One Address.Two Statements.
Midnight stands tall as a single address. View further and it reveals a breathtaking duality. Inspired exterior facades deliver two rich facets of modern Canberra seamlessly in one unprecedented design.
Cast your gaze eastward to Mort Street and beyond and be immersed in the intoxicating creative energy of Braddon’s iconic Lonsdale Street, with a distinctly more creative facade sending the boldest of expressions to the street. The Mort Street frontage is punctuated by an eclectic mix of glazing and raw textures, wrapped in an intriguingly irregular apartment stack to capture the imagination of the outside world.

Five Minutes with David Sutherland
What was your vision for Midnight?
Distinct, modern and alluring, Midnight’s design vision was inspired by the differing characteristics of the two streets on which it sits: Mort Street on the Braddon side, hip and trendy, and Northbourne Avenue to the west reflecting a more traditional Canberra persona.
The result is a blending of two delightfully different worlds in one intriguing modern building.
What was your design approach?
The subtly sunken entry lobby creates a different world as visitors descend below street level to be greeted by a series of contemporary lounges, bars and cafés. The north-facing U-shaped footprint harnesses an abundance of natural light for residents to enjoy whatever the season.
The hotel offering is discretely situated at the centre of the building, enveloped by the private apartments wrapping the outer edges and separated by double corridors to ensure complete privacy for residents at all times.
What is the most striking feature?
Without question the centrepiece of Midnight is the enchanting internal courtyard and waterfall. Dark and seductive at any hour, slivers of natural light filter down to the landscaped floor. This will be a beguiling place of sensory delights.
This mix of sensations is the very manifestation of Midnight itself and is like no other place in Canberra. You could sit there all day, it’s just delightful.
A key figure in some of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary architectural projects. We talk to David Sutherland, Director of Design and Planning for Fender Katsalidis Architects, about the design inspiration behind Midnight.

Sound has long been the forgotten element in the built environment. To enhance the central role it plays in enlivening experiences, premium Sonos® audio systems have been specified for all apartments, integrated discreetly into the existing ceiling spaces. Other sound-enhancing design features include double glazing in all apartments, together with high quality noise insulation in the walls and floors.
Soundtrack: Life Music makes a rich and vibrant contribution to contemporary living. In recognition of this Midnight has forged a rare partnership with internationally-renowned electronic duo, The Aston Shuffle. This unique collaboration has seen the Canberra-based musicians work closely with Midnight design teams to optimise the acoustic and entertainment experiences for residents and visitors alike. It will also see The Aston Shuffle curate all music and sound installations featured in Midnight’s public spaces, as well as create the ideal sound configurations for the residential apartments and hotel rooms.
Longer term, the partnership may even yield a bespoke Midnight recording studio for local and travelling artists.

Who are The Aston Shuffle? The Aston Shuffle are Mikah Freeman and Vance Musgrove, an electronic music duo originally from Canberra. Multi-talented producers, DJs and musicians, they’ve been making music and performing together for more than a decade. Today they stand at the forefront of Australia’s electronic music scene, hailed by peers around the world for their effervescent house-inspired releases, which have included remixes for acts in the calibre of London Grammar, Empire of the Sun, RÜFÜS and multiple 2016 ARIA winner, Flume.
Beyond their live DJ gigs and a recording career that’s delivered two albums and myriad appearances on the iconic Ministry of Sound compilations since 2008, they also host their own weekly dance music show on Triple J, ‘Friday Night Shuffle’.

Things really began to take off for you guys in 2008. How much has the Canberra music scene changed since then?
It’s changed a lot since we started this crazy journey of a career in music. The dance scene in 2008 had started to emerge from its underground roots but hadn’t yet reached the full mainstream, main stage status it holds today. The scene was relatively small due to Canberra’s size. All the local DJs hit up Landspeed Records on a weekly basis trying to pester the Budak Brothers (which is no easy feat) for the hottest new records blowing up overseas before others got their hands on them. Local street press, like BMA magazine, was the main source of information on upcoming gigs from local and international artists. Fast forward to 2017 and dance music is popular culture, hipsters and collectors are the ones buying records, music news is now delivered by apps, and Canberra artists are ruling the airwaves across the country. We’ve come a long way!
As Canberra locals, what do you think about the way Braddon has evolved during the past decade?
It’s pretty incredible how fast and how much Braddon has evolved over the last few years! Melbourne and Sydney thrive on these little cultural hubs that have an eclectic mix of cafes, bars, restaurants and retailers sitting right on the doorstep of a sought-after residential area. It’s great because it supports innovative local enterprises instead of larger chains and it also has a great vibe from breakfast through to last drinks. Canberra has been crying out for a neighbourhood like this for a really long time, and Braddon makes perfect sense.
Have you ever played and/or attended a gig in Braddon?
We haven’t had the chance to play in Braddon - in our Canberra heyday, the main nightclubs were situated elsewhere in Canberra, but that’s changing now so you might see our name pop up in the Braddon precinct soon!
What do you think of GEOCON’s vision to change the face of residential Canberra to make it more of a global, mature city?
We believe Canberra needs visionary developers to help grow its status as a global city, particularly now that the international airport is truly beginning to open us up to the world. It’s high time we break the perception that it’s just a town for politicians and school excursions, and we see Geocon’s work with Midnight as a huge contribution towards this.
You’ve seen a lot of the world performing as The Aston Shuffle. Is there a global city or place that Midnight reminds you of?
Midnight promises to bring a lifestyle to Braddon that isn’t far removed from somewhere like New York or London. The feeling of living in a vibrant neighbourhood, with bars, cafes and restaurants right at your doorstep – this is what’s so alluring about those cities, and we can see this is exactly what Midnight is going to bring to Braddon. Looking further down the track, Midnight’s proximity to the forthcoming light rail project means that Civic, Dickson and other neighbourhoods will be accessible without a car, and that’s another hallmark of New York and London living that’s going to create an exciting new lifestyle in Canberra, with Midnight sitting right at the centre.
It’s something that’s often overlooked, but why is sound such an important consideration in apartment living?
Quite simply, sound is key in helping transform a functional space into a luxurious and sensory environment. Great sound in the home is equal parts separation from the outside world, and create a feeling of sanctuary in your own space, and these two elements enhance all the functions that we need our modern homes to perform.
What does it add to a modern lifestyle?
It’s a crucial part of a modern lifestyle. Music used to be something people consumed as a product – something we bought in a physical format, in bricks and mortar stores. In 2017, we carry devices that put millions of albums at our fingertips 24/7, completely on demand, and so music and sound have become more deeply ingrained in our lifestyles than ever before. When done well, music and sound fit seamlessly into a modern home no matter what the mood.

GEOCON’s vision is ‘building Canberra.’ How does Midnight fit in with this?
Midnight is a key part of it, especially as it’s such a high-profile site in the heart of the inner north. We’re a proud Canberra business and right from the beginning we knew this was a tremendous opportunity to make a real statement of intent about our vision for Canberra’s urban future. When we first sat down with Fender Katsalidis Architects we knew we wanted to be more ambitious and adventurous, stir the pot a little and really get out of our comfort zone.
That was the genesis of Midnight and we couldn’t be happier with how it’s progressed ever since. It’s the most intriguing development we’ve ever undertaken, dark and seductive, completely non-typical, which is exactly what we wanted. It’s a fabulous addition, not just to Braddon but all of Canberra.
The inner north isn’t short of residential developments. What sets Midnight apart?
First and foremost just look at the design, there’s nothing else like it. But beyond aesthetics the site itself is incredibly exciting. Midnight really does have the prime location of any development in the inner north, nestled perfectly between Northbourne and Lonsdale.
Midnight is the most intriguing development we have ever undertaken.
Georgalis Nick
Everything you could possibly want is right at your door. The size of the site also gives Midnight a real advantage. Braddon hasn’t seen this scale of development for a long time, if ever. Historically most developments in the area have been quite ‘boutique’, the apartments are typically very small and expensive which immediately excludes a lot of buyers. Midnight is completely different. I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised at the value for money they’ll find here, there’s no need to compromise on location or lifestyle.
Who do you think Midnight is going to appeal to?
Midnight is going to appeal to a lot of different buyers. All of the discussions we’ve had to date indicate that pretty clearly. Obviously the penthouses lend themselves to that top end of the market, especially with more and more traditional suburban house owners being drawn towards Braddon and the inner north. I think we’ll see a lot of interest from people whose families have grown up and they’re now looking to downsize.
But the great thing about Midnight is its scale which means there’s a fantastic choice of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, offering incredible value. Young professional couples who want to be close to the city and the local nightlife will just love it here. We’re also seeing interest from the parents of university students and investors, again I think that’s a direct result of the prime location. When you add in the new light rail from 2019, it’s hard to beat.
