by Riistem Hayat and Claus ClauDen

Abstract: 10 species of Paragus Latreille are recorded from Turkey. Paragus (Paragus)kopdagensis n. sp. is described and illustrated. A key to separate P. kopdagensis from the mostsimilar West Palaearctic species (P. absidiatus Goeldlin de Tiefenau, P. pUllctu/atus Zetterstedt,P. a/bi/rons (Fallen)) is given. P. absidiatus, P. a::ureus scrupens Stuckenberg, P. coadunatusRondani, P. constrictus Simic, P. oltenicus StAnescu and P. romanicus Stanescu arc new recordsfor the Turkish fauna.

Key words: Diptera, Syrphidae, Paragus, new species, new records, Turkey.

IntroductionThe genus Paragus Latreille is a small genus, the larvae of which are aphid predators, TheWest Palaearctic species were last revised by GOELDLlN DE TIEFENAU (1976), and since thena further 11 species have been described from this subregion (STANESCU 1977, 1981, 1991,1992, GOELDLlN DE TIEFENAU & LUCAS 1981, KAPLAN & THOMPSON 1981, SIMIC 1986,MARCOS-GARCIA 1986, 1994, CLAUBEN 1989), There is no key to enable all these species tobe identified, Males may be recognized by the structure of the terminalia, but females oftenremain unidentifiable,

Nine species of Paragus have been recorded from Turkey since 1976, Three of thesespecies belong to the subgenus Pandasyoptha/mus Stuckenberg, 1954: P, abrogansGoeld1in de Tiefenau, 1971 (HAvAT & ALAoGLU 1990), P. haemorrhous Meigen, 1822(SPEIGHT & LUCAS 1992), and P. tibialis (Fallen, 1817) (TUATAV et aL 1967, 1972,DOZGONE~ et aL 1982, ZEREN & DOZGONE~ 1983, 1984, ZEREN 1985, OZGOR 1986,CLAUBEN & LUCAS 1988, HAvAT & ALAOOLU 1990, YUMRUKTEPE & UVGUN 1994, UVGUNet aL 1995, SARIBIVIK & AKTA~ 1996), The remaining six species belong to the subgenusPGl'agus: P. a/bi/rons (Fallen, 1817) (DOZGONE§ et aL 1982), P. antoinettae Goeldlin deTiefenau & Lucas, 1981 (GOELDLlN DE TIEFENAU & LUCAS 1981), P. bie%r (Fabricius,1794) (OZGOR 1986, CLAUBEN & LUCAS 1988, HAVAT & ALAOGLU 1990, UVGUN et aL

A further name "Paragus nigellus Goeldlin" was introduced by ERKIN (1983) as ''Newspecies for Science" based on specimens from the province ofIzmir. But no description of"P. nigellus" is known to us, and we regard this name as a "nomen nudum".

A new species of the subgenus Paragus in material of Syrphidae from North-East Turkeyis described below, and a further nine species of Paragus s. I. are recorded for the Turkishfauna.

Description of species

Ecology. P. kopdagensis n. sp.was collected in meadows and pastures with marshy areasand a very diverse ground vegetation, rich in flowering plants, at altitudes of 2250-2350 m.Flight period: 28.VI.-12.VIII.

Discussion

Specimens (males and females) ofP. kopdagensis n. sp. with an entirely black scutellum aresimilar to the Palaearctic species Paragus punctulatus Zetterstedt, 1838 and Paragusabsidiatus Goeldlin de Tiefenau, 1971, and key to these species in GOELDLIN (1976). Theymay be distinguished as follows:
