A Message from Newark

Mayor Sharpe James

Dear Friend,

People are always disposing of clothing they’ve outgrown, furniture that’s become worn and toys the kids nolonger play with. But as long as these items are still usable, the landfill is the last place we should want to putthem. After all, our planet is facing an environmental crisis because our throwaway society encourages short-term use and disposal of products. As a result, we’re consuming vast amounts of natural resources and runningout of places to put our trash.

You have probably heard the expression,“one person's trash is another person'sgold.” We feel we can reduce waste by getting usable items that one person mightthrow away into the hands of those who would consider these items valuableresources. That’s why we created Second Chances:The Planet Newark Guide toDonating Unwanted Goods. This booklet is designed to provide residents and busi-nesses in Newark with information on local organizations that accept donations ofused household and office items.

Next time you have some unwanted but usable items in the home or office, pick upthis guide and find an organization that would appreciate them. You would not onlybe doing something positive for the environment, but also for some of the manynonprofit organizations that will use your goods for the benefit of the Newark com-munity. Listed here are some 60 groups that work on behalf of youth, seniors, thehomeless and many others in need.

Thank you for using this guide and for giving your unwanted goods a Second Chance.
