A Look into the Works of: Henry Moore

Created and Presented by: Ms. Steinmetz

Key Facts…

• Direct carving process- subtractive – Different from modeling (clay) or casting (bronze)

• Worked in the abstract– Human forms fragmented and reduced to essential

forms. – Nature forms (pebbles, shells, bones)

• Art that inspired Moore: Michelangelo, Surrealism

Reclining Figureplaster, 1951

Subtractive Sculpture

• Oldest form of sculpture

• Involves REMOVING (subtracting) material such as stone or wood to create a finished work

• The most technically difficult form of sculpture; demand of time and the one of a kind results don’t allow for reproduction

Michelangelo Buonarroti

• Greatest stone sculptor ever known; Renaissance.

• Worked in marble; selected his blocks.

• Pre-visualize the form within the stone. He would began by striking the stone, knocking off great chunks, then used a rasp to roughly file off the stone. Finally he sanded and polished the image to perfection.

“…Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”

David 1504

Your goals…

• Designing in the Abstract– Inspired by biomorphic forms

(shapes reminiscent of nature/living organisms)

• Subtractive Carving Process – Chipping/carving/removing/ filing

away

• Interesting 360 degrees. – Aim for 60% (+ space) and 40%

(- space)
