Technoparks around the World• Technopark establishments started with Silicon Valley, USA in

1951 with the leadership of Stanford University in California USA• USA was followed by developed European countries and

Japan over the next 20 years• 1980’s: technoparks increased dramatically particularly in

USA, England, Spain, Italy, Germany and Japan• In 2000’s: spread all over the World, including China• Recently, there are approximately 900 technoparks in

operation in the world. This number increases to 4000 with the inclusion of incubation centers.

Technoparks in Türkiye

• In Türkiye, technopark establishments were started in late 1990's• Technology Development Area (offical name for Technopark)• Technology Development Areas Law issued in 2001 • Include firms which produce/develop new technologies/software and transform a

technological invention into a commercial product, method or service• Located on the campus of a university or research institution• Combine academic, economic and social structures• 49 technoparks were established in Turkiye between 2001-2013• 34 technoparks are in construction stage

What is Sociopark?

• A unique project of İstanbul Medeniyet University that enables the collaboration between the university and society• New facility similiar to technopark or biopark in social sciences• Objective of directing the social development policies• Create solutions for the social problems in both national and

international levels • Benefits for the society from the knowledge and research ability of

the university• Support the collaborations in interdisciplinary common research

5. Legal Infrastructure

• Legal infrastructure is in use for technoparks and it is essential for socioparks, especially for tax exemption and support• #4691 Law on Development of Technological Areas as an example• #2547 Turkish Republic Higher Education Law• New laws are needed for an effective sociopark• Protection of copyrights and intellectual property rights, filling the

loopholes in the law are essential

6. R&D in Social Sciences

• Despite powerful R&D infrastructure and application areas in technical sciences, it is not the case in social sciences and need to be developed in this area• Produce scientific knowledge and new methods• Produce solutions to social and administrative problems, transforming

the collected data to public policy in order to find positive values in social sciences• Conduct surveys and observations• Support to solve the problems that may arise in every field

Sociopark,

• is a new concept that IMU introduced in social sciences • is an important tool to contribute to the development of society by

producing influential projects with the collaboration of university and social institutions as in university-industry collaborations• is something that we believe will enhance the development of social

areas
