Mission Statement As a parish family of St. Francis de Sales Church, we are committed to stewardship as

our way of life. We place God first in all things. Centered in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, we devote ourselves to proclaim the Gospel. We are dedicated to grow as a faith community to holiness through prayer, sacraments and service to all God’s people.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 4, 2016

Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness

all our days. — Psalm 90:14

A New Saint ! On September 4, 2016, Blessed Mother Teresa

becomes Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

She was born Agnes Bojaxhiu in Alba-nia on Aug 26, 1910, and at age 18 went to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto following what she discerned to be a call to become a missionary.

On Sept 10, 1946, Sister Teresa had an extraordinary conversion experience,

what she later described as “the call within the call.” While traveling by train from Calcutta to the Loreto convent in Darjeeling she experienced interior visions that led her to the conviction that Christ was calling her to serve “ the poorest of the poor.” Mother Teresa died on Sept 5, 1997 with over 4000 sisters operating 610 missions in 123 countries and aided by more than one million co-workers. It has been said of her, “ She is the United Nations. She is peace in the world.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes, this “Treasures” column can seem to be a species of crib-notes for Catholic Jeopardy. Indeed, you may never know when knowledge of our particular vocabulary may come in handy. Such is the case with pa-pal bulls, which conjure up all sorts of images, but are ac-tually not what you might expect. A bull is a papal letter on a matter of great consequence, such as a decision about a crisis in the Church, the declaration of a doctrine, the summoning of a council, or the canonization of a saint. It has a more solemn intention than a mere letter or even an encyclical, a teaching letter circulated through the whole Church. Its odd name comes from the Latin bulla, which is the stamp used to apply a signatorial design to the hot lead, or even molten silver or gold, that seals the decree. The format for the bull is the name of the pope in Latin, followed by the title “servant of the servants of God,” also in Latin, and then the text. The title of the bull is always the first two words of the text. Some famous papal bulls are Exsurge Domine (Arise, O Lord), written against Martin Luther’s Ninety-five Theses in 1520; Munifi-centissimus Deus (The Most Bountiful God), the promul-gation of the dogma of the Assumption in 1950 by Pope Pius XII; or Humanae Salutis (Human Salvation), by which Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council in 1962.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayers for the Sick and Dying

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the best means of assisting the dying. Jesus revealed the power of this prayer to St. Faustina. The Lord gave many promises regarding recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the sick and or dying. There are parishioners who regularly pray the chaplet. We are currently forming a prayer chain and accepting prayer requests. If you are interested in joining the prayer chain, please contact Bea Harrigan at (973) 827-0083. If you have a special prayer request for a loved one who is sick and dying, you may call Bea Harrigan, Cheryl Avery at (973) 702-1342, or Denise Drogo at (973) 875-6863.

FUNERAL SUPPORT MINISTRY: This ministry is to provide comfort and assistance to those attending funeral liturgies at St. Francis de Sales. Compassion and caring for those during a most difficult time. We ask that you arrive 1/2 hour before the funeral to greet the family and friends and assist in any way possible. Stay through the service and remain until the entou-rage has left for the cemetery. Members of this ministry will be notified by telephone when there is a funeral. Contact: Joanne Matthes (973) 827-3248 x 124 ROSARY MAKERS MINISTRY: Our Lady asked the children of Fatima to pray the rosary, therefore our ministry’s mission is to help spread the message of Mary’s request. Our rosary’s go to people all over the world, but are also used by our parish family. The rosaries are made by hand, but are fun and easy to do. It takes as much time as you’re willing to devote and just a little bit of patience in the beginning. It takes about 20 minutes to com-plete 1 rosary. The beauty is you can make them at your con-venience, where and when you want to make them.

Contact: Pat Pastore (973) 903-7971

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY : Our mission is to support the sick of our parish and community by producing warm and loving shawls to envelop those who need it the most along with our prayers. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on Tuesday morn-ings at 9:30AM, but arrangements can be made to make shawls on your own. We will provide the instructions, so that the sizing is consistent. They can be knit or crocheted.

St. Francis has many Ministries. Which one (s) are right for YOU?

XYZ Xtra Years of Zest: Offers our Parish seniors an oppor-tunity to celebrate life- prayerfully, socially and through for-mation of friendships with others. XYZ meets once a month for a few hours, usually the first Wednesday afternoon of each month. We encourage creative ideas and skills to help and serve others. Please help us keep the XYZ Club active and growing. Contact: Kathy Brady (973) 827-4526 RUTH’S MINISTRY : Is a fellowship of widows coming together to share their grief, their stories and provide strength for each other. Feeling isolated and lost during this time, we need the friendship of others going through the same thing. We gather in the Library every month on the second Thursday at 6:30PM. ADULT FAITH FORMATION

September 4, 2016 - 23th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

“Everyone of you who does not renounce all his pos-

sessions cannot be my disciple” - Luke 12:33

When we first hear this statement, it seems Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief

that they belong to us. Everything we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess

or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly

are His Disciples.
