Though the con-test window closes this week-end, they are planning the fi rst-ever Mavericks Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sat-urday on the grounds of the Oceano Hotel and Spa and Harbor Village in Princeton.

The festival will feature music from Dank Jenkins, Barfi ght and The Expend-ables, food, and footage re-corded from previous surf contest. Organizers say they

will also give awards for best Mavericks wipeout, perfor-mance and other superla-tives.

Organizers say they expect 5,000 visitors. Those who bought non-refundable tick-ets to the contest may use them for the festival.

The California Highway Patrol hadn’t decided wheth-er to close roads by Review print deadlines. No parking signs will be posted on High-way 1; parking will be avail-able at Half Moon Bay Air-port.

Coastsider Eric Byrnes will serve as event emcee. Tickets are available at www.maver-icksinvitational.com.

Ginny Fizz sinks — again

BOAT POSES LITTLE THREAT TO

ENVIRONMENTBy Lily Bixler

[ [email protected] ]

Rainstorms sunk the old Monterey-style fi shing boat Ginny Fizz on March 18. But even with the vessel a few feet below water level, a rope still carefully ties the beat-up boat to F dock at Pillar Point Har-bor.

At one point the boat was used to fi sh salmon, but Ginny Fizz hasn’t moved much in the past fi ve years.

Except, that is, when the boat sank a few years ago.

Green paint had been ap-plied to the boat fairly recent-ly. However, the pieces that are supposed to come together at the bow have cracked, leaving protruding screw pegs.

The rainwater accumulat-ed onboard and brought the boat beneath water, explained Assistant Harbormaster John Draper. He compared the boat to a sieve.

Draper said he called the owner twice to ask about get-ting the boat raised. While the harbor offi ce is eager to get the boat raised, Draper said, it’s not causing any harm to the harbor or its neighboring boats. While Draper put some oil-absorbing boom around the boat after it sunk, it was just to be safe: no oil was on board.

Lifting boats can be an ex-pensive proposition. Draper estimated it would cost about $10,000 if San Mateo Coun-ty Harbor District contracted a company to come in for the job.

A boat sinks at Pillar Point Harbor about once a year, usu-ally because of a lack of main-tenance. r

Public invited to discuss pending post offi ce move

The upcoming sale and relocation of the Half Moon Bay post offi ce will be discussed in a public meeting today.

Postal offi cials announced in De-cember that they would be selling the 13,500-square-foot branch offi ce on Stone Pine Road and looking to move to a smaller location in the Half Moon Bay area. The change comes as part of a nationwide series of closures to cut costs.

Postal offi cials say they are still look-ing for a suitable location to move all postal operations and mailboxes.

The meeting is meant to provide an opportunity for postal offi cials to ex-plain the transition and answer ques-tions from the public.

Two meetings are scheduled, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on March 28 at the Half Moon Bay Post Offi ce at 500 Stone Pine Road. Anyone interest-ed can also submit questions or com-

ments 15 days after the meeting to Di-ana K. Alvarado, Facilities Planning and Requirements, 395 Oyster Point Bou-levard, Suite 225, South San Francisco, CA 94080.

Health Week activities setSan Mateo County joins in the ac-

knowledgment of National Public Health Week, April 2 through 8.

This year, the theme “A Healthier San Mateo County Begins Today: Join the Movement” focuses on small changes that can lead to better health.

“Public Health Week is a call to ac-tion, and everyone in the County has an important role to play,” said San Mateo County Health Offi cer Dr. Scott Mor-row in a prepared release. “Even small changes to a person’s daily routine, like walking more, reducing stress, eating healthier, supporting smoke-free and sugar-free policies, and having regu-lar wellness checkups can make a huge difference in helping people live health-

ier and longer lives.” There are free ac-tivities, classes and presentations which can be accessed at http://smchealth.org.

Governor recognizes tsunami preparation

California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a proclamation on Tuesday, recognizing Tsunami Awareness Week and encour-aging Californians to prepare for the next big wave.

The governor mentioned the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan, noting that it left one Californian dead and resulted in tens of millions of dollars of property damage on the state’s coast.

Brown mentioned the work done by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California Emergency Management Agency and others to bet-ter prepare for tsunami.

March 25 through 31 is Tsunami Pre-paredness Week.
