The next dinner will be held November 12 at 6PM at the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce in Apple Valley. The topic is "Gold, Myths and Reality". The cost is $22.00 per person, students free. The annual SME Local Section dues of $15 for Professional & Registered Members for the current year 2013-2014 are due beginning in September. The dues can be paid at the meeting or by sending a check to our treasurer, Nicolette Grill, whose address in listed on page three. Space is available for business advertisers on the last page of our Newsletter at a cost of $50 per column inch per year. Please contact Edward Harrison, Newsletter & Email Administrator, for details regarding insertion of your ad. The annual renewal cost for the business ads are due beginning in September should be forwarded to our Treasurer, Nicolette Grill, who’s address in listed on page three. Beginning in September, student memberships in SME (which cost $31 per year) will be offered FREE to any full-time college student (undergraduate or graduate) majoring in Geology or mining related curriculum by our Southern California Mining Section. In order to qualify, interested students must attend an upcoming SME meeting and demonstrate a continuing interest in joining SME. Students will be required to complete a SME Student Membership Application and will receive full benefits as a Student Member of SME. Students are always welcome at our biannual meetings and field trips. The student cost for dinner at our regular meetings is $10.

SME September2013 Newsletter

Field Trip: Saturday, October 12 & 13 Copper Mountain

College and the Virginia Dale Gold District

Where to meet: Copper Mtn College in Joshua Tree. For registration and snacks.

When to meet: 8 AM, snack will be available.

What to Bring: Full tank gas, lunch, hats and water. Four wheel drive vehicles are a must as

the roads are not passable by otherwise.

Description of trip:

Saturday October 12

8am: Registration

9am: Jim Wharf of First Class Miners will give his presentation on mines and

mining at 9am.

10am: Jim’s associate, Tom will show and demonstrate old mining equipment from

about 10:00 am to 12 noon.

Noon: We will order sandwiches and have everyone take one as we go out to the

Virginia Dale, Supply Mine, and Gold Crown Mine with possibilities of

seeing the Old and New Dale town sites time permitting. Four wheel drive

vehicles are a must as the roads are not passable by otherwise. Upon arrival, a

lecture on district geology will be given by Prof, Bridenbecker;

Evening: Camp & dinner near Chambliss.

Lodging on your own.

Sunday October 13

9AM: Unguided Field Trip to Trona Gem and Mineral Show. Lots of fun and

displays, good saline minerals for sale; Hanksite, Trona, borax and halite. You

can dig in the Searles Lake mud if you want. The area has many other sites to

see.
