“When we were deciding which play should be our launch into the new Milton Rooms it was essential the community felt they had a stake in the building after years of neglect. The play had to allow for that. The building has to belong to the community. By using 180 local people and allowing my imagination to embrace this beautiful Market Place - the only play with this capacity to include all these elements was A Midsummer Nights Dream.”

Sunday 5th June 2011The Field Rehearsal

Having previously rehearsed sections in isolation, both in London and Yorkshire,we needed to find a space big enough to represent the whole of Malton's Market Place in order to bring our cast together for the first time.

We borrowed a field.

Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th June 2011 Final Rehearsals and Performance

Cast, crew and volunteers arrived at the Milton Rooms for final preparations, some people meeting for the first time in the process. Rehearsals and fittings took place all over the building, in the church and surrounding streets.

On a perfect Sunday evening, after months of rehearsing in three different parts of the country a cast of 8 professional actors, 150 local performers, a crew of 6, sixty scooters, a film crew, a team of chaperones, traffic controllers, stewards and a horse finally came together for the only performance of this community production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

A vital and extraordinary piece of theatre.
