1 Education Bureau Graduates Highest Number of Inmates with GED’s EVER To my fellow co-workers, I would like to thank you for the warm reception and the willingness to work with Mr. Gregg Marcantel and I during these difficult times. Transition and change in management is always difficult not only to the people in the organization but to the new management team coming in. In the short time we have been at the helm we found that the Corrections Deparment has many good and talented people in their ranks. Governor Martinez gave us certain mandates that we are quickly working on. One of them was to find a permanent Cabinet Secretary for her consideration. I hope to have names to her in short order. Gregg and I divided several items of importance to look at and come up with a game plan to address these items. I made it a priority to meet with all the Wardens and Region Managers to get their input and suggestions as soon as possible, which I have accomplished. I have listened to their concerns and suggestions and I am in the process of implementing many of them. We met with Union leaders and found them very willing to work with us, which was very refreshing to me personally. I know that we will not always see eye- to-eye on things but as long as we have open communication, hopefully we can compromise when appropriate. I have mentioned many times before that in my opinion the employee is the greatest commodity in any organization and it is so true in this organization. So trust me when I say I have always valued employees of any organization that I have had the privilege to manage. R.I.P. To my fellow co-workers,

I would like to thank you for the warm reception and the willingness to work with Mr.

I know that we will not always see eye-to-eye on things but as long as we have open communication, hopefully we can compromise when appropriate.

I have mentioned many times before that in my opinion the employee is the greatest commodity in any organization and it is so true in this organization. So trust me when I say I have always valued employees of any organization that I have had the privilege to manage.

302 inmates graduated with their GEDs this year with help from the Education Bureau. This is the highest number of GED graduates NMCD has had in the past ten years.

Statewide total $2146.38

July 14, the Human Resources Bureau organized fundraising efforts for the American Red Cross “Dollars for Disaster’s Campaign”. The campaign was a statewide effort, led by Governor Martinez and the American Red Cross to raise much needed money to replenish the American Red Cross after the devastating fires that burned all around New Mexico and the surrounding area.

Six correctional officers from Freistaat Bayern Justiz and Vollzug Justiz, Germany, visited the Penitentiary of New Mexico on September 15 to see how an American prison operates, and came away with an appreciation of the value of a modern facility. One of the officers said that his prison was actually an old abbey, and because it is an historical and cultural building, they would never be allowed to put up a chain link fence with razor ribbon. Their security upgrades are limited to the installation of new cameras. They also had the opportunity to examine an inmate file and were impressed at the level of detailed information included in the file.

About 60 percent of inmates they work with are actually Russians who flooded into Germany after the fall of the Berlin wall, presenting a significant challenge to correctional officers.

Correctional Officers from Germany like the NMCD (and wish they had facilities like ours!)

This is my philosophy, “I take care of my employees and they in turn will take care of the organization I manage”. With that said, please don’t ever mistake my kindness for weakness.

For the time I am here I give you my personal commitment that I will do what I can to strengthen this wonderful organization and the leadership that you yearn for. I will not only keep an open door policy but an open mind to listen to all employees and their suggestions.

I lead by example and try and keep myself above reproach and expect that of my managers. I am human and I do make mistakes and I will apologize in advance for any mistakes that I have made since being here or will make in the future.

It is indeed an honor and a privilege to work with you during this time of transition.

Sincerely,

Alfonso (Al) Solis
