EVERYONE A LEARNER EVERYONE LEARNING Spring 2 A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER It does feel odd writing an end of term newsletter after the students have only been back in full time education for four weeks. Although the school remained open throughout lockdown for vulnerable students and children of key workers, and as a staff we remained incredibly busy during this time, it does feel only a short time to have our students back with us. In this newsletter I want to just spend some time updating you on a few changes at Abbot Beyne School that have happened or are about to happen. I would like to thank Helen Perry, Head of Year 9, who is leaving us at Easter to further her career as a Head of Year at another school. I want to thank her on your behalf and that of the students for the hard work, dedication and effort she has put into her role. I would also like to welcome Mike McHugh-Hicks who starts with us after Easter as Head of Key Stage 3. Bromcom - We continue to move forward with the change to our communication system with parents and students. This will be in place for the first week back after Easter. Parents will be able to see positive and negative behaviour points, timetables, attendance and reports. Our School Values - Having spent a term reviewing the school I felt that a number of systems overlapped at the school. We had ETRIC, LORIC and The 3Rs that all gave similar messages and had similar meanings. Following on from a staff consultation we have reviewed this and come up with Our Values that cover both behaviour and learning. I have shared these with students in assembly this week and they will form part of the work we do in school ensuring students are fully prepared for life when they leave school. A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

It does feel odd writing an end of term newsletter after the students have only been back in full time education for four weeks.

Reminder of the new school behaviour policy

We are taking the parts of the behaviour policy that work well and adapting them after Easter. The main changes are that positive and negative behaviour will be cumulative as opposed to one off events. Students will receive a fresh start after every incident but we have devised a system to pick up low level behaviours to improve learning and teaching. I have launched this in assemblies this week with students across the school. 10 week blocks

Positive behaviour points will run continuously throughout the year. Students will receive rewards for the number of positive points gained throughout the year. All behaviour points will be monitored closely by staff and can be seen by students and parents / carers on the Bromcom app. At the end of every 10 weeks a number of positive behaviour points will be allocated based on behaviours throughout the block.

Negative points will be given to students who do not comply with the behaviour expectations outlined by Our Values. The school will apply a graduated approach to the number of points accrued in a 10 week block (four blocks in each academic year). The negative behaviour points will be reset at the start of each block, thus allowing for a fresh start for the students.

Removal from lessons: LOLO system

Initially a student in a lesson will be warned for displaying inappropriate behaviour and given guidance on how to modify their behaviour to get their learning back on track. This will now be logged on Bromcom as a warning. If such behaviour continues then the student may be removed from the classroom (LOLO) for the remainder of the lesson. For each LOLO there is a further sanction for the student, depending on their previous number of LOLOs. LOLOs follow the same 10 week block structure as behaviour points. For every LOLO there is a restorative conversation completed with the teacher and the teacher phones home.

Much of this information has been sent to parents before in my weekly email and all of it will be available on our new school website after Easter.

I wish you a wonderful and relaxing Easter break and do enjoy the opportunity to catch up with friends and family safely outdoors. Jamie Tickle

STEM NEWS

The Big Bang Digital is back for 2021, bigger and better than last year. Aimed at students aged 11 to 14, the event will take place over 3 days from Wednesday 23rd June to Friday 25th June. It will feature a mix of live and pre-recorded sessions around the theme of building a brighter and greener future through STEM. The sessions will have interactive elements that students can dip into throughout the school day. This academic year, we will be making the most of the brilliant digital platforms created by talented engineers to ensure whatever the world throws at us, we can still offer some unique Bing Bang experiences. The Big Bang Competition will be open for entries early next year and the Big Bang Fair will be back in 2022. For further information please visit https://competition.thebigbangfair.co.uk/

TINKERCAD

TinkerCAD is used in Technology lessons so that students can learn how to use Computer Aided Design. These are some examples of where students have taken their own designs a step further and used their own creative talents. In class students go onto create their own designs using the 3D printer.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

The photographs below show just how creative our Year 8 students were during

lockdown. We are very proud in The Technology Department of our students who go

that extra mile to ‘make’ products including some delicious looking food products

independently and we appreciate that it is not easy to do at home.

PEN PAL PROJECT

To help with easing the isolation and loneliness of Winshill’s older citizens, a kind group of Year 7 students have started writing to the residents of Elizabeth Court. Each student now has their own Pen Pal and letters are eagerly starting to pass back and forth between the participants. Topics that have proved popular so far are school days, families, hobbies and pets. It is remarkable how well the residents remember their school days and their letter writing skills are extremely accurate (this English Teacher very much approves of their use of language and structure). The letter pictured below is from a 96 year old lady who has worked out that she 8 times Bella’s age! She also wants Bella to know that she is fully independent and lives in sheltered accommodation, NOT a care home! If Covid-19 restrictions allow, our young writers have been invited to Elizabeth Court at Christmas for tea, cakes and a face-to-face meeting. Let’s hope that this becomes possible. If you would like to be a part of this worthwhile project, then please let your English Teacher or Mrs Ballinger know.
