A Mother’s LoveA mother’s love is something

that no one can explain.

It is made of deep devotion

And of sacrifice and pain.

It is endless and unselfish

and enduring, come what may,

For nothing can destroy it

Or take that love away

It is patient and forgiving

when all others are forsaking,

And it never fails or falters,

even though the heart is breaking.

It believes beyond believing,

when the world around condemns,

And it glows with all the beauty

of the rarest, brightest gems.

It is far beyond defining,

it defies all explanation,

And it still remains a secret,

like the mysteries of creation,

And many splendored miracles,

Man cannot understand,

And another wondrous evidence,

Of God’s tender, guiding hand.

Life EpitomeMartha Ann Pitts was born January 14, 1940, in Barney, GA, to the late Willie S. and Verna Y. Williams. She was one of six children: Lois M. Moore (deceased), William R. Williams (Ella M.), Mattie L. Jackson, Willie M. Scott (deceased) (Roger), and Francis B. Johnson.

Martha was a devoted Christian. At an early age, she was baptized by her father and became a member of Rocky Mt. Zuma A.M.E. Church in Barney, GA. Later, she joined Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Miami, FL. She was a dedicated member and served on the Usher Board and Pastor’s Aid Board, in the choir, and as Trustee Pro Tem.

Martha attended the historic Morven Rosenwald High School in Brooks County. There, she was a good student and superstar girls basketball player. She joined the Future Farmers of America organization and excelled in home economics.

After graduation, Martha attended the Miami Dade County Barber College in Miami, FL. Newly licensed, she returned home and worked at Turner Barber Shop in Quitman, GA. Martha was the first female African American barber to hold a license and practice in Brooks County.

In 1962, she moved back to Miami, FL, where she met and later married James Willie Pitts. From this union, their children are: Michael A. Pitts of Miami, Craig L. Pitts, Sr., of Miami, and Alverretta Pitts of Tallahassee; grandchildren, Craig L. Pitts, Jr., of Ohio, and Shakaira Joseph (Ricky) of Miami; and great-granddaughter, Raven Joseph. Martha became affectionately known as “Mom” to many other young people she met on her life’s journey.

She was the owner-operator of M-MACK Barber Shop. She enjoyed her work and spending time with her clients for 56 years. She also had a passion for sewing. She became a seamstress back in high school and later would teach sewing education classes at North County Elementary and Miami Dade Community College. She served as president of the PTA.

Martha enjoyed laughter, life, and gardening. She grew the most beautiful orchids and took pride in a well-manicured lawn. She took care of herself and others. She was the center and anchor for so many of her family members and friends.

Martha Ann Pitts was a matriarch. She will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Although she departed this life on January 29, 2018, her legacy lives on in her children and their families, her siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
