For the very first time our magic theme was “Magic Book Report”. Your humble President facilitated and started the discussion by performing the effect, The Upside Down Deck from “Scarne on Card Tricks”. Unfortunately, my magical interlude didn’t quite go as rehearsed but I promise to perform the effect again at an upcoming meeting to redeem myself. Next up was Larry Wright who espoused the virtues of “The Magic Handbook” by Peter Elden and performed and explained the Coin Escape effect. Bob Holdridge followed that with a performance of the Billiard Ball Box, which he constructed himself. The plans and effect came from his favorite book “Blackstone’s Modern Card Tricks And Secrets of Magic” by Harry Blackstone. Finally Jerry Barrilleaux talked about and performed a miracle from the pages of the “Magic Book” by Harry Lorrayne. After the lecture and short break the club presented Bll Hatteroth and Chris Herren with their trophies for winning last year’s magic close up and stage competitions. Once all the club business was taken care of we commenced with the general magic performance. By my count we had nine different members performing to the delight and amazement of the audience. It was great to see so many people eager to participate. I hope you’re all planning to attend this month’s meeting on Wednesday, April 18 when we will have another first time magic theme. This one were calling…. wait for it.. “April Fools! So dust of your die box or whatever else your favorite “sucker“ effect may be and come ready to fool and entertain your fellow club members. Our May meeting lecture will feature the classic effect “Cups and Balls” Michael McGriff has kindly volunteered to put together some fine material so I know you won’t want to miss that. For all members who still have not paid your dues I urge you to do so now. You have been dropped from the official roster and I don’t want to see you go. The vitality of our club depends on its members so we need to keep our club going strong. SAM 112 is one of the best magic clubs in the bay area and I want you to be an integral part of our success. So pay those dues today! See you all at the meeting.

  • Meeting Report OK– Now here is a problem! I have been

told that the meeting report is a favorite feature of thisnewsletter. For years, Bill Marquardt did the write-up ofthe meetings and your editor just pasted in some photosand you had your favorite article right there. Bill retiredfrom his position of scribe. Here’s how that affects

I did take a few pictures. The theme was “My Favorite Book.”There were at least four books… I brought, The MagicHandbook by Peter Eldin. This book is available fromAmazon and elsewhere on the internet. It is an excellent basicmagic book with outstanding illustration. It incorporatessomething of the history of magic with the effects included inthe book. I demonstrated a coin through handkerchief effectfrom the book.

Bob Holdridge brought, Blackstone's Modern Card Tricksand Secrets of Magic by Harry Blackstone dated 1941. Hedemonstrated The Billiard Ball Box which he made frominstructions in that book. I know this because Bob told me inan email on another subject and because I took a picture of thetitle page during the meeting.

Jerry had The Magic Book by Harry Lorayne. I’m not surewhat he showed from the book. Why, because nobody wroteup the meeting. Mark Richardson had Scarne on Cards. Youknew that if you read the President’s Column on page one.
