At Burks Elementary, we Expect Excellence with No Excuses! November 2012 A Message From Your Principal It's hard to believe we are already to November and the holiday season is upon us. As the weather begins to change and the hours of daylight decrease, it will be more important than ever to keep the focus on being prepared for learning at school. Please ensure that your child gets at least 8 hours of sleep each night and that they get up and have a morning routine that prepares them for the day including brushing their teeth, dressing in appropriate clothing and getting their homework in their backpacks. Getting to school on time is not only important, it's the law. School starts at 8:00 and children are considered tardy if they are not in their classrooms when the school bell rings. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it fuels the brain and body for the hours of learning and playing during the day. Burks serves breakfast to every student in the morning and students need to be to school no later than 7:50 in order to be served breakfast and have time to eat before school begins. I appreciate working in partnership with you to help your child learn and grow to become successful citizens in our community. Counselor’s Corner

This month our Burks Eagles will be learning

about the Character Counts trait “Responsibility.”

They are learning to be responsible and accountable for their actions, recognizing

and completing their tasks, pursuing excellence, and using self- control. Parents, please think of ways that you can work on

teaching your children how to take responsibility at home. Together we will grow incredibly responsible young adults!

“If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some

responsibility on their shoulders.” – Abigail Van Buren

Burks Healthy Zone

Nutrition Bite

Are you having trouble getting your children to make healthy choices? Researchers at Cornell University have found that cartoon

characters can help. Students in a study were shown pictures of admirable and less

admirable cartoon characters and asked whether the character would be more likely to select a healthy or unhealthy food item. The researchers determined that the children chose healthier lunch items on days that they were presented with the cartoon character question.

Next time you are having trouble getting your child to select a healthy option, ask them which item they believe a positive cartoon

character or role model would choose – at long last, they may begin to choose the better

option.

Burks CHAMPS Ask your child about our

school-wide behavior expectations! There are specific expectations for

every area of our building as well as in the classroom. We have been teaching

and practicing these expectations since the first day of school. We expect students to behave like CHAMPS at Burks Elementary!

Family Problem Solving

Challenge Groups of campers were going to an island. On the 1st day, 10 went over

and 2 came back. On the 2nd day, 12 went

over and 3 came back. If this

pattern continues, how many campers would have visited the island at the

end of a week? How many would be left on the island at the end of the week?

Turn your answers in

to the office for a special prize!

Problem Solving

Problem solving is what you do when you don’t know what to do. We learn to be good problem

solvers by learning how to solve problems. This is extremely important for student success in

Mathematics. Problem solving in Math provides students with a context for learning

mathematical concepts and skills, is a vehicle for developing high level thinking skills and helps

students develop true conceptual understanding. Research indicates that students either rush

through Math problems because they do not fully understand them or they simply stare at the

paper and eventually make an uneducated guess at an answer due to lack of understanding or lack

of problem solving strategies. A process that all students at Burks are involved in during Math

instruction is called UPS Check. This process gives our students a way of thinking through problems

to come up with the best possible solution. Ask your child about UPS Check!

Juntos podemos educar a unos jovencitos responsables.

Aprendemos a resolver problemas aprendiendo a resolverlos.
