Great Lakes Res., 1985 The American Geographical Society (AGS) Collection, a major reference and research library, is: considered to be outstanding among the world's leading geographical libraries. Established in New Yorki City in the 1850s, the collection has been located in the Golda Meir Library of the University of! Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1978. Its holdings of over 400,000 maps, 6,000 atlases, 200,000 volumes books and periodicals, 110,000 photographs, 99,000 LANDSAT images, and 70 globes make the AG$ Collection indispensible for research in geography, cartography, and related fields. . Worldwide in scope, the AGS Collection includes many rare and interesting maps of the Great area, one of which is featured here. "A Map of the Five Great Lakes with part of Pensilvania, New York, Canada and Hudsons Bay Territories &c." appeared in a periodical entitled The London magazine ill! 1755. Although the name of the actual cartographer is not known, the map is an interesting tion of the Great Lakes region, indicating the locations of various forts and Indian tribes. The original map, in black and white, is a copper engraving measuring 8 1 /4" x 10 1 /4". 422
