Kilian’s top tip… (Kilian is a Flaine local).

Every resort has its secret spots, passed on from one generation to the next, much like the best blackberry picking spots… and according to Kilian, "Paulo’s corridor" is one of these. It takes 30 minutes to get there from the top of the Aup de Véran gondola lift, but the descent affords bird’s eye views of Flaine, from the Aup de Véran mountain pass down to the summit of Grand Grenier 800 metres below.

Sessions organised by Flaine's ESF French Ski School.

"Freeride sensations" packLooking for a taste of adventure? With this pack compiled by Flaine’s French Ski School, advanced level skiers can quench their thirst for thrills as they devour the 400-metre vertical drop offered by the legendary Arbaron corridor at the end of the day, with stunning views over the Arve Valley and the Aravis Massif to boot.

Able to ski almost as soon as she could walk, Romane hit the slopes of HER resort from a very early age. After several years skiing in Flaine’s powder snow and through the slalom posts with the Club des Sports, she joined the French ski team in 2010 and now takes part in the Women’s World Cup Races. Last winter was her best season yet, with 6 TOP 10 World Cup positions and 2 French Champion titles in 2019 (Downhill and Super G), which should set her in good stead for the coming season…

ABOUT FlaineTO DISCOVER

Flaine, a Bauhaus resortSET AT THE HEART OF A NATURAL CIRQUE AT AN ALTITUDE OF 1,600 METRES, FLAINE’S UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE ENJOYS A PRIME MOUNTAINSIDE POSITION. The resort was created in the 1960’s by Eric and Sylvie Boissonnas, art patrons of the 20th century who loved both modern art and classical music, and who discovered avant-garde architecture during the 15 years they spent in the USA. When he came back to France, Eric Boissonnas called upon the services of Marcel Breuer, one of the Bauhaus masters, whose work he had already admired: the Unesco Headquarters in Paris and the Whitney Museum in New York in particular.

Their original aim was to establish a fi ne example of architecture and urban development in France, and Flaine was born as a result of this cultural movement.Built from exposed concrete, their façades cut like diamonds, the aim of this original and infl uential architect was to create an interplay of light and shadow on the buildings throughout the course of the day. A proud example of resolutely modern and radical design, Flaine’s use of concrete surprised many, and continues to do so to this day, but nevertheless it blends perfectly into its rocky surroundings.

A listed resort A GEM OF FRENCH HERITAGE, FLAINE HAS BEEN AWARDED SEVERAL DIFFERENT STATUSES, TITLES AND LABELS.Because of its originality, historical Flaine (Flaine Forum + Flaine Front de neige + Flaine Forêt) has received the “20th Century Heritage” label. Of note, its exceptional heritage includes an ecumenical chapel labelled a “Listed Historic Monument” since December 2014 while the “Le Flaine” hotel which defi es gravity and gives the impression of being suspended in mid-air, as well as the “Bételgeuse” building, which accentuates the resort’s contrasts with its “diamond-point” facades, create astonishing interplay with natural light. These two buildings have been included in the “French supplementary list of historic monuments” since 1991.

An open-airmodern art museum

Alongside its listed architecture, Flaine is also a real open-air museum… It’s the only resort in the world to have monumental and architectural artworks on permanent display, notably including "Le Boqueteau" by Jean Dubuff et, "La Tête de Femme" by Pablo Picasso and "Les Trois Hexagones" by Victor Vasarely!

To fi nd out more about the Flaine‘s artistic and architectural heritage:

Going solo! New: This winter, QR codes will be on display close to works of art throughout the resort. Linking to Flaine’s Art Centre website, users will fi nd information and videos about the art.

ENVIRONMENTALLY friendlyA sustainable resortA pioneer in terms of sustainable development, Flaine continues to launch innovative measures 50 years on. The fi rst mountain resort to be equipped with mains gas, the fi rst to bury its electric cables, to get cable TV, to install artifi cal snowmaking equipment...Flaine was at the cutting edge right from the word go. As far as getting around this car-free resort is concerned, everything can be easily reached on foot, on skis, by shuttlebus or thanks to 2 inclined lifts.

A Green Globe-certifi ed ski areaThe Grand Massif is the fi rst ski resort in the world to bear the Green Globe certifi cation; in recognition of the eff orts made by companies and organisations committed to sustainable tourism. Like 450 international tourism-focused businesses, the Grand Massif Ski Area bears the Green Globe certifi cation, which highlights sustainable development and the resort’s key values, including:

• Running an environmental observatory, the only one of its kind in France (see below)

• An environmental policy that aims to prevent pollution and reduce its impact, as much in day-to-day activities as in the planning and development of the ski area.

Unique in France: the Environmental Observatory In 2007, Flaine ski area decided to establish an environmental observatory, which is now being extended throughout the Grand Massif. With an aim to protect and respect the exceptional natural heritage, it covers 4,219 hectares over 5 diff erent municipalities. Its goal is to carry out exhaustive research and counts on biodiversity in all its forms: landscape, fl ora and fauna. This snapshot of the local biodiversity makes it possible to track growth in a factual way, to fi nd solutions to preserve the natural environment or restore it to its original state, and to preserve zones noted as problematic by the observatory. It places great importance on its desire to be exemplary in the way actions are implemented with regards the authorities and the regulations that are in place, taking a groundbreaking approach to its projects. The work carried out comprises three areas: observations, understandings and actions.

Natural skiing A variety of quiet mountain animals live alongside the resort visitors and now it’s possible to set off and discover them thanks to the wildlife observation service run in the ski area. In the company of a mountain leader, and armed with a pair of binoculars, everyone can get to know our mountain animals, fi nd out more about their amazing versatility and learn how we can help to protect them.

Free activity available throughout the season at the Désert Blanc chairlift.
