SEPTEMBER 2015
Members All, Did you ever wonder why this time of year is called the “Dog Days” of summer? I think it may have something to do with the excitement shown by our furry friends when we come home. Now, I’m not insinuating that we are dogs but there certainly is a growing excitement in the air around the Lodge as we anticipate the return of our part-year Members. Now, be a good boy and don’t jump up on ‘em. Another thing that has been in the news quite a bit lately is politics. It seems everybody and his brother have announced their intentions to run for office. I encourage each of our
members to consider what you plan to do in 2016-2017. It’s not too early to announce your candidacy. If you’re unhappy with the job the current administration is doing “change it”. My thanks to all who have stepped up this year. I am grateful to Each of you for all the hard work you do for this Lodge. Helpers are always wanted and desperately needed. The more things we can do for ourselves the more we can do for others.
Fraternally, ER Rick

August saw an increase in membership applications and affiliation requests, a positive position we like to see. We started our fiscal
year with 484 members, and have added 15 either by initiation, affiliation or reinstatement. We have had 1 member transfer out of
State and 4 members die leaving us with a net gain to-date of 10. National has goals of a net gain in membership of 10% more than
the start of the year. The concern is unpaid dues, currently standing at 76 delinquents. The list of unpaid members is posted on the
bulletin board, please, if you are friends with anyone on the list talk to them about the Elks and all our charitable work. Perhaps a
little nudge will bring them back. Our goal is no more than 2% of our Member’s delinquent by the end of the Lodge year.
The following have applied for membership:
Herbert A. Soper, proposed by Bernie Lyster
Karen Kay Brown, proposed by John Buchanan Constance L. Allman, proposed by Dorothy Ann Chmielewski
An Application for Affiliation was received from Reginald Dalton; he is currently affiliated with the Scotia-Glenville,
NY Lodge no. 2759.
We plan on holding two initiations in September, the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays.
Orientation is scheduled for September 9th at 6:30 P.M. Proposers, Officers and Committee chairs are encouraged to participate.
Members are always welcome at Orientation. It’s a known fact that the member who develops friendships with other Elks will re-
main an Elk. This is a great time to connect with the candidate and make them feel welcome.
Keep the applications coming and lets work towards meeting our membership goals!
Respectfully submitted,
Lorraine

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED ??? Interesting Facts about the ELKS
Continuation from the August Issue of the Horn: Social Club Management and Supervision: Lodges may choose in their bylaws between 4 options of governing their club facilities. #1. Exalted Ruler, Leading Knight, Loyal Knight, Lecturing Knight and the Trustees of the Lodge #2. Board of Trustees of the Lodge #3. By a House Committee (of not less than 3 or more that 13) to be appointed by the Exalted Ruler #4. Board of Directors of a corporrtaion consisting of Chaired Officer and Trustees. Note=OUR Lodge #1557 is Managed and Supervised by the HOUSE Committee consisting of 5 members. Past Exalted Ruler’s Association Past Exalted Rulers are not considered officers, but rather a valuaabale advisory resource. A Lodge’s PAST Exalted Ruler’s Assoc. usually meets monthly and current officers are encouraged to seek counsel from those that have led Lodges in previous years. National Charity Programs Lodges are encouraged to participate in national Elks Charity Programs as well of the State Elks Assoc. char-ity programs. Also due to the willingness of most Elks Lodges they respond to community needs and events. It is also common to turn the BPOE abbreviation into a backronym for “The Best People on Earth”. ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION was established in 1928. It is the charitable arm of the BPOE. The foun-dation, with an endowment valued at more than $400 Million, has contributed $253.50 Million toward the Charitable projects nationwide. The ELKS pledge that “so long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will Never forget them. Also Youth Programs and a National Foundation Scholarships and Americanism is a very important part of the National Foundation. Also part of this in invested in Community programs, such as Impact Grants and Promise Grants. To be continued in October issue.
