HERE’S something you don’t seeevery day. Last night’s THAI Airways 50thbirthday celebration (see p7)included a curiously juxtaposedcultural performance combiningtraditional Thai dancers withdidgeridoo-playing Indigenousperformers (right)symbolising thelong-time linksbetween TG andAustralia. Guests at theevent were alsoentertained witha speciallycommissionedvideo whichfeatured several industry playersreminiscing about THAI and theearly days of the industry. One jocular comment camefrom Orient Express Travel chiefTom Manwaring, who jokinglyrecalled: “Cathay, Malaysian,THAI - we used to meet at thepub every Friday to set prices. “Of course we can’t do thatthese days,” he quipped.

QH Princess power JTG/QANTAS Holidays ceo PeterCollins told TD last night he wasthrilled at the way bookings forthe wholesaler’s new cruise rangestarted flowing in after theprogram details were published inyesterday’s Travel Daily. QH has also clarified that it’sable to sell Princess Cruises thatstart in Australia and end in anoverseas destination, with theonly restrictions on PrincessCruises which both depart fromAND return to Australia.

No Expedia fee EXPEDIA this morningannounced that effectiveimmediately it will completelyeliminate the joining fee for itsTravel Agents Affiliate Program, which had been temporarilywaived since the programlaunched (TD 01 Mar). “We have received such a greatuptake to the program and thejoining fee is such a small part...we decided to drop itcompletely,” said spokesmanStuart Udy. “Bookings are at record levelsand we are well ahead of ourrevenue targets so there is simplyno need for the fee to be there.” He said there are now over 3000Expedia TAAP agents in Australiaand New Zealand - seewww.expediaaccess.com/au.

More hols on the radar THERE’S good news for thetravel industry in a surveyreleased by Roy Morgan Researchyesterday, which showed thatmore Australians intend to take aholiday in the next 12 months. During the Mar quarter anestimated 12.7 million Aussies(70%) said they expect to go awayat least once in the next year - anincrease of 600,000 on the sameperiod last year. Most consumers (57.7%) saidthey expected the trip to be

within Australia, whichspokesperson Jane Ianniello saidcould “herald a recovery of thelanguishing domestic market”. However there was also a verysignificant (20%) increase in thoseintending to take an overseasholiday, which was up 1.5 pointsto 8.5% of the total compared tothe same period last year. Some of those surveyed werecertain they would take a breakbut weren’t sure if it would bedomestic or overseas. Ianniello said the increase was areflection of rising consumerconfidence.

Emirates standing tall at ATM THE Emirates stand is one ofthe popular exhibits that visitorsare flocking to see at this year’sArabian Travel Market in Dubai. The Emirates rotating globestands at 9.5 metres high and hasa circumference of 65 metres, which is split into three zones - AlMaha Desert Resort & Spa, WolganValley Resort & Spa and EmiratesAirline’s products and services. The Dubai-based carrier says itremains committed to deliveringvalue to its customers andsupporting the growth of tourismin Dubai and the UAE. Speaking to Travel Daily at ATMin Dubai yesterday, EK’s divisionalsenior vp, commercial operationsworldwide, Richard Vaughan(pictured right), said all of theairline’s routes are growing inpopularity, in particular its newflights to Amsterdam launchedlast Sat, which departedcompletely full. The relatively new 6am flightsfrom Sydney to Dubai (TD 04 Nov)have also proved to be popularfor economy travellers, “althoughthe early start is a littlechallenging for the premiumservice”, Vaughan admitted. Today’s issue of TD is comingfrom the 2010 Arabian Travel

Market in Dubai, courtesy of theGovernment of Dubai & Emirates. DUBAI has become a hotspot forinternational jetsetters, and it’s notsurprising considering it’s tax-freeand offers great shopping, dryweather, a high standard ofaccommodation, a diverse range offood and stunning beaches. The emirate is growing so fast thatit’s hardly recognisable whentravellers return to visit. Almost everything that’s built inDubai is the biggest or the largest, and “this is only the beginning ofDubai...the future will bring muchmore than this”, Dubai Tourismdeputy director overseaspromotions, Abdullah bin Suwaidantells Travel Daily at ATM. The Palm Island Deira will betwice the size as the Palm Jumeirahwhen it is eventually completed. Dubailand, slated to open in 2017,will be eight times bigger thanDisneyland in the USA, and Asia-Asia will become the world’s largesthotel, offering 5,600 rooms. The Mall of Arabia will surpassMall of the Emirates, and becomethe largest shopping centre in theworld when it opens in Dubailand. So how does a visitor get aroundthis magnificent city? On the largest automated metro inthe world, of course! Partially opened in Sep 2009, theDubai Metro is an easy and cheapoption to plan a journey. The rechargeable red ticket isideal for tourists and visitors, andcan be purchased from AED 2, andis valid for 90 days.
