A message from the GM Pryda Australia and New Zealand Conferences One of the most important discussions from the recent Pryda conferences was the impact of detailing bottlenecks on manufacturing capacity. In both Australia and New Zealand there are many instances of under utilised factories due to delays in preparing final specifications for frame and truss manufacture. The natural inclination is to hire more detailing staff to cater for periods of high demand but this becomes a costly exercise and is difficult to achieve with very few skilled truss and frame detailers on the market. Although obvious, one of the answers is to increase the effectiveness of existing detailing staff via useful and consistent training. Data collected by Pryda from customer calls to the Software Support help desk and log-ins from Pryda’s on line Learning Management System reveal that many Pryda Build users do not invest time to improve their knowledge. There are opportunities for users to use new features and adopt best practice processes to accelerate detailing without compromising compliance. Understandably, this is an opportunity to be tackled by both Pryda and its customers - “we provide the training infrastructure and you provide the commitment”. A message from the GM Pryda Australia and New Zealand Conferences

One of the most important discussions from the recent Pryda conferences was the impact of detailing bottlenecks on manufacturing capacity.

Feel free to contact your local Pryda representative for more information.

On a final note, the staff at Pryda wishes to thank all our customers for their support in 2014 and we hope everyone has a safe Christmas, returning with renewed enthusiasm and energy in 2015.

The Pryda conferences were held in October as part of our 50th birthday celebrations. While the conference gave us the opportunity to reflect on where we have come from, it also allowed us to present facts from our market research, which in turn influence Pryda’s business strategies.

NZ Conference

The NZ conference was held on Thursday 9th October at the Floating Pavilion in Auckland Harbor viaduct precinct. The venue provided excellent conferencing facilities for both the presentations and the evening dinner. Large passing watercraft may have “rocked the boat” a little, but added to the uniqueness of the location and the enjoyment of all participants at the conference.

The following day a number of delegates took up the offer to participate in some extracurricular activity, either the Auckland Harbor bridge climb or a fishing trip. The bridge climb proved popular, with some brave souls taking advantage of the opportunity to up the adrenalin rush by bungee jumping off the bridge!! Congratulations to Gary Fowell from Eastern Bay Frame & Truss and Dave Burke from Acorn ITM who made the jump.

Those who were on the fishing trip also had a terrific day out, even though some where a little green around the gills, a side effect of the previous night’s activities. Unfortunately, the fish were not biting on the day and only a small amount of fish ended up in the bucket. At least everyone enjoyed the onboard catering and company.

Pryda Australia and New Zealand Conferences

Australian Conference

The Australian conference was held the following week from lunchtime on Monday 13th October and concluded at lunchtime the next day. The luxurious venue, the Aitken Hill conference centre, was conveniently located only 10 minutes from Melbourne airport.

The Monday dinner proved to be a lot of fun, with the winners of the Share Your Pryda Moment receiving their prizes (see article on page 4) and everyone having a lot of laughs at the Pryda casino. The 5 star meals and beverages also had everyone in good spirits.

Presentations

You may have noticed there was a structure to the way we presented the topics. First, we took a step back in time and learnt about the origins of the Australian and New Zealand timber truss and frame industry and how Pryda was able to be a key supplier. In New Zealand we were lucky enough to hear from our 92 year old founder Ray Turner. While in Australia, 3 key staff critical to our success, Chris Rogers, Graham Cooper and Alan Kearon discussed the origins of Pryda. A key learning that was as critical back then as it is today; stay close to your customer to ensure that your product and service offer remains relevant. This theme was then expanded upon in the following presentations.

Simon Healey’s (Pryda Marketing Manager) market analysis presentation highlighted that the data is indicating that there is a trend towards more construction of attached dwellings. He then highlighted key considerations and opportunities. Next, Ella Bennett (Pryda Business Development Manager) presented the results of the three major market research projects that we have conducted over the last year; and the initiatives that Pryda are developing to assist Pryda fabricators to take advantage of the opportunities that were identified in the research.

The next three topics presented Pryda’s initiatives to help customers address the core Frame and Truss market. Afzal Laphir (Pryda Engineering Manager) – Australia, and Jeremy Rijk (Fabricator Account Manager) – NZ, presented the results of the quality audit and the assistance we can provide in implementing a quality assurance program for Pryda Fabricators. Steph Whiteside (Databuild Product Manager), Greg Hay (Pryda Build Product Manager) – Australia, Miriam Hickson (Fabricator Account Manager) – NZ, and Mike Connell (Pryda Software Development Manager) then presented the software development plan and initiatives. Again the plan and recent initiatives have been based on feedback from the market. Our approach is “we develop the software with you, not just for you.” The final topic by presented by Steve Priestley (Fabrication Sales Manager – ANZ) and Ian Ashby (Pryda Queensland & Victoria State Manager) – Australia, and Paul Gaiardo (Pryda General Manager) – NZ, highlighted initiatives to make a detailing office more efficient. We addressed efficiency measures, training, IT infrastructure and how we are structuring our business to assist Pryda Fabricators to grow.

To view these presentations and conference photos please go to the licensee login section on the Pryda website www.pryda.com.au. If you do not have your log in details please contact: Australia - Michelle Twite on 1800 810 741 or [email protected]; NZ - Russell Cullen on 021 790 938 or [email protected]

Many fabricators commented that apart from learning about the new initiatives, the conference presented an excellent opportunity to catch up with their colleagues from the industry.

For those that attended, thank you for being part of the Pryda 2014 conference and helping us celebrate our 50th birthday. We hope that you found the conference informative, worthwhile and most of all, a lot of fun.

A climb to the top !

Fabricators and Pryda staff attending the 2014 Pryda Fabricators Conference in Auckland were offered the opportunity to do the Harbour Bridge Walk. Eight brave souls accepted and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. Two adrenalin junkies, Gary Fowell and Dave Burke, also took the chance to do a bungy jump as part of the walk. We are happy to report that they both survived.

Probably the highlight for most, except the two bungy jumpers, was viewing the amount of vertical movement of the bridge. Because of low traffic flows during our walk we saw a movement of around 450mm but during peak traffic the bridge moves up to 950mm!

Bridge Walkers L to R:

Robert Turner (Pryda), Jeremy Rijk (Pryda), Russell Cullen (Pryda), Gary Fowell (Eastern Bay Truss & Prenail, Whakatane), Marina Fowell (Eastern Bay Truss & Prenail, Whakatane), Jarrad Cossey (Acorn ITM, Hamilton), Neville Smith (Total ITM, Hastings), Dave Burke (Acorn ITM, Hamilton).

Best Overall Entry: Steve Bayard – Prenail Frames & Trusses New Zealand.

Best Customer Entry: Denyse McNamara – B & J McNamara NSW

ADNZ Conference 2014

The annual Architectural Designers of New Zealand (ADNZ) was this year held on the grounds where the birth of our nation was signed. The Copthorne Hotel Bay of Islands located on the shoreline at Waitangi was the base for the 3 day conference. Delegate numbers were down on previous conferences which reflected the busy state of our building industry so members could not afford the time to attend.

The Kiwibank 2014 New Zealander of the Year, Dr Lance O’Sullivan, was the Key Note Speaker and entertained everyone as he spoke about his journey from childhood to where he is today. The International Key Note Speaker was Professor Mark Burry who spoke about the work done towards the completion of Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia, the large Roman Catholic Church in Barcelona and the most visited monument in Spain. Another popular workshop / site visit was An Overview of Waitangi presentation by ADNZ members Ian Butt & Grant Harris which was followed by a site visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

A number of sponsors were represented in the Expo area including Pryda. Miriam Hickson and Russell Cullen attended on behalf of Pryda.

Mitre 10 MEGA Hamilton’s ladies night

Approximately 600 ladies attended the annual Mitre10 MEGA Hamilton’s Ladies Night. The queues were starting to form outside at 5.15pm despite the doors not opening until 6.30pm such is the popularity of the night.

The ladies were invited to participate in a mixture of fun activities and product demonstrations. Free product and plenty of prizes were an added attraction for the number attending.

Pryda offered the opportunity for the ladies to use a hammer to install a Pryda Fix (for shadecloth) and a MP2R5 knucklenail onto a piece of wood. Most of the ladies had seen the products but were not aware of how easy they were to install. A few commented that they were going to repair the gate that they had been asking and waiting for their husband’s to repair!

We are happy to report that no ladies went home with bruised thumbs.

Russell Cullen (Pryda) shares the excitement with Kerry Jones and Ally

Jones, two of the 600 ladies attending the Mitre10 MEGA Hamilton Ladies

Night.

Above: The Pryda stand at the 2014 Frame Australia Conference

included a display created from a floor cassette system.

Pryda Floor Cassette offer eases Fabricator adoption

2014 has seen floor cassettes gain a lot of momentum as their time saving potential has begun to be recognised by builders across the country. Throughout the year Pryda has been working closely with a number of fabricators, helping them to introduce floor cassettes into their product offering.

Suitable for subfloor or upper storey applications, timber floor cassettes combine all the elements of a floor system including trusses, strongbacks and flooring material, into a large but manageable panel which can be lifted into place to form a complete working platform in a matter of hours.

Pryda’s floor cassette offer is supported with design software, new products and support services, all designed to ease their adoption into the fabricators’ product portfolio.

Developments in the Pryda Build software now means that cassettes can be easily detailed, minimising the amount of additional work over and above standard truss detailing. This was seen at Drouin West Timber and Truss who initially began detailing floor cassettes before cassette functionality was available, and therefore needed to use workarounds and different packages to manage the design process. Managing Director Peter Ward said, “Pryda Build V4 allows the user to complete the whole floor cassette design in one program and has saved hours”.

The product offer around floor cassettes incorporates both new products developed by Pryda specifically for the floor cassette systems and a strategic alliance with Surefoot, a concrete free foundation system. In removing concrete from site, Surefoot combined with Pryda floor cassettes is a truly unique time saving solution. This capability was recognised by Edwin McClean, of Modular Building Solutions in WA who completed their first subfloor cassette project in combination with Surefoot earlier this year. When asked why he had decided to introduce cassettes into his offer Edwin said, “My main reason for trialling floor cassettes and Surefoot was based on innovation and having a go at bringing something new into the market place. I saw the speed and efficiency of construction as a major selling point to builders.”

Other products in the offer will include a cassette lifting bracket which has been designed as a cost effective

alternative to lifting straps or lifting bolts. The brackets are compatible with standard lifting clutches and are installed into every cassette during fabrication with minimal damage to the floor sheeting – minimising costly post installation rework. The brackets are scheduled to be independently tested and certified, enabling detailed information to be provided to supervisors or health and safety managers on site prior to installation.

The final part of the floor cassette offer is customer support in the form of both engineering and marketing advice. This includes reviewing designs and details and also supporting Pryda fabricators on joint visits to targeted builders and engineers. Mark Conlan of Emcee Truss & Frame in Warnambool has been taking advantage of the Pryda support during his first few cassette projects. Mark said, “Pryda’s support so far has been fantastic. I’ve been provided with technical assistance and training with how the system works as well as help with promotion in my region.”

Another fabricator making the most of the cassette offer is Bretts Frame & Truss in Queensland who are preparing to deliver their first cassette project after working closely with Pryda for over a year to ensure a successful launch to the market. Danny Lake, General Manager said, “Floor cassettes will complete our manufacturing offer and our customers can’t get the system soon enough. Pryda has helped with the software programme, engineering support as well as the promotional presentations to our customers.”

With the complete offer in place and Pryda fabricators across the country now manufacturing or preparing to manufacture, Pryda is looking forward to an even more successful year for floor cassettes in 2015.

If you would like to know more about the Pryda floor cassette offer please contact Ella Bennett at Pryda on 1800 810 741 or email [email protected].

I am excited to take on the role as Pryda New Zealand’s National Sales Manager – Fabrication. The position will see me assume the responsibility for the fabrication channel of the Pryda business in both the north and south islands.

My working life to date has seen me hold a number of roles within the frame and truss industry in both Australia and the United Kingdom. These have included estimating & detailing, production, managing frame and truss plants and my current Pryda role as NSW State Manager. I’m keen to share my knowledge and experiences with our New Zealand fabricator base as well as expand on my own knowledge and experience.

As a family, we plan to arrive in New Zealand mid January and will be living on the north side of Auckland. With a love for fishing and golf I can’t wait to hit some new courses and chase one of those legendry snapper I keep hearing about.

So the family and I are off to New Zealand. What does that mean for NSW? In short I have to say farewell to some fantastic people. Over the past seven and half years I’ve been fortunate to work with a great bunch that includes both my Pryda colleagues and our customers. I’d like to thank everybody for their support and the many memories created over the years. It’s been an absolute pleasure to be part of the NSW team and with Nick Barnes assuming the responsibility as NSW State Manager I know everybody is in safe hands.

Although I have met a number of Pryda New Zealand fabricators at the recent conference and at their plants over the past month, I’m looking forward to learning more about their businesses early next year. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody and their families a happy and safe Christmas.

Jon Hill.
