A News Corporation Dusit Worldwide Company Limited Volume 5 : SUMMER 2010 In early 1970 when Sharp was releasing the pocket calculator in Japan, whilst Richard Nixon was seated in the Oval Office and Brazil won their 3 rd World Cup, a new hotel of distinction opened its doors to the world. The hotel was a grand hotel towering 22 stories high, made even taller by its golden spire and crowned the tallest building in the Kingdom of Thailand. It was of course, Dusit Thani Bangkok. To this day, Dusit Thani is the hotel of choice for corporate leaders, heads of states, royalty and celebrities, as the dream lives on for the company’s founder, Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui in creating a hotel that would be the pride of the nation for generations to come. As the epicentre of Bangkok society and the city’s most memorable events, Dusit Thani Bangkok continues to set the stage for inspired occasions. In the past 40 years Dusit Thani Bangkok has constantly reinvented and re-inspired the city with its accommodation choices from modern room redesigns to the magnificent Thai Heritage Suites, as well as dining standards that constantly keep the hotel at the forefront of exceptional culinary experiences and awards, especially with the rooftop D’Sens French Restaurant, the hotel’s crowning glory. In the 1960’s, Thanpuying travelled the globe to find an architect to design a hotel that would ensure an everlasting legacy of innovative Thai design with the required western influence, to attract the world’s travelling elite to the shores of Thailand. It was a Japanese firm, with Yozo Shibata of Yozo Shibata and Associates (later the KKS Group) that was selected to take on this very important project and firmly established the iconic design, that is still today, highly acclaimed around the world. Other hotel projects of the firm include Four Seasons Tokyo and Shangri-La Singapore. Many hotels have opened since in the City of Angels, but it is Dusit Thani Bangkok’s continuing pride of place opposite King Rama VI’s statue, the country’s illustrious forebear who named Dusit Thani and sought to create the legendary utopian town, that ensures its unique promise to its guests. “Dusit” in Thai is the fourth heaven and “Thani” is a city. The concept of Dusit Thani, the city in the fourth heaven, was proposed by King Rama VI in 1918 as an ideal state of human well-being, a model city of freedom and happiness, the perfect foundation on which to build the city’s most memorable hotel where the brand promise continues with ‘using the gifts of heaven to create heaven on earth.’ In 1925, King Rama VI made a further donation of Saladaeng to be a public park. This park is the vast Lumphini Park, named after the birth place of Lord Buddha, Lumphini in Nepal. The King Rama VI Monument stands at the gate to Lumphini Park just across from Dusit Thani. The land on which Dusit Thani Bangkok stands was once the site of a nobleman’s mansion. Thanpuying’s legacy to the Kingdom of Thailand will live on forever and Dusit Thani Bangkok’s golden pinnacle spire will be the guiding light for many years to come. It will be a beacon for Dusit International’s expansion as Thanpuying’s dream becomes reality to introduce gracious, warm and sincere Thai hospitality around the world. Since the Licensing and Consulting Agreement between Dusit Thani Public Company Limited and Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) has been signed in December 2008, Dusit Thani College (DTC) and LPU has successfully designed and developed a collaborative curriculum in hospitality education for all four campuses of LPU that include Manila, Batangas, Cavite and Laguna. Faculty training, facilities improvement and instructional materials development will be undertaken to support the provision of quality instruction.

LPU is the leading Hospitality and Restaurant Management University in the country with an accredited status. The agreement has made Lyceum a globally competitive university mainly because there are only a few schools that have such agreements with an international and well-known brand like Dusit Thani.

Veera Pardpattanapanich, Rector of Dusit Thani College, emphasised, “A quality education comes from four main factors including an outstanding curriculum, an experienced and competent faculty, a state-of-the-art and standard facility, and excellent student activities.”

Further, Dusit Thani Manila will provide preferential practicum training for students as well as employment opportunities for graduates of the various LPU campuses. On the other hand, LPU faculty are also benefiting from the ongoing DTC workshops and seminars.

Collectively, the various campuses have around 12,000 students enrolled in HRM and Tourism programmes. Standardisation was undertaken to ensure that all students going through the LPU-DTC curriculum would have the same conceptual and competency skills and would carry comparable qualities, attitude and skills when employed in any tourism and hospitality related sector. This is the first move for a Thai hospitality institution like Dusit Thani College to successfully bring Thai hospitality education to be developed at an international higher education level.

Typically found on the Southeast Asian continent, mangosteen is a fairly small tropical fruit, known as the Queen of the Fruits for its many appealing taste and health benefits and can be harvested only once or twice a year.

The mangosteen is round in figure, with sweet white pulp in deep reddish purple rind. Its delicious flesh can be described as sweet and

refreshing tangy flavour with high nutrient density, whilst its peel contains generous amounts of antioxidant and antibacterial properties as well as condensed tannin that are proved to be beneficial in keeping the skin healthy.

Devarana Spa uses mangosteen peel extract as the key ingredient in its specially formulated Mangosteen Peel Body Scrub. Packed with natural polishing grains and pure natural active ingredients, this rich creamy scrub gently exfoliates dead cells, provides deep hydration, removes impurities that dull the skin and brightens the overall complexion. The fruity formula also helps tighten skin pores, prepares skin for better absorption of subsequent body products and gently decreases wrinkle lines.

The Mangosteen Peel Body Scrub will leave the skin with renewed clarity and vibrancy and give a refreshing boost to the mood and energy levels.

AWARDS dusitD2 baraquda pattaya joins ‘The Luxury List 2010’ Dusit Princess Korat receives

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket Gears up for MICE

Coming to Manila in July 2010, Dusit Thani Manila opens its doors to Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the theatrical phenomenon and second longest running musical in history as its official residence in Manila. This Broadway Musicale will feature the world-renowned Filipino singer and stage actress Lea Salonga who will play the role of Grizabella, together with its international cast to be flown all the way from Australia.

CATS, based on the book of poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot, was named Best Musical in the Olivier and Tony Awards, and has been presented in over 300 cities worldwide. In Manila, it will run for four weeks starting on 24 July 2010, with a gala night and weekend matinees, at the Cultural Centre of the Philippines.

Early in his career, while working at a hotel in the UK, James Robert Wilson and his family took in two young girls whose father had recently perished in the Chernobyl disaster. He and the rest of the hotel staff celebrated Christmas with those children, and it profoundly impacted him.

In 2000, Wilson took over as General Manager at Pathumwan Princess, Bangkok, where he led staff in a campaign to support a small hill tribe school in Mae Jaem, a rural area in northern Thailand, and collaborate with the school to bring the students with the best grades to stay at Pathumwan Princess over Christmas.

That experience was the birth of the Tree for Life campaign at Pathumwan Princess, raising awareness of the need to replant trees while also supporting physically disabled children in Thailand. This is now an annual Christmas event at the hotel.

The 45-year-old Wilson in August 2009 joined Dusit Thani Dubai, where he leads the hotel’s Dusit Smiles campaign, which raises money for children in Kenya who are born with facial deformities to get surgeries to help them live normal lives. Wilson hopes to implement a meaningful meeting programme at the hotel, in which guests would pay a premium to have meetings be either recycling-based, have a reduced carbon footprint or use only sustainable foods. The premium cost would be donated to Operation Smile.

“People really do care it is just [a matter of] creating the awareness and making them understand. Being a hotelier gives you a platform in a very positive way to show people” Wilson says.

The hotel General Manager, Chatchawal Supachayanont presented her with a bouquet amid the warm celebratory applause from everyone.

Before departing to the airport, she told the five-star resort, “I’ve had a great time and a great week as well.

Dusit Thani Pattaya was selected as the official hotel sponsor of the Honda - PTT LPGA for two consecutive years. Miyazato’s fans awaited her arrival after hearing about the results of the final round at Siam Country Club and, as soon as she stepped into the hotel lobby, fans and guests took turns in congratulating her. The hotel General Manager, Chatchawal Supachayanont presented her with a bouquet amid the warm celebratory applause from everyone.

Before departing to the airport, she told the five-star resort, “I’ve had a great time and a great week as well. Knowing that I have a lot of Japanese fans here helped me a lot in winning the tournament, they served as my inspiration.” Supachayanont was joined by Surang Prempree, Managing Director of TV Channel 7, in wishing all the female golf players a safe and pleasant trip. The participants expressed thanks and appreciation to all the sponsors, especially to Dusit Thani Pattaya for what they described as their home away from home throughout the tournament.

relaxed resort ambience and the welcoming hospitality of its staff and management led by Supachayanont.

In early 1970 when Sharp was releasing the pocket calculator in Japan, whilst Richard Nixon was seated in the Oval Office and Brazil won their 3rd World Cup, a new hotel of distinction opened its doors to the world.

The concept of Dusit Thani, the city in the fourth heaven, was proposed by King Rama VI in 1918 as an ideal state of human well-being, a model city of freedom and happiness, the perfect foundation on which to build the city’s most memorable hotel where the brand promise continues with ‘using the gifts of heaven to create heaven on earth.’

In 1925, King Rama VI made a further donation of Saladaeng to be a public park.

We celebrate together Dusit Thani Bangkok’s 40th anniversary and wish the grand dame well for many years to come!

The tallest building in the city for at least a few months after its opening in the late 1960s (opened in 1970). Dusit Thani Bangkok is a rare project, reflecting deco and modernist influences in a way that is distinctly Thai. Striking at night, when the geometrical, gold lined frames that run up the building are lit-up, the hotel is symbolic to Bangkok residents because it is locally owned and was one of the first buildings in the city to make a high-rise statement. For expats the fusion of Eastern elements in a Western modernist context is the point of conversation. Note the influence of Buddhist architecture in the portico like frames and the shape of the structure.
