The conditions and the requirements of the statement of Faith are clearly described for our children in such a style that they will grasp it without any difficulty. All the Articles of Faith have been explained to them in a very easy manner. In fact every child gets the clear idea of all the requirements of Faith by reading this book, and this was one aim which has been achieved in a perfect manner. The second aim was to promote healthy extracurricular activities in the school children. Various types of debates, writing competitions and sports produce sound effects both mentally and physically upon the children. They become fluent in expressing themselves through words whether it is by speaking or by writing. Such competitions increase the thinking capabilities of the children, making them creative and expressive.

  • 9 Laa Ilaaha 1/lallaah A Muslim Childs Way of LifeThe Ministry of Education organized acompetition for the best research paperon one of the five pillars of Islam andallocated valuable prizes for the first fivewinners. The terms and conditions of thecompetition included the following:1. The paper should not exceed ten pages.2. The competitor should not be over fifteen years of age.3. The paper should be submitted within two weeks.4. The same paper can be shared by more than one competitor.The Ministry of Education stated in aleaflet that a delegate of the Ministrywas going to distribute the prizes inperson to the winners.The news of the competition and thevaluable prizes had a deep impact on the
  • 10students as well as their parents. All thestudents wanted to win a prize. Theteachers also wanted their own studentsto stand a chance of winning one ofthose valuable prizes.All the schools that participated in thecompetition turned into what lookedlike a beehive as a result of the studentshectic movements to find the right booksof reference. Some students were lookingin books of Fiqh to write on prayer, somewere reading about pilgrimage, otherswere concerned with Zakaah, otherswere thinking about writing on fasting,and others chose to write on theStatement of Faith: Laa ilaaha illallaah.Many students felt that the papers theyhad produced were of a poor quality, sothey disappointedly tore them up andgave up the idea of taking part in thecompetition. Some students, however,sought advice from their parents andconsulted their teachers for help. Thosestudents who had written papers were
  • 11both nervous and excited as the deadlineapproached. They all managed to meetthe deadline after all.The big day of announcing the resultsand distributing the prizes came after along wait. The students who had takenpart in the competition went early to theschool to find out about the results.Some of them were not as concernedwith the prize itself as they were withsuccess. Success has a special taste andbrings with it joy and happiness.Everyone was hoping to win. Teacherswere hoping that their own studentswould win the prize. Principals werehoping that their schools would win.Parents were even more concerned abouttheir children winning the prize.The students rushed to school to findout whether or not they would spot theirnames on the notice board in the schoolyard.The Ministry of Education had alreadyannounced that Saeed bin Jubair School
  • 12 was the school which had won the first prize, and the paper that won the prize was written by a fourteen-year-old student named Abdur-Rahmiin. The title of the paper was Laa ilaaha illallaah: A Muslim Childs Way of Life. Abdur- Rahmiin discussed in this paper the meaning of Laa ilaaha illallaah, its status, its conditions, its virtues and its requirements. Like the rest of the students who were waiting for the big day to come, Abdur- Rahmaan left home early that day. He was confident of winning the first prize. He prayed all the way to school, and when he got there, he found a big surprise awaiting him. He was indeed the first prize winner! His eyes lit up with joy, and he fell prostrate on the floor next to the headmasters office, offering thanks to Allah for the major achievement he had made. Mr. Khaalid, the principal of the school, was elated with joy. He walked towards him andI
  • 13congratulated him on this achievement.In the morning assembly that day, it wasMr. Khaalid who addressed the studentsand the faculty. He opened his speech bygiving praises to Allah and invokingAllahs blessings upon His Messenger.Then he thanked Abdur-Rahmaan forthe efforts he had made to win the firstprize. He also considered this success asuccess not for one person, but for thewhole school community. Before heconcluded his speech, he requestedAbdur-Rahmaan to read his paper beforehis teachers and fellow students.Abdur-Rahmaan came forward, his paperin his right hand, and stood on aplatform which was prepared for theoccasion. Then he began reading hispaper.

Ibear witness that there is no one worthyof worship except Allah, and I bearwitness that Muhammad is His slave andMessenger.The present paper is primarily concernedwith the meaning of Laa ilaaha iUallaah,the noble status it occupies in Islam, itsconditions, virtues and requirements.Allah the Almighty says: ~~ -Jl ~l 1 ~~ %~~ "So know that Laa ilaaha illallaah (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah)."   • 15 "Whoever said: Laa ilaaha illallaah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) with sincerity from his heart will enter Paradise."1. The meanings of Laa ilaaha illallaahThis statement simply means that nonedeserves to be worshipped except Allah,for He is the Creator, the Sustainer, theProvider, the One Who causes death andthe One Who gives life.All acts of worship should be directedsolely to Him alone. Any act of worshipwhich is not directed to Him will beinvalid and will not be accepted. It willinstead bring ruin and punishment onhim on the Day of Judgement if he doesnot repent from it.Allah is the true God to Whom we shouldturn our hearts with total love, fear andhope. We should have total relianceupon Him, seeking His help and refuge.Our hearts should turn to no one but totheir Creator, nor should they display
  • 16love for other than Him or fear or hopefor other than His Mercy.Laa ilanha illallaah negates all deities, forAllah alone is the only true God, Whoalone deserves to be worshipped. He is theLord of the worlds, the Ever Living, theOne Who sustains and protects all thatexists. He is the Creator and theSustainer. To Him belongs the kingdom ofthe heavens and the earth. It is He Whogives life and causes death, and He haspower over all things. He rose over theThrone in a manner that suits His Majesty.He is over His Throne above the seventhheaven. He is with us by His Knowledgeonly, not by His Personal Self. It is not truethat He is present everywhere, as somepeople mistakenly say.Laa ilaaha illallaah confirms Godshiponly for Allah, Who has the best ofNames and the most perfect Attributes.2. The high status of Laa ilaaha illallaah:Laa ilaaha illallaah occupies a highposition because it is the essence of
  • 17Islam and the basis of the belief inTawheed, or Islamic monotheism.Indeed, it is the key to Paradise. It isbecause of this statement that Allah created Paradise and Hell and divided people into believers and disbelievers. It is also because of this statement that He legislated Jihaad, or fighting in the way of Allah. It is also for this statement that we will receive reward or punishment, and questioning and judgement will be administered on the Day of Judgement concerning it. Everyone of us be questioned about vvillthree things: "Who is your Lord, whatwas your religion, and who was yourProphet that you followed?" The answerto the first question can be realizedthrough the statement of faith, byunderstanding its meaning, sincerelybelieving in what it negates andconfirms, acting upon its commands andmeeting its conditions and requirements.This great statement, Laa ilaaha
