WSQG Elected Officersand AppointeesJennifer P. Golden, President

My first newsletter note is to all of the WSQG members…thank you for the support and encouragement you haveshown to each other and to me in the fine art of quilting andbeing a positive example to the new quilters in ourcommunity, after all our “mission” is to unite those who lovethe quilters art, to preserve the heritage of quilting and be asource of education. I think the central committee did a

fantastic job fulfilling our mission at Quilt Wyoming 2018! Thank you for all thehard work you put in for us to have such a good time!

As I write this note my heart is especially happy…In the last 12 days I have gottento experience several things that make my heart sing…quilting with friends, oldand new, being with family, and riding my motorcycle with my geriatric gang. These things are the things that make me happy and I wish for all of you to findthose things that make you happy and that you take the time to do those things.

I hope to see many of you at the events throughout the state this year…please lookat the events listed in Patchwords and on the website…there are many to choosefrom and at least one will be close to you!

State Fair is coming up on August 15-18 in Douglas and is a wonderful venue todisplay your quilting art. I hope to see many entries this year…WSQG sponsorsseveral awards each year, maybe you will take one home. Jennifer P. Golden

Reminiscing . . .Disconnected moments scroll throughmy mind—storybooks with tales ofpioneer girls making quilts; mother witha sewing machine that I couldn’t usebecause my feet were not long enoughto reach the floor pedal. I grew. My feettouched. I made clothes, not quilts.

I married, bought a simple sewingmachine; and one fateful day around1972, I met Her in a fabric shop. Her—a chance encounter with a stranger. Thethudding bolt flipped as yards of fabricwere measured. “Curtains?” I asked.“Quilt back,” she answered. “Ooh,” Iresponded, “I’m going to make quiltswhen I retire.” She fixed me with astare, “Honey, if you’re going to makequilts, you get to making them. You gotno guarantee of your eyes.”

That day I became a quilter. I boughtmuslin. The pioneer girls used muslin. Iinvested in the remains of a bolt oforange and white check polyester andheaded home to copy a bedspread in aSears catalogue. Who knew the patternwas Ohio Star? Or that a great quiltrevival was starting? Or that rotarycutters would be invented? Or that allof this would gather momentum andlead to founding the Wyoming State

Quilt Guild?

Gratitudeoverwhelmsme. Thankyou for thehonor of theGoldenThimble.

The newssent mymind backto thebackseat ofa car of quilt

friends headed from Cheyenne toRawlins to see if the Wyoming StateQuilt Guild would happen. As the milesrolled, I designed our logo—IndianPaintbrush set with Wyoming brownand gold nine patches. WSQGhappened! We forged our missionstatement and planned the firstQuiltWyoming. When I got home Idrafted our by-laws and set about to gettax-exempt status. Look at us now—21years old!

You, dear members, thrill me. Ourregional system has encouraged andenhanced quilting across the state.Every five years QuiltWyoming gatherssomewhere near you—and you come! You use WSQG quilt stands to holdlocal shows. Your county library getsquilt themed books every year. Youshop hop local shops—there’s nothinglike feeling the fabrics. You are themomentum that preserves and advancesthe beautiful art of quilting. Yourenthusiasm encourages new generationsof quilters. Be proud of yourselves.

Now, 46 years since I cut Ohio Starblocks with scissors, my family hasquilts—bed quilts and wall quilts. Those 46 years have broughtunimaginable changes. Think of thesewing machines and tools we use.Consider the fabrics and techniques. Ofcourse, it’s not a quilt until its quilted.By hand is cherished, but new machinesand free motion have revolutionized theprocess. All of this is wonderful. Yet,the true heart of quilting beats in eachof us—friendship. We may not sitaround large frames as our foremothersdid, but friendship and caring pulse inour hearts. They are the life blood ofWSQG.

Blessings, friends. Eva Knight

Memories from Eva Knight

We were notifiedthis month thatFounding Member,Marianna Edgarpassed away oneyear ago on July 20,2017.

Although we would have liked to havereported her death sooner, we nonethelessfeel saddened losing a founding member, friend and fellow quilter.

She learned to sew from her mother andmade clothes for her two daughters. Afterher daughters left the nest, Mariannaresponded to a flyer in a fabric shop andsigned up to take a quilting class in 1991.She was hooked. She made many quiltingfriends, including those in the CheyenneHeritage Quilters where she served asPresident in 1997.

Her husband was injured in a car accidentin 2007 so she spent much of her timecaring for him. Even though she could nolonger attend as many quilting activitiesshe continued to sew with several closefriends on a regular basis.

MARIANNA EDGAR

Marianna, Thank you for joining thoseWyoming quilters who had a vision for thestate quilt guild. Most of these ladiescontinue to be active in the Wyoming StateQuilt Guild

Quilt Wyoming 2018 Quilt Camp

The Board voted and approved to have Quilt Camp as a class during Quilt Wyoming for the first time this year. Participantswere required to be new quilters. They were not required to pay registration or class fees and received a kit to construct a quilt.Quilt Wyoming committee members Mo Young and Wendy Shipley volunteered to organize and teach the quilt camp. Theirhard work paid off. Nine quilters finished their quilts! We hope this experiment results in a continuing Quilt Camp class atfuture Quilt Wyomings to introduce the quilter's art to new quilters ages 11-99. If members of a guild or a group of volunteershelps teach for a couple hours each, then it will not cause the volunteers to miss too much of Quilt Wyoming.

'Hope your summer is going well, and ifyou are a summer quilter that you aremaking good progress! The big quiltingthat I normally do in summer is theannual convention. I had a great time

there again. Thank you to the Central Region for providinggood teachers and classrooms, good food, and a good QuiltCamp experience at Quilt Wyoming. Congratulations to Eva forwinning the challenge quilt contest, Roamer category, as well asthe Golden Thimble Award. I look forward to the inspirationthat you continue to provide.

My personal schedule has been very hectic this spring and earlysummer. I hope to have a chance to stay home a bit more tohelp me focus on my ongoing attempt to manage my “stashpile”. I took a bit of time off from that project to finish a quiltthat was a wedding gift for my God Daughter – thank youJennifer Golden for quilting it – it was very well received! Istarted a baby quilt at Quilt Wyoming that will need someattention in the next few weeks to get it completed. That didprovide leverage to use some smaller pieces of the stash. Thenit will be full focus on the garden and haying activities that bookup my late summer.

I hope to have an entry in the Northeast Wyoming Quilt showwhich will be October 6 and 7 at the Gillette CamPlex EnergyHall. They hung more than 370 quilts last year. It would bewonderful if we could enjoy even more quilts this year! Pleaseconsider entering a quilt or quilted object. Plan to come and seeall of the entries.

ET Quilts in Buffalo is sponsoring sewing machine serviceevery other month. August will be the next opportunity to signup for service. They are also offering a new sale room. Itemswill be added often. Come over and check out the new saleroom. If it’s been awhile since your machine was serviced, givethem a call and get on the schedule. I recently had my machineserviced and was gratified to hear it hum along nicely. Good forthe machine as well as the user to have regular service and tochange your needle often! Sherryl Buck

CENTRALJulie Haptonstall

Hi all. I’m your newly-electedRegional Director for Central! Iwould like to thank Deb Zelenakfor all the hard work that she didfor us as the RD for the Central

region for the past four years.

I just got back from Quilt Wyoming 2018. This was my firstyear serving on the planning committee. What an excitingexperience that was. I believe that everyone should serve onthe planning committee just once to see what goes on and tohelp appreciate the work involved. Quilt Camp this year wasa new class designed for students who had little to noexperience with quilting, to learn how to quilt and to possiblyleave the two-day class with a completed quilt! The studentsdid have a great time and showed some amazing quilts. Hereare a couple things happening in the Central region:

The Quilting Rendezvous retreat is almost full! There areonly five spots left. Call Deb Zelenak, (307) 438-1159 beforesending in your registration to make sure there is still room. The retreat is scheduled for September 6-9 at the Wind RiverCasino in Riverton. This regional event is a UFO/work-on-your-own-project retreat with a short mystery class taught byJennifer Golden. Only two coordinating fat quarters and azipper foot are needed for the class. The registration form canbe found on page 10 and on the website. Send in yourreservation to hold your spot. Space is limited.

Stitches N Time from Sonia CottrellSummer is half over and I haven’t finished the projects I hadplanned to finish. Now I have a new project I want tocontinue working from Quilt Wyoming 2018. It’s theclothesline basket that was taught by our English speakingpresenter, Catherine Redford. It was a very enjoyable classand there were many steps to learn. I will be thinking aboutteaching this project to our Stitches N Time group in Douglas.

For the past two years, our group has been making CheckbookCovers for QW2018. Our goal was to make 200. We made196, which was the exact number of registered quilters. If youpicked one up on Friday evening at dinner, you can thank ourgroup of devoted quilters. At last I must tell you about anexciting thing that happened to me at Quilt Wyoming 2018. Iwon one of the $200 scholarships for QW2019. Thank youQW2018!

Reviewing what we have done at Stitches N Time on the firstSaturday of each month: In June we did another wall hangingwith a watering can full of flowers appliquéd onto a light

colored background fabric, then surrounded by squares at thetop and pinwheels at the bottom.

In July we worked on a red, white and blue Hunter Star tablerunner. Some quilters chose to make three blocks to put longways, some chose to do a square table runner and I chose toput two side by side and eight down. Theywere all very striking with the bright redsand blues. This one was made by DeannaLindeman.

In August we are going to work on ArtQuilts by using our scraps of colorfulblues for a beach scene, oranges, yellowsand browns for a fall scene, greens, pinksand purples for a spring scene, or whiteand grays for a winter scene. These willthen be sewn with appropriate embellishments that enhancethe look of the scene.

At Glendo EWC Quilting (Eastern Wyoming College) wehave been meeting every Thursday this summer at the GlendoTown Hall. We have been doing the same projects as theStitches N Time Guild in Douglas except for the Crown RoyalQuilts that Sonia, Tami, and Mary have been working on. Wechose to do the traditional pattern. They turned outbeautifully. I will put a picture in next issue as they are at thequilters now. Mary and I will each be working on a freedomcharity quilt for HeartSong Quilt Store inHot Springs, SouthDakota Tami Gentryand Sue Tuck workedon these purses.Sonia

The Prairie Stitcher from Tammy Townsend'Hope you all had a wonderful time at state. I've heard greatstuff from many people. Be sure to stop by with your couponfrom the Prairie Stitcher by August 31st to redeem.

We will have several classes and store happenings this fall. Idon't have dates yet but will soon. Classes will includeBeginning and Intermediate Quilting, a table runner, a verycute Christmas tree wall hanging, kids sewing and more. Asalways Sagebrush Sisters meet the 2nd Wednesday of eachmonth at 7:00 p.m. as well as open sew on Mondayafternoons. Open sew is free. Come and join the fun.

We can still cut kits for Ribbon Rainbow and Christmas Cheerblock of the month but will run out of fabrics soon so orderyours now. Both are just beautiful.

Kalico Kat Quilt Shop from Sandie SwansonI had great fun vending for the first time at Quilt Wyoming. I sawquilting friends, who I haven't seen in many years. That made theexperience fabulous. I want to thank everyone who visited mybooth. Mostly, I want to thank the Central region for doing a greatjob. I know the work that goes into this. I am hoping to participatein years ahead. Everything is back in its place at The Kalico Kat.We are having fun with Row x Row and Shop Hop visitors.September will bring us to Torrington, for the Quilts Along thePlatte Quilt Show and the Lander Quilt Show. Before that, going-a-quilting at the Central Region Quilting Rendezvous in Riverton....hope to see you there!!!

Never Sweat Needlers from Eileen GroveRight now we're really busy preparing for our big Quilt Show onAugust 10-12, 2018. We're expecting to have at least 150quilts to be displayed, as well as the Cowboy Auction (20 variousthemed baskets), our Boutique, six vendors (including sewingmachine service), food available for workers and vendors, and theraffle of this year's quilt, Circle of Friends, on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

On September 29th, Lickety Stitch Quilts will teach us how to makea Barn Quilt Block, 2' x 2', on a wooden base. We're lookingforward to that!

Quite a number of us are planning to attend the Quick Quilt Retreatin Cody October 24-28. We've been making our reservations toinsure a space (and a room!). It's always so much fun and we do getquite a lot of sewing done on our individual projects!

We continue to work on Quilts of Valor for our Veterans.

We've already chosen the pattern for next year's club raffle quilt, avariation of a Log Cabin Quilt, and we hope to purchase somefabrics for it at our own quilt show vendors. Then we'll cut, kit it,and pass them out to willing members to sew!

We helped out our town librarian with bright fabrics for pre-schoolers so they can make drumsticks as one of their activities.Prepare for rhythm and word rituals!

We're considering a new project for the guild. . .a birthday club or aUFO Completion challenge. Of course a new President's Challengewill also be revealed, probably in September! Eileen

Early summer is a busy time forquilters in the Southwest Region.Quilting on the Green was held onJune 1st and 2nd at the IslandPavilion in Green River. The quiltshow drew 229 attendees, which is

an increase from 2017. Eight vendors had booths at theevent and 86 quilts were displayed and judged, a few ofwhich are included in this report. In addition, 18 vintagequilts were shown, together with a treadle sewing machine, quilting frames and other vintage memorabilia.

The Trunk Show was presented by Cindy Haddick fromCindy’s Thread in Utah. She displayed and told the storiesbehind her Judy Niemeyer quilts. A variety of desserts andbeverages were served. Everyone who attended the showreceived a “goodie bag” filled with quilting books andrelated sewing/quilting items. A variety of donated itemswere raffled off.

Pamela Walsh, a certified judge from Colorado providedconstructive feedback to quilt entrants. She had positivecomments about each of the quilts judged. This year insteadof giving the standard purchased ribbons for first, second,Best of Show, Mayor’s and People choice, the center of theribbons were customized. This added a special touch for theprize winners in addition to the cash award.

The first place winners in each category were:

The Sweetwater County Quilt Guild has been very activewith one of the most recent activities being a road trip to the46th Annual Invitational Quilt Show at the Brigham City(Utah) Museum on July 18th. In addition to the quilt showand lunch, the group treated themselves to shopping at alocal quilt store.

The latest challenge for the Sweetwater County Quilt Guildmembers is to create a miniature quilt up to 160 inches inperimeter. The theme is “Cowboy” and entries much becompleted by the January meeting, after which they will bedisplayed at the Sweetwater County Museum during themonth of February, 2019. Although the guild is not holdingsummer meetings, members will have a Project Linuspresentation at their September meeting. Members are alsoplanning to bring an orphan block in a paper bag to theSeptember meeting. Each member who wants to participatewill take a bag and complete a quilt project using thatorphan block.

Members of Sweetwater Piecemakers, the Rock Springsquilt guild, are working on a guild challenge. Earlier thisyear, guild members rolled dice to determine which shape, fabric type and colors must be included in their challengeproject. Completed challenge projects will be shared at theOctober meeting. Members are also looking forward to theannual ice cream social which is always held at the Augustmeeting.

Quilt Wyoming members of the Southwest Region areplanning Quilt Wyoming 2020 which will be held in RockSprings. The theme has been chosen and the quilt has beendesigned by Nancy Vase. We are still working to finalizearrangements with Western Wyoming Community Collegeas the venue for classes, vendors, meals, trunk shows, etc.Unfortunately, Western Wyoming Community College willnot allow us to use the dorms so we will negotiatefavorable rates with a local motel for housing. Nationalteachers are being selected.

On October 5th and 6th the 7th annual Hunters’ WidowRetreat will be held in Rock Springs. Further details willbe forthcoming.

I just returned from Quilt Wyoming 2018 in Riverton. Itwas a wonderful event attended by almost 200 quilters. Iloved having two days to lose myself in classes taught byRayna Gillman, a nationally known quilt instructor who haswritten three books and specializes in improvisationalquilting. These classes definitely took me out of mycomfort zone and I learned a lot about color and value andthe use of black and white fabrics.

...Southwest continued from page 13The QW18 committee deserves a lot of credit for putting onsuch a great event. The national and regional instructorswere great and their trunk shows were amazing. The quiltshow had wonderful quilts and there was an impressivenumber of vendors. One of the best things was the food. The chef and his staff at CWCC outdid themselves and theywill be a tough act to follow. The food was so good that Iasked the chef to share his secrets regarding the pork loinroast and many other entrees.

I am excited about representing the Southwest Region andintend to reach out to quilters and guilds outside ofSweetwater County. I hope they will also reach out to meat [email protected] so that I can share their activitiesin Wyoming Patchwords. I see this as an opportunity tomake new friends and discover new ideas. We all tend toget into a rut and I know that my local guild struggles toprovide new opportunities and activities to its members. I

already have ideas to share at our next meeting because ofmy contact with other quilters as I prepared this report.

Finally, Ginny Hartman asked me to include this in myreport:

Nena James has been elected to the position for the next twoyears. I have enjoyed getting to meet so many of you in mytwo years as director, and will miss having a built-in ‘excuse’to attend regional quilting events. With Quilt Wyomingscheduled for Rock Springs in 2020, I felt that having a directorwho was located in Rock Springs would better facilitate theplanning for this every-five-years event. Nena James is the co-director for Quilt Wyoming 2020, and is willing to serve as theRegional Director as well. I am looking forward to hearingfrom her through the Patchwords articles in the days ahead.Ginny Hartman
