2016 Distinguished Alumni Awards

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,

Welcome to our 26th annual Distinguished Alumni Awards program.

Tonight we honor 10 of our most accomplished alumni, representing

the University’s Colleges and School of Nursing. These men and women

earned their degrees through hard work and determination and now

excel in their careers and their lives. They exemplify commitment to the

community, their professions and the University and are highly deserving

of the recognition we bestow upon them.

Cleveland State University is fortunate to have a worldwide alumni base

that is Viking strong at 120,000-plus members – and growing. As I begin

my two-year term as president of the Alumni Association, I look forward

to meeting and working with as many alumni as possible. Your support –

whether it’s volunteering, attending events, mentoring students, making a

financial contribution or just reading our communications and checking

our website (csualumni.com) – will help keep CSU and your Alumni

Association strong and growing.

Thank you for your support for this event, our University, and our

students. Together, we can ensure a pipeline of distinguished alumni far

into the future.

Sincerely,

Katherine Jennings, EMBA ’09

For more than two decades, Ed “Flash” Ferenc was part of one of the

most popular radio programs in the nation, the “Jeff and Flash Show,” later

known as the “Buzzard Morning Zoo,” on WMMS Radio in Cleveland.

His radio career began at Cleveland State University, working at campus

radio station WCSU. When the news director from WHK/WMMS called

WCSU looking for an intern to write news copy, he jumped at the opportunity.

Mr. Ferenc gained a following among listeners when he’d “flash” into the

studio, handing news copy to the show host just as a record was ending. The

nickname “Flash” stuck and soon he was delivering the news on air.

His career soared when he teamed with Jeff Kinzbach for “Jeff and Flash.”

The show skyrocketed WMMS’ rating share and Cleveland became known

as the city of rock and roll. When the station changed owners, Jeff and Flash

said goodbye to listeners on April 15, 1994.

Today, Mr. Ferenc works as a public information officer for the Cleveland

Municipal Court. He also hosts a daily labor radio program, “America’s

Workforce,” on WERE.

His real dedication, though, lies with his work to cure multiple sclerosis. His

twin daughters, Rachael and Stephanie, were both diagnosed with MS so

he founded a charity called Motivate My Sister, which has raised close to

$150,000.
