harles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (originally t i t led A Christmas Carol in Prose , Being a Ghost Story of Christmas ) was f irst published in London on 19 December 1843. The novella about a miserly curmudgeon and his spiritual redemption after being visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve was an instant success. In fact , the

l i t t le book sold out within three days.A Christmas Carol has proved so popular that , over the years, i t

has seen over 50 f i lm and television adaptations, including versions starring Mickey Mouse, Blackadder, the Fl intstones and the Muppets. Not surprisingly, theatre companies around the world have found the show to be the cash cow that al lows them to fund many of their more “non-commercial” efforts .

This raises the questions “Why another Christmas Carol?”, “Why Texas?”, and “Why a musical?”

There’s no disputing the power of Dickens’ themes: social injustice and poverty, the relationship between the two, and their causes and effects . However, some modern readers, especial ly those younger ones, might have diff iculty deciphering the Victorian prose of the original . We thought an audience might appreciate a more modern and colloquial “translation” of the material . Additionally, we felt that we’d l ike to relate the show more directly to the American holiday tradit ion, rather than chronicl ing the English Christmas of the 1840s. And f inally, we must confess, we are suckers for stories of redemption.

In her introduction to Wallace O. Chariton’s This Dog’ l l Hunt (a book that was the source and inspiration for many of the “Texasisms” in our play) , the late Ann Richards wrote:

So we’ve used this “common talk” to tel l our story. The richness of the Texas verbal tradit ion clearly lends i tself to this treatment of Dickens’ story. Think about i t : can you imagine an adaptation cal led A New Jersey Christmas Carol?

Musically, we strove to showcase the broad spectrum of musical styles in our state. In a region with so many different types of music to appreciate, we wanted to draw upon that diversity in the music for our show.

We hope you enjoy i t . Or, to put i t another way, we hope you have more fun than a horned frog on a red ant hi l l !

“Growing up, as I did, in rural Central Texas, I heard some of the most colorful spoken language extant. . . Of course i t was country and rural and it was occasionally crude. But mostly i t was humorous. I t added the sparkle of a sl ight smile to common talk.”

In times like these, some schools are cutting back their programs in the arts. Not Fort Worth Country Day. Our commitment to the arts is as strong as ever. Students participate in a multitude of creative endeavors under the guidance of committed professionals who are practicing actors, musicians, and teachers. FWCD families and alumni enthusiastically support arts education by attending concerts, plays, assemblies and musicals.

Myth:The performing arts are “extras” in school.

Truth:Fort Worth Country Day considers the performing arts a primary pillar of a child’s education. Our performing arts program is robust and growing.

W r i t e r s & d i r e C t O r14Gary Moody (Book, Lyrics, Narrator) has worked as an actor, announcer, writer and director on stage and in films and television for over 35 years. As such, he is a member of Actors’ Equity Association (AEA), the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Previous appearances at Circle Theatre include The Retreat from Moscow (Best Performance by a

Male Actor, Fort Worth Weekly), Bus Stop (Column Award nomination) and Unnecessary Farce. His web site www.theOscarSite.com, which started out as a hobby in the late 1980s, has become a definitive source for information on the Academy Awards®. A graduate of the University of North Dakota, Gary is one of the founding members of refUNDtheatre, an organization devoted to funding recruitment of talented students to the UND Theatre Arts program.

Gary Taylor (Music Director, Music & Lyrics, Guitar) was born here in Ft. Worth while his parents were students at TCU, so it is fitting that Circle Theatre is the setting for Gary’s musical work. Gary began playing guitar when he was 11 years old, and was composing music at 15. After taking piano and classical guitar lessons, he became interested in theory and composition. During his thirties, Gary could be found teaching high school mathematics and music theory, and playing music around

town with his band, The Works. It was also during these years that he scored and recorded his first musical, McMulligan and Reigh, which was performed by his band, along with the SMU symphony orchestra. A master’s degree in mathematics and many more original songs followed through the years. He has also written a book on math and music, which he hopes to promote someday soon. Gary has 3 daughters, 2 granddaughters, 1 grandson, and a wife of 36 years.

Chris robinson (Director) is excited to make his Circle debut after last directing Ruthless! for Flower Mound Performing Arts Theatre. Earlier this year, Chris directed OnStage’s hit production of The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. Some of his other directing credits include: Greater Lewisville Community Theatre, Guys & Dolls; Sage & Silo: The Rocky Horror Show & Cotton Patch Gospel; OnStage: La Cage Aux Folles. Chris has performed in the DFW theater community for

over 19 years, as well as several regional theaters across the country. A Rabin and multiple Column award winner, Chris serves on the board of directors for The Column Awards and produces the multi-media for the ceremony each year.
