THOUGHTS FOR THE JOURNEY
October 1st: October 8th:
October 15th:October 22nd: October 29th:
Alive Rather than Good Have you ever thought there has to be more to this Christian life than just being good? When we share our faith sometimes I think we point people to morality rather than the Gospel. Now the Gospel is not against morality, but that is not all it is. The gospel is about transformation of our lives and offering us a new life.
I think it is by Tullian Tchividjian that said, “The Gospel is not about making bad people good, but about making dead people, alive.” I think a common mistake we as Christians make sometimes is measuring our lives by our level of “goodness.” We say things like, “If I can be a better person than I was yesterday then I am obviously making progress in the process of becoming a better Christian.” This is not the heart of the gospel. The gospel desires to make us new and transformed rather than just good moral people.
Often I do think we get things turned around. We focus on ourselves. Focus on getting better. We use prayer, Bible study, and worship as a means to strengthen ourselves so we might be better Christians. God does want us to get better, but He understands that we cannot make ourselves better.
Dying in order to live. That is the pattern of the gospel of Jesus. Sacrifice, suffering, and struggles are never easy. But, before we can truly live, our sin, selfishness, and idolatry must die at the cross. As God prunes those things away, we can live more and more in the power of the Resurrection.
As the fall starts up, don’t try to be a better person, which is like treating the symptoms and ignoring the disease, instead let Christ transform you into the person He desires you to be. The change will happen once the transformation happens. I would rather be made alive than just good. This is the gospel.
~Blake
We know things are going to happen in our preschoolers’ lives where they will need God’s help—times when their lives will zig one way and then zag another. We want them to grow up believing that God loves them and can help them anywhere, with anything, no matter how hard it may be. He can even help them help others!
This month, we’ll learn about the life of David and how even when it zigged and zagged, God was there to help him. We will begin with David as a boy in a field with his sheep. David was alone in that field when he needed to protect his sheep. Actually, he wasn’t really alone. God was with him. And, God helped him protect his sheep from the scary lion. Our preschoolers will learn that God can help me anywhere.
Once David had proved that he was brave and strong by protecting his sheep and defeating Goliath, King Saul asked him to lead his troops into battle. God was with David and helped him win battle after battle. Our preschoolers will learn that God can help me do anything.
David wants to keep his promise to his good friend, Jonathan, to always take care of his family. He has his servants search until they find Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth. The servants bring Mephibosheth, who is lame in both feet, to the David, and he provides all that Mephibosheth needs. David even invited Mephibosheth to eat at the king’s table. Our preschoolers will learn that God can help me help others.
In Psalm 24:1, we read, The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, (NIV). In other words, whatever we have isn’t really ours. God created the entire world—the land and sea, planets and galaxies, animals and people. And when people create, those people do so because of the gift and talents that God gave them. It’s our job to take care of what God has loaned us for a time to use in order to bring Him glory.
Jesus put stewardship into action. He used the time He had on earth wisely, never wasting a moment, but always working towards God’s plan. He used what He had—from bread and fish, to dirt and spit—to perform miracles, helping people see and eat. Everything Jesus did showed us how we can take care of God’s stuff by using it the way that points people to God and fulfills the mission God has for our lives.
Remember, everything belongs to the Lord. Kids have an easy time claiming what’s theirs. One of the first words a child learns is “mine!” We want kids to understand that what they have is actually on loan to us. Remembering that everything belongs to God is the first step in choosing to use what we have wisely, because what we have belongs to God.
Live like you know what really matters. The world is filled with voices telling us what should be important—money, power, fame, and personal glory. But what God wants for us is different. When we live our life for only things that matter on earth, they’ll end up fading away and being destroyed. Instead, we pray kids will learn to make choices about their life that will matter for eternity.
