A long, long time ago, there lived

a very rich prince. He lived in a huge

palace with gold and silver ornaments

everywhere. He had riches beyond the

wildest dreams of ordinary boys and

girls. The rooms in his palace were very

big indeed and the ceilings were high

enough for a giant to walk around in

them with comfort.

The prince was called Rashnu. He

wore big baggy shorts with silver and

gold stitched into them. He had gold

slippers that curled up at the front.

His waistcoat had real diamonds and

pearls on it and his turban held a

special jewel as big as your hand.

Rashnu had servants for

everything. He had servants that

would bring him food on big gold plates.

He had servants that would bring him

a bowl of scented water sprinkled with

rose petals just so that he could wash

his hands. He had servants to help him

get dressed in the morning and

servants to help him get undressed at

night and he had any number of

servants to wait on him in between.

Every morning the servants would

parade in front of him. They would bow

their heads and wait for their

instructions. Rashnu often asked them

to play games with him. Of course they

did their best, but they really weren’t

much fun. They just didn’t know how

to play. They had never played games

themselves. Even as children they had

had to work. They were made to work

from when they were very young

indeed. Even before they were six

years old, they were put to work doing

jobs like gathering wood for the fire

and fetching water from the well in

the village.

Rashnu spent a lot of time lying on

his big four poster bed. He had

servants who used to stand by the side

of the bed waving giant feathers to

keep him cool. The problem with

Rashnu was that he was bored. There

were no other children for him to play

with in the palace. Rashnu dreamt

about leaving his life behind. He saw

himself floating around the world on a

flying carpet.

and, best of all, he imagined himself

flying up to the moon.

Rashnu was the richest boy in the

whole wide world but he was lonely.

The idea that his father, the King,

would let him play with any children

who were not from the royal household

was, quite frankly, ridiculous. Rashnu

never met anyone from outside of the

palace. He knew very little about life

beyond the palace walls because he

was very seldom allowed beyond them.

Whenever he was sent to visit outside

of the palace it was usually on some

holy day or other and he would be sent

to one of the great temples in his land.

Such visits never really cured his

curiosity about the outside world

because Rashnu was made to travel in

royal style. He sat in a box that had

velvet cushions and thick velvet

curtains and servants carried him

around in it. He never got to see

anything of his land but he loved the

sounds and smells of the market place.

He longed to pull back the curtains and

see who was making all of the noise

but he knew he mustn’t, it was

forbidden. It had been explained to

Rashnu that his position in life meant

that he should remain removed from

ordinary people and that the ways of

such folk should remain a mystery to

him, just as the ways of royal life

should remain a mystery to all but a

chosen few.

The long, hot summer days passed

slowly for Rashnu, his lessons were

boring and he didn’t take to schoolwork

much. His teachers were wise old men,

but nothing that they said held any

interest for him. His mind flitted from

fancy to fancy. He could never really

concentrate on the dry lifeless history

lessons that he was made to endure.

Once a week, he would be granted

an audience with his father, the King.

His heart leapt with joy whenever

their meetings drew near. He loved his

father with all of his heart and the

weekly meetings were the best part

of his week. His teachers would lead

the way and Rashnu would follow

behind them. They walked up the long

aisle that led to where the King sat in

waiting on his throne. The teachers

would bow down before him and walk

backwards to the side of the room

leaving Rashnu to stand before him.

The King always smiled when he set

his eyes upon Rashnu. All of the

servants told Rashnu that the weekly

meetings made the King smile more

than anything else. Rashnu was asked

by the King to talk about his lessons

and Rashnu would recite all of the

facts and figures that he had learnt

that week. This pleased the King

greatly and he would hold his hand out

for Rashnu to come forward.

The young prince would kneel down

before the King and kiss his royal ring.

The King was pleased with his son and

sometimes stroked the young prince’s

cheek or held his chin in his hand. The

servants, too, looked forward to the

weekly meetings because they knew

that it always put the King in a good

mood.

Rashnu was a good son. He seldom

got to meet his mother or any of the

Kings other wives. He never got to

meet his sisters, and he had no

brothers, but he remained a good son.

He understood that his position meant

that he had responsibilities in life and

he was determined to make his father

proud of him.

Rashnu would never knowningly

have done anything to upset his father,

but one day, he was out walking around

the grounds of the palace, when he

overheard some children playing on the

other side of the palace walls. He

wanted to shout out to them to say

hello and ask them if he could come

and play with them. It was no use

though, no matter how much his heart

yearned to play with the children from

the village, he knew that it could never

be so. His heart sank as he listened to

them running and playing and laughing.

Now that he was so close to them he

felt lonelier than ever. He decided to

go back and lie on his bed. Even though

he would be alone there, he wouldn’t

be tormented by the sounds of

children playing.

As he made his way up the great

stone steps back to the palace, a

daring thought came into his mind. He

had never walked up the steps to the

roof of the palace. They were a long

way up and he was not allowed to climb

them. It was far too dangerous, but

he thought to himself that if he were

to climb up there this once, he would

be able to look out over the palace

walls and he would see what it was like

for children who were allowed to run

and play games, to laugh and have fun.

His heart began to beat faster as he

decided whether to sneak up the steps

or to go back to the safety of his

room. He knew which was the right

choice to make, but the lure of the

roof and the freedom that it would

give him was too much. He looked all

around him, to see if there was

anybody watching him. He couldn’t see

or hear anybody. He thought about

his father and how angry he would be
