FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH JANUARY 25, 2012 WINCHESTER, VA.
VOL. 73 NO. 2
A Loving & Caring Church Transforming God’s Vision Into Action
Galatians 5:5 - 6 says, “But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the
righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision
or uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith
expressing itself through love.” (NIV) This passage, like many in the New
Testament, describes the Christian life in terms of faith, hope, and love.
Faith: The nearest thing to a definition of faith in the New Testament is
found in Hebrews 11:1. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
the conviction of things not seen.” (RSV) Faith is a special perception about life that
enables us to see that behind the material, physical world - there is a spiritual, eternal
world. Through faith we become convinced that the spiritual, eternal world is the most
important. Faith gives our lives perspective and purpose.
Hope: A concise statement about hope is found in Romans 8:24 - 25. “For in this hope we
were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has?
But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” (NIV) Hope is a
special patience in life that enables us to keep going in the darkness, because of what faith
has enabled us to see in the light. Hope enables us to persevere.
Love: A clear definition of love is found in John 15:13. “Greater love has no one than this,
that he lay down his life for his friends.” (NIV) Love is a special passion toward life that
motivates us to give of ourselves, in order to meet the needs of others. Love will put the
other person first.
In light of these three qualities, what then is a Christian? According to Brian Harbour, a
Christian is one who approaches life with a faith outlook, which enables him to live in hope,
and which leads him to reach out in love.
Faith, hope, and love are available to us through God’s Holy Spirit. Why not focus, in this
new year, on these attributes and allow God’s power to manifest them in our lives?

Think It Over
I’ll go where you want me to go, dear Lord, real service is what I desire;
I’ll say what you want me to say, dear Lord - BUT DON’T ASK ME TO SING IN THE CHOIR.
I’ll say what you want me to say, dear Lord, I like to see things come to pass.
But don’t ask me to teach girls and boys, dear Lord - I’D RATHER JUST STAY IN MY CLASS.
I’ll do what you want me to do, dear Lord, I yearn for the Kingdom to thrive.
I’ll give you my nickels and dimes, dear Lord - BUT PLEASE DON’T ASK ME TO TITHE.
I’ll go where you want me to go, dear Lord, I’ll say what you want me to say.
I’m rushed just now with myself, dear Lord - I’LL HELP YOU SOME OTHER DAY.

FROG Needs Your Support!
Not the amphibian — the area’s foster
parents, Families Reaching Out Group, need your help
collecting clothing and other children’s items for foster
children. Many times items are needed on short notice, so the
group has started a new project called Our Children’s
Closet. By collecting clothes of different sizes for different
seasons and other children’s items, they’ll pool their
resources and be able to get what they need quickly, without
the added stress of shopping. Look for receptacles at FBC to
leave new or gently used children's clothing and other
children’s items. Contact Jennifer Turman Bayliss for
additional information (540) 327-2118. Cash donations to the
non-profit organization are also
appreciated.

Lessons For Today?
In 1788 Edward Gibbon completed his work “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,” in which he listed 5 reasons for that fall:
1 - The rapid increase of divorce: the undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the basis of human society. 2 - Higher and higher taxes and the spending of public money for free bread and circuses for the populace. 3 - The mad craze for pleasure: sports becoming every year more exciting and more brutal. 4 - The building of gigantic armaments when the real enemy was within, the decadence of the people. 5 - The decay of religion - faith fading into mere form - losing touch with life and becoming impotent to guide the people.

Annual Week of Prayer Services Our community is exceedingly fortunate in being able to have Dr. E. Stanley Jones as its speaker for its annual united Week of Prayer Services… We consider ourselves doubly blessed in being able to have Dr. Jones speak in
our church while in Winchester. Dr. Jones, a distinguished missionary, evangelist and author is one of the most widely known and best loved Christians in the world today. Few living men have had the opportunity to observe at first hand in such numbers, men and women with their individual problems, and nations with their collective problems. When one hears his earnest message, one feels the impact of a sincere personal prayer, “Thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven - beginning with me.”
Sanctuary arrangements are needed for
the 2012 calendar year. If you would like
to place an arrangement in memory or in
honor of a loved one, please fill out a pink
Flower Calendar form found in each
narthex or the Church Office. You may also
call the Church Office to place your
request.
WATTS Week Almost Here
WATTS (Winchester Area Temporary
Thermal Shelter) is providing shelter for
the homeless from November 28th through
March 12th. Our week begins February 13th,
2012. A training session will be held for all
volunteers on Sunday, February 5th, at
1:00pm in the Lower Auditorium. Sign-up
sheets are in the New Narthex. Monetary
donations are also greatly appreciated.
Something Looks Different About the Church Office…
If you’ve driven past the church office lately
you may have noticed something different
about it. The large tree growing between
the sidewalk and street is no longer there.
The tree is gone because a vehicle crash last
year damaged it. The City of Winchester
has constructed two concrete bollards
where the tree stood. A bollard is a short,
thick, reinforced post used to protect areas
from vehicle traffic. Although the loss of the
tree is unfortunate, the good news is that
the beautiful façade of the Church Office is
now easier to see from the street; and the
city is picking up the cost of protecting the
office from future damage as a result of
vehicles being unable to negotiate the turn
from Fairmont Ave. onto Piccadilly St. As
many of you know, in the past we’ve even
had a car in the building as a result of such
an accident.
Thank You WOM and SLC
Women on Mission made soup and
sandwiches for CCAP on January 14. By
partnering with “Son”Shine Learning
Center families, the group made
approximately 150 pints of soup and almost
800 sandwiches to help feed the hungry in
our community. Thanks to all from SLC and
WOM who helped. Special thanks to Emily
and Lauren Woodard and William Fletcher
for their great work. Let’s do it again!
Prayer Guide Available
Copies of the Greater Winchester Area
Daily Cycle of Prayer are available in both
narthexes. You are invited to use this
prayer guide to pray specifically each day
for our community.
Our New Members
A warm welcome is extended to Robert

Alyson, who made a decision for church
membership. Alyson is also a candidate for
baptism.
Ageless Adventurers Valentine’s Day Luncheon
On Tuesday, February 14, 2012 we will be having a Valentine’s Day
luncheon at The Battletown Inn in Berryville, Va. We will depart the
church at 11:00 a.m. and return by 2:00. This will be a lovely time of
good food and fellowship! Please call the church office no later than
February 10, 2012 to make your reservation to join us ! 662-5367
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
Here is the story of two young men who in 1983 wrote the song,
People Need the Lord, which is now also in many hymnals. Greg
Nelson and Phil McHugh give this story -
We were trying to write a song one day. We spent most of the
morning talking about different ideas. At lunch time we went to
a restaurant near our offices in Nashville. After being seated, a waitress came to our table. As
she approached us and smiled, it seemed that her eyes were so empty. She tried to convey a
cheerful attitude, but her face showed her despair. She took our order and walked away. We
looked at each other and one of us said to the other, she needs the Lord! We looked around
the restaurant at all the faces of the people there and realized that all of those people also
needed the Lord! We hurried back to the office and began to write down what was on our
hearts. The face of that waitress remained in our minds along with the realization that so
many people in the world need the hope of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
People Need the Lord Every day they pass me by, I can see it in their eyes;
Empty people filled with care, headed who knows where. On they go through private pain, living fear to fear. Laughter hides the silent tears only Jesus hears. People need the Lord. People need the Lord.
At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door.
People need the Lord.
