1963 In 1963 the Club formed a women’s team for the first time. It played in E3 Grade in the SAWHA and won a premiership in its first season. This team was upgraded over the next four years, winning the premiership in each of the grades to which they were elevated, the last being in B2 Grade in 1967. The first edition of The Magpie was published in April of this year and was issued fortnightly in its early production. The first Editor was John Searles. Later it was published monthly and continued until the early 1980’s. It was a valuable source of information to members and a credit to those members who were involved with its production and distribution.

‘EDITORIAL: “The Magpie” – April 1963

‘Confidence is faith in things unseen, built upon experience of the past knowledge of current events.’ To increase the Club spirit this newspaper has been launched to provide information of the past, what is happening at the moment in management and on the field, and the forward thinking of the Club in its various spheres. The morale of players rests on this confidence, faith in themselves and their Club. We are sure all members will benefit in some way by this paper. Most important – this is your paper – make full use of it.’

Two members of the Club, Arthur Weir and Don Germein, were elected as Life Members of the John Hart Oval Committee, the peak group that managed the three tenants of the John Hart Oval (Port Adelaide Hockey Club, Port Adelaide Soccer Club and Port Adelaide District Netball Association). Don Germein was elected a Life Member and also was elected to the Management Committee of the South Australian Hockey Association. Dennis Meredith was the winner of the Amateur Sports Club Memorial Trophy for Hockey this year. This trophy was awarded each year to the most outstanding player in South Australia under the age of 21 in a number of different sports.

This year also saw the start of Dennis Meredith’s illustrious umpiring career when he was awarded his ‘A’ Grade Umpires Badge. It is interesting to note that in the Minutes of the Management Committee held on 23 February that ‘permission was granted for the consumption of beer, as well as soft drinks, after working bees at the Clubrooms’.

1967 1967 will go down as one of the most memorable in the Club’s history. The main highlights were the first A1 Grade Premiership (coached by Bruce Baulderstone), the first Pakistan Cup and the Club’s first Australian team representatives, Dennis Meredith (World Tour and London Pre-Olympic Tournament) and John Giblin (New Zealand Tour).

Don Germein became Treasurer of the South Australian Hockey Association, a position he occupied for four years. The Club had investments of $1,000. Keith Cosh was elected a Life Member. John Giblin and Dennis Meredith were selected in the State Senior team,

1969 In 1969 the Club was successful in obtaining two premierships in men’s A2 and D1 Grades. The club had its highest ever representation in the State Senior team with 6 representatives. The Management and Members expressed regret and sorrow over the death of Roth (Rocky) Martin, a Club Life Member, a former State player, captain and coach and an Australian Selector. Only one women’s team was nominated this year and it proved to be their last season, with some players leaving the sport and others transferring to other Clubs.
