SAP Travel at ORNL – pre-2000s

• Pre-1990’s

– All processes paper-based until mid-90s

• Mid-1990’s

– Homegrown web application, Web Travel Services (WebTS), created for travel expense reimbursement

• 1998

– SAP was introduced as ERP for accounting, financials, and logistics replacing 80+ homegrown systems

• 1999

– SAP HR module was implemented to replace Cyborg

SAP Travel at ORNL – 2000-2010

• 2003

– SAP FI-TV travel “module” integrated with SAP financials (goodbye WebTS)

• In-house frontend, TravX, developed using SAP’s WebRFCframework (basic HTML and JavaScript)

• One prior year of WebTS imported to SAP TravX

• 2006

– Foreign Trip Reports (FTR) in-house frontend developed using SAP’s Business Service Pages (BSP) framework

– Conference Planning Tool (CPT) in-house frontend developed using SAP’s BSP framework

• 2009

– Foreign Travel Management System (FTMS) in-house frontend developed using SAP’s BSP framework

SAP Travel at ORNL – 2010-present

• 2015-2016

– Paperless receipts implemented for TravX

– Project to determine to continue Travel on-premise or move to a cloud provider

• Business objectives

– Provide a better user experience

– Integrate/consolidate applications

– Improve architecture

– After several months, the Travel team determined to modernize Travel on-premise

– $200K one-time modernization cost vs $300K per year in the cloud

SAP Travel at ORNL – 2017-present

• 2017-2018

– New mobile-friendly TravX developed using SAP’s BSP framework with HTML5 tools and widgets

• Enter, view, edit and submit travel expenses

• Capture and attach receipt images

• Review and approve travel expenses

• View travel itineraries

– “Wrapped” using Citrix tools and made available as a mobile app in the “ORNL Store”

• 2018-present

– Roll-out new TravX lab-wide June 2018
