Virtual 9th IOC attracts participants worldwide

I

m humbled and honored to communicate with colleagues, on behalf of the 2020-25 WFO Executive Committee. This year has

been trying for everyone. From natural calamities to the pandemic and economic slowdowns…for those who thought they had seen it all, surprises were in store!

As the year comes to an end, hopes of an upturn bring optimism to our hearts. What does this augur for the profession and for the “World Federation of Orthodontists?”

While business pundits might conclude that “slowbalisation” is the new “globalisation,” the year has provided us with an opportunity to reflect

upon some existing trends and systems that can be modified and augmented, to facilitate greater collaborations. The 9th IOC, hosted

virtually, was a classic case in point. The meeting had attendees from around the globe, many of whom would have probably found it difficult to travel to Yokohama for logistical reasons. The lectures could be viewed from the comfort of one’s home/office and were available online for over a month.

We witnessed an online technological marvel that integrated science and fraternal interaction in the best manner possible! Over 130 world class experts delivering lectures that are a true treasure trove of educational resources. While a lot has changed over the past year, the endless possibilities brought about by the various digital platforms really augur well for a global organization like the WFO, where fraternal interaction can occur without boundaries and travel restrictions.

rganizers of the 9th International Orthodontic Congress (IOC) transformed the meeting that had been planned in Yokohama

to a virtual event that took place October 4-6, 2020, when the live meeting had been expected to occur. Access to the meeting was provided for the following month, allowing members from around the world an opportunity to see any of the speakers and/or view the poster board presentations.

The virtual IOC encompassed a variety of world-class educational opportunities, including more than 100 lectures by renowned experts on orthodontic clinical and scientific topics. Dr. Allan R. Thom, president of the WFO for 2015-20, presided over the virtual IOC.

As originally planned, the IOC took place in conjunction with the 12th Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society (APOS) Conference and the 79th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthodontic Society.

WFO News to Know

Nearly 6,300 registrants worldwide viewed the IOC lectures and events as the pre-recorded sessions were released during the meeting, and/or downloaded lecture files while they remained available to registrants through November 3. More than 4,700 of the registrants were WFO Fellows representing every region of the world.

Remaining participants included Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society Fellows, non-WFO member orthodontists, students (including orthodontic residents and undergraduates), allied health professionals and special invitees.

“The unexpected pandemic of COVID-19 caused never-seen-before disasters and totally changed the world just a few months prior to the IOC,” said Dr. Keiji Moriyama, president of the IOC host organization, the Japanese Orthodontic Society. “After dozens of Zoom meetings, we made a challenging decision to completely reformat the congress from ‘physical’ to ‘virtual’ within a very limited time frame. To us, this seemed like a “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.” We were nonetheless fortunate enough to be blessed with the goodwill of more than 100 invited speakers who could generously contribute to the scientific program on a voluntary basis.

“The congress was also energized by a poster session, a resident forum, the orthodontic boards symposium, and exhibition by more than 40 companies,” added Dr. Moriyama. “I, on behalf of all the

members of the JOS, would like to extend our special thankfulness to all the WFO members who provided cooperation and support for the 9th IOC.”

“The organizing committee of the 9th IOC would also like to express our gratitude to all of the WFO Fellows who supported the virtual meeting,” said Dr. Takashi Ono, chairman of the 9th IOC as well as the 12th Asian Pacific Orthodontic Congress and the 79th meeting of the Japanese Orthodontic Society. “The event was very successful and we had a large number of delegates from around the world learning together virtually. This would never have happened without your help. Once again, thank you so much and we look forward to seeing you soon in person at future meetings.”

The 9th IOC Opening Ceremonies and Closing Ceremonies may be viewed on the WFO YouTube Channel.

“The WFO also extends our sincere gratitude to each of the 9th IOC speakers, both for providing world-class lectures and for their patience and flexibility in working with us when the meeting transitioned to a virtual format,” said Dr. Nikhilesh R. Vaid, incoming president of the WFO. t

The success of this event has inspired us to further strengthen the digital resources of the WFO. Integrated online learning platforms as well as a “Global Educators Forum” are new projects that you will hear of soon. The WFO’s Communication Committee, headed by Drs. Panagiotis Skoularikis and Bryce Lee, is considering digital tools that can add more value to your WFO membership.

Member resources and digital tools for WFO fellows to promote the specialty are being prepared and should be available soon.

The newly constituted SOSCB (Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certification Boards) has begun to contact national and regional boards for preliminary meetings. If you are a chair of a National Orthodontic Board, please watch your in-box for emails from the WFO office. You may also contact Dr. Valmy Kulbersh, the chair of the SOSCB.

The Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists is now indexed on Medline – a long-standing wish of our fellows and potential authors. The citations and the metrics of the journal are ever-increasing. We invite WFO fellows to utilize your free subscription by accessing the site www.jwfo.org – this is a benefit of your fellowship. The Executive Committee would also like to encourage submission of original research articles to the JWFO.

The WFO is not just an office located at St Louis, Missouri, USA. It is a collective symbol of the aspirations and the spirit of the specialty of orthodontics, globally. We encourage leaders of national and regional orthodontic associations to invite all specialist orthodontists in their respective countries to be WFO fellows and be a part of the largest global network of orthodontists.

The WFO fellowship is a global passport that symbolizes “quality orthodontic care” of the highest order. The Federation has made efforts to reach out to its affiliate associations/societies for “customized fellowship plans” for signing up all of their members as WFO fellows. The Taiwan Association of Orthodontists is the first society globally in which every member is a WFO fellow. The WFO leadership truly appreciates this initiative by the TAO leadership.

If you are a president of a national society and want to discuss customized WFO fellowship plans for your members, please do reach out to us.

This issue of the WFO Gazette introduces you to your WFO Executive Committee for 2020-25. We strongly encourage you to get in touch with your regional representative. The WFO represents all of us around the world, and we would like every voice heard.

As we await a life that will allow travel and in person interactions, we are committed to implementing new life lessons learnt in the year 2020, as individuals, as a federation and as a specialty! Thank you for being part of the WFO.

Dr. Vaid became president of the WFO at the conclusion of the

9th International Orthodontic Congress on October 7. He is in

orthodontic practice in Mumbai, India, where he is a consultant

and director at Only Orthodontics. He is also a professor and the

vice dean at the European University Dental College in Dubai. As a

member of the WFO Executive Committee for 2015-20, Dr. Vaid served

as chairman of the WFO Board Certifications Committee and of the

Promotions Committee. He also completed his term as president of

the Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society, which ended in 2016. t

Dr. Lee Graber receives WFO DeKock Award

JWFO special article highlights WFO history and anniversary

D

r. Lee W. Graber, secretary general of the WFO, received the 2020 William H. DeKock Distinguished Service Award,

the highest award presented by the WFO, during the virtual 9th International Orthodontic Congress (October 4-6).

Dr. Graber practices in an orthodontic practice in suburban Chicago, Illinois, USA, which was started by his father 75 years ago. He has spent years engaged in leadership of the WFO since he served as the organization’s first vice president following its establishment in 1995. He was president of the WFO from 2000-2005.

In addition, Dr. Graber has provided leadership for the American Association of Orthodontists, serving as AAO president for 2010-11. He has served on the editorial boards of multiple journals and has contributed to clinical and research literature – in particular, having served as co-editor and co-author of Orthodontics: Current Principles

and Techniques, now in its 6th edition.

Dr. Graber received his DDS, MS and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan and completed the orthodontic residency program at Northwestern University. He expressed his appreciation for the DeKock Award during the opening ceremonies of the 9th IOC, saying:

“I humbly accept this award on behalf of all those with whom I worked and shared in the achievements of the WFO for over 25 years: For my mentor and this award’s namesake, Bill DeKock; for my colleagues at the American Association of Orthodontists and Midwestern Society of Orthodontists who have allowed me to represent them; for the organization staff members, my practice

colleagues and team members; and for the five WFO Executive Committees as well as international academic and association leaders.”

“Of course, special recognition goes to my family, starting with my exemplary parents: A father who loved this specialty and shared with my mother an appreciation of high quality contributions, no matter from where in the world they were sourced. Most of all, this recognition goes to my ever-supportive wife Jane, and our three daughters, Megan, Molly and my practice partner Katie. They have carried the home and office loads while I was permitted to be absent, blessed to work on the noble objectives of this organization. This award is for ALL of you. Thank you!” t

I

n-person events planned to celebrate the WFO Silver Jubilee (25th anniversary) this year unfortunately had to be cancelled because

of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Journal of the World Federation of

Orthodontists (JWFO), however, marked the occasion with a special Jubilee issue in October.

The introductory article in the edition, authored by Drs. Allan R. Thom, Lee W. Graber, Amanda Maplethorp and Nikhilesh R. Vaid, reviews the history of the organization. Beginning with an overview of the early International Orthodontic Congress meetings and the development of the idea for a worldwide orthodontic organization, the article describes the WFO’s establishment in 1995 in San Francisco during the 4th International Orthodontic Congress and the 95th American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session.

Sixty-nine organizations representing 62 countries signed the WFO charter, launching the organization with Dr. William H. DeKock as president and Dr. Lee W. Graber as vice-president. The JWFO article also examines the WFO’s growth, evolution and implementation of initiatives to support and promote quality orthodontic care worldwide.

The JWFO is available online and access to the journal is a benefit of membership in the WFO. This journal is published four times per year and provides peer-reviewed information for clinicians with current and past issues available 24/7.

As a Medline indexed journal, the JWFO also provides an opportunity for authors. Use the link below to view the article, “World Federation of Orthodontists: An orthodontic umbrella organization coordinating activities and pooling resources.” t
