Joint ISO & IATF Press Release
• In October 2016 IATF 16949:2016 will be published by IATF and will supersede
and replace the current ISO/TS16949, defining the requirements of a quality
management system for organizations in the automotive industry. It will be
aligned with and refer to te most recent version of ISO’s quality management
system standard ISO9001:2015.
• IATF 16949:2016 will fully respect ISO9001:2015 structure and requirements.
• IATF 16949:2016 is not a stand-alone quality management system standard, but
is implemented as a supplement to, and in conjunction with, ISO9001:2015.
• IATF will ensure continual alignment with ISO9001 by maintaining strong
cooperation with ISO, through its participation in ISO/TC176.

IATF Supplemental Press Release
• IATF 16949:2016 represents an innovative document with strong customer
orientation. Feedback solicited from certification bodies, auditors, suppliers and
original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) shaped the development of this
International Standard.
• IATF 16949:2016 also incorporates common automotive
customer-specific requirements.

Why an automotive sector specific
standard?
• Allows IATF to control the automotive content,
• Allows IATF to track implementation related issues,
• Allows IATF to provide regular implementation support and guidance
through sanctioned interpretations and frequently asked questions,
• Allows IATF the ability to release a revised standard to address weakness
and new approaches at more regular intervals
• Note: IATF 16949:2016 does not include the ISO9001 text “boxed” as with
the current version of ISO/TS16949:2009

Why launch from 1st October 2016?
• Allows time for organizations to consider implementation and raise
questions for clarification and understanding,
• Allows time for certification bodies to consider both implementation and
auditability and raise question for understanding,
• Allows IATF to provide guidance and direction to questions related to
implementation and auditability through the IATF Oversight offices,
• Guidance and direction will be provided through the regular release of
sanctioned interpretations and frequently asked questions via the global
oversight website

• available from 1st October 2016,
• available to pre-order off the SMMT website from today,
• staying with the current format A5 ring bound,

Transition changes
• Timing requirements: removal of option 2,
• Audit time requirements: need for additional 0.5 – 1.0 day linked to the
organization provision of information to support the audit planning process,
• Audit transition: clarification, not allowable at a transfer audit,
• Audits to ISO/TS16949: cease from 1st October 2017,
• Certificate decision: allowed after certificate expiry providing within 120 day
requirement is maintained,
• Continuing updates: will be provided moving forward.

What's next – timing and implementation?
• 1st Oct 2016: IATF 16949 becomes available
• 1st Nov 2016: IATF Rules 5th becomes available
• 1st Jan 2017: CB audits to IATF 16949 can be conducted
• 1st Oct 2017: Audits to ISO/TS16949:2009 cease
• 14th Sep 2018: All current certified suppliers have to complete their transition
