February 2018
A Note from Pastor Al Cassel
Dear People of Peace:
I’ve always associated February with Valentine’s Day. I believe it dates back to the
fact that Valentine’s Day was one of two holidays we could celebrate with an official
party in our classroom in elementary school. I would look forward to the last hour of
school being a time to eat cupcakes and be silly along with my classmates in the midst
of a typically dreary wintertime.
This year, Ash Wednesday is on Valentine’s Day. I realize some may find this ironic.
Restaurants will be filled with couples affirming their adoration of the other, while
some of us will gather in churches to acknowledge just how ‘deplorable’ we are.
I, however, believe that the two go hand in hand. True love recognizes our
imperfection and makes a choice for love nonetheless. True love is not something we
earn or deserve, but without regard is a gift that is freely shared. True love is witnessed
in the pathway of Lent, as we walk alongside a Jesus who sacrifices all so we might
begin to know how great God’s love is for us.
St. Valentine was a Christian martyr who chose love over the rule of law. As we begin
our journey of Lent, we invite you into a journey of love and not a rule of law. Many
associate Lent with disciplines of denial, but we only engage in acts of denial so we can
focus upon care for others and not just ourselves.
So, may this Lent be a time when we are generous in our love for one
another, as we remember the Jesus who was gracious in his love
for us. Indeed, this Ash Wednesday we can celebrate a
special love, for God has sent us his personal Valentine,
and his name is Jesus.
Peace,

Meetup is an organization/app/website that facilitates the connecting or gathering of
people of similar interests. It allows them to coordinate events such as a hike in the
mountains or a book club or vegan cooking. We are looking for people at Peace
who have an interest or love who would work with us to create Meetup events they
would like to do. As an example, if you are looking for others to hike Thunderbird
Hill on a Sunday afternoon, let’s create a Meetup and have others from Peace or the
community at large join you. If you want to offer basic auto mechanics, let’s create
a Meetup. The possibilities are endless!

A Note from the Parish Administrator by Lesley Moosman
It’s February! Time to share the love in our hearts by taking
time to appreciate the special people in our lives. Let me start
with YOU—the volunteers and people of Peace! You are SO
special, SO loved, and SO appreciated! THANK YOU for
sharing God’s love by your involvement with ministries at
Peace to share Christ with the world and grow disciples for
Jesus! You are awesome, cool, lovely, and blessed to be a
blessing!
In January, Family Promise was a super, amazing experience of
sharing the love in our hearts. This month Faith-Full
Wednesdays are back with food and fun for all ages. I hope
you will join us!
During Lent, we typically give up something. Here is a radical
thought. This Lenten season, instead of giving up something
we love like chocolate, pizza, or one hour of social media; let’s
give up something that has been weighing us down and share
God’s love through our connections with others—at Peace, at
school and work, in the grocery store, and at the gas station,
through social media, in our communities, across the valley,
and throughout the world! Happy February! Happy
Valentine’s Day! God bless you this Lenten season!
Need help getting connected? Call the church office or contact
[email protected]. We are happy to help!
Experiencing Difficulties?
A Stephen Minister can help. There are times in our lives when every single one of us
experiences difficulties. God never intended for us to go
through these experiences alone. This is when a Stephen
Minister can help. Stephen Ministers are members of our
congregation who have received training to minister to people
experiencing a crisis or going through a difficult time in their
life. A Stephen Minister will meet with you privately and
confidentially to listen, care, encourage, support and reflect
Christ’s presence in your life. We currently have Stephen
Ministers available. If you would like to learn about having a
Stephen Minister, or you know someone who could benefit
from a Stephen Minister (inside or outside our congregation)
contact Pastor Al or Cindy Staggs at [email protected].
Graceful Giving
We acknowledge everything in life is a gift. It is a gift that
God freely shares with us, and in turn God gives us various
opportunities to multiply the gift. While we all desire to be a
generous people, there are circumstances that undercut that
desire. Sometimes this causes us to feel bad because we would
like to do more.
A simple solution you might want to try—physically set aside
$1/day in a piggy bank. At the end of the month there is $30.
Decide on a specific ministry or cause at the end of the month
to bless with your gift. Thirty dollars may not seem like much,
but if every member of an ELCA church in Arizona did
likewise it would equal $250,000 a month or $3 million a year!
If every ELCA member in the US did this it would be $12.5
million per month, or $150 million a year!
Dear friends, since God so loved us,
we also ought to love one another. ~ 1 John 4:11
Council President’s Report by Wendy Schulz Welcome to 2018 and another year of Generations,
Generosity, and Grace which you make possible at Peace.
The outpouring of all types of gifts during our week of
hosting four families with Family Promise (an ecumenical
organization helping families experiencing homelessness)
was much more than most of us imagined it would be.
Members of Peace of all ages and four different Girl Scout
Troops, who share our building, involved themselves with
hosting and befriending these families. Naturally, the
experience served and supported the folks from Family
Promise. However, the gifts received from serving others
were the happy surprise from the Holy Spirit. Everyone
used their time, treasure, and talents to serve others: quilts,
beds, bedding, meals, games, fun, conversation, and new
friends made with our guests as well as with members of
Peace. Serving others is fulfilling!
In this New Year, I would like to urge you to take stock of
your gifts and talents and see if there is somewhere in
Peace where you can find fulfillment through serving! If
you already know what you like to do and are good at it,
just call the office and ask for Lesley Moosman. As our
Parish Administrator, she is working toward creating teams
for ministry. Not sure about your gifts? You can take the
Spiritual Gifts Assessment Tool on the ELCA website at
http://www.elca.org/Our-Work/Congregations-and-Synods/
Faith-Practices/Spiritual-Renewal/Assessment-Tools.
Congregation Meeting
We meet on Sunday, February 18, following the 10:00 am
service. At our meeting we’ll review reports from the
previous year as well as elect new members to our church
council. Please look for updates in our Sunday worship
announcements.
Empowering Peace
Your generous gifts enable Peace to be a church that exists
for our world and not just for ourselves. Christmas is over,
and the bills are due, but we are encouraged by your regular
support of the ministry of this congregation. As is true for
all of us, the expense of ministry continues to grow, yet we
are grateful for your continued growth in giving as well.
We know that all of us want to support the work of our
church. We are a part of this congregation because we
support its mission. A useful tool to aid in fulfilling our
intentions is through electronic giving—simple, safe,
secure, and steadfast. Whether you are on vacation or in
the pew, you can be assured your gift will be making a
difference in someone’s life. You can go to our webpage
or contact the office to sign up. Thanks again for being a
people who are committed to a church that changes lives.
Endowment Fund
Peace Lutheran Church has an endowment fund set aside to
enable us to extend our ministry in directions unforeseen in
regular budgeting. You do not need to be a millionaire to
set aside a gift that will continue to support your church. It
can be as easy as taking out a life insurance policy and
making the church a beneficiary. Talk with your financial
advisor about how you might leave a legacy through Peace.
Children’s Ministry
Young Hearts Theater Group
Rehearsals for our new play resume Sunday, February 11,
from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the Sanctuary! This group is open to
all children and teens of our church and community! Our two
productions for this year will be Cinderella and The Lion, the
Witch, and the Wardrobe! If you are interested in helping
with our drama ministry, please email [email protected].
Crisis Nursery Donations
We would like to say thank you to our church for the
generous donations during Advent for the West Valley Child
Crisis Nursery in Glendale. We received and donated
diapers, wipes, clothing, blankets, shampoo, powder, soap,
food, and other miscellaneous items. On Christmas Eve our
children brought the items forward and placed them around
the manger as the Christmas story was read.
We received a thank you message from Linda Cook, Director
of Development. They also shared a nice thank you to Peace
on their Facebook Page.
We are so very grateful for the generosity of your church
members, and grateful for the blessing!
Our foster and adoption families will benefit greatly from
your kindness.
Warmest regards,
Linda Cook| Director of Development

Preschool Ministry
Registration Is Open
Peace Lutheran Preschool registration is open for summer and
fall. We are now registering 2- to 5-year-olds for our summer
camp and the 2018-2019 school year. Stop by the school, call
623-972-1076, or email [email protected]. Spaces are
limited. We have one class for each age group. We have
experienced teachers, a proven curriculum, and we are
accredited by the Evangelical Lutheran Education
Association.
January Was a Very Busy Month
The Lions Club conducted a free vision screening for our
students. After the screening, five students were referred to
eye doctors for a full vision check.
Our new banners and tent signs arrived and have been placed
around the campus. The banners and signs feature our new
logo. The first week the tent signs were out, we held two
tours of the school. One parent noticed the sign at Union
Hills and the other parent spotted our sign at Bell Road.
The new shed for the playground was also put in place in
January. It is larger than the old shed and looks fabulous. A
huge THANK YOU to Mark Clist for volunteering his time to
build the shed and put it in place on the playground.
Looking Ahead to February
Brittany Anderson, a dental hygienist and the mom of one of
our Preschoolers, will be teaching our students about caring
for their teeth.
Valentine’s Day parties will be held February 13 and 14.
The staff has In-Service Training on February 19. The school
will be closed for President’s Day.

Centering Prayer
If you are looking for a way to slow down and be more
present for God, throughout Lent we will be offering an
opportunity to practice this discipline following our
midweek worship service.
Adult Education Opportunities:
You are invited to make spiritual growth a goal for this
year. There are various avenues and opportunities.
Monday 10:00 am
Pastor leads an informal conversation around the Scripture
appointed for the following Sunday. It always begins with,

and join the discussion. There is always room for another
voice in the conversation.
Thursday 6:00 am

magazine Bible study appointed for
the month.
Are you interested in a couple’s
study in the evening? Pastor Al and

at Peace to share some of the opportunities we have as a
congregation to serve a population who has much to offer
as well as to receive.

however, your gifts will go towards World Vision’s 30
Hour Famine to raise funds for the hungry. So, be sure to
load up your pockets with loose change (and dollars!) to
drop in the containers our Youth will have Super Bowl

Family Promise Week
We are so grateful to all of you for your generous
donations for Family Promise! Our first host week
(December 31 to January 6) was an amazing experience of
sharing the love and the light of Christ with those in need.
Below are a few comments from those who participated:
Thank you for all your hard work during the Family
Promise week. It was a true pleasure to experience the
heartfelt love and compassion the volunteers provided to
the families. As new members, this was our first
experience watching Peace at work! It’s beautiful.
We’re proud to call Peace our home church.
- Jodi & Steve Kinkade
It's always been hard for me to pass people on the street
asking for help. We've all heard stories of people who
abuse the generosity of others, so I hesitate to give in that
situation. Family Promise provides a way to personally
support families who are in a tough spot and working hard
to become independent again. In addition to making new
friends by playing with the kids and chatting with the
adults, it's also been a great way for me to meet others in
the church. It's wonderful to see love in action! - Marie
Kirschstein
I made food for hungry tummies, but I like to think I fed
their souls as well. What an amazing and satisfying
project. Blessings all around. - Kathy Neary
I went to the family promise training meeting we had at
church because I was interested in it, but not sure it was for
me. I went home, thought and prayed about it, and decided
I would volunteer. I helped with meals and cleaned up in
the evenings. The best part was getting to know the
families. I am so glad I took part in this experience.
It was so rewarding and such a blessing. I hope to do
this again in the future. - Jennifer Primera
Thank you for having us! We really enjoyed being a
part of this experience and wish all the families the very
best. This was especially meaningful for our scout who was
formerly homeless. - Tressa, Girl Scout Troop 1557
I just wanted to say our troop found family promise to be
an amazing opportunity for our girls to give back to their
community. Thank you and
blessings to all of the families we
had the opportunity to meet.
Thanks! - Naseem, Girl Scout
Troop 2104

Lent – a Journey of the Heart! Originally, Lent was the final period of preparation
for candidates who would be baptized at Easter.
Those who wished to be known as followers of
Christ were required to go through two years of
training, culminating in a 40-day period of fasting, prayer,
and service.
After the church was adopted into the Roman Empire, Lent
became a time for all Christians to prepare themselves for
the coming celebration of Easter by engaging in similar
disciplines. Over time, Lent was associated with the idea
of depriving ourselves as a form of spiritual discipline and
this included meeting on Wednesdays for a simple meal
and special service.
Lent begins on that first Wednesday with the imposition of
ashes as a reminder of our frail humanity and the need for
God’s grace. Throughout Lent we will offer a service of
contemplation and reflection in the style of Taizé. Lent
concludes with Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good
Friday as we focus upon Christ’s passion.
Ash Wednesday February 14: Services at noon and 7:00 pm
Lenten Services February 21—March 21 at 6:00 pm (Style of
Taizé)
Maundy Thursday March 29: Services at noon and 7:00 pm
Good Friday March 30: Services at noon and 7:00 pm
Lenten Taizé Worship From February 21 through March 21, we will offer a
simple half-hour service on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm. Taizé
is a style of contemplative worship that began in France.
The music is simple and repetitive by design so our minds
as well as our hearts will be free to enter into the presence
of God.
Our theme for Lent is A Journey of the Heart. There will
be music, prayer, reading of scriptures, as well as a series
of personal reflections upon our theme found in Jesus’
command in John 13. We invite you to share in a simple
meal at 5:15 pm and then join us for this service of Taizé.
Worthy Worship
As we bring the season of Epiphany to a close, we begin a
journey toward Jerusalem alongside Jesus. In each case
John is seeking to give us fresh awareness of the meaning
and purpose of Jesus’ ministry.

Cantata Choir
Remember how GREAT the cantata was at Christmas-time. You can be a
part of our Palm Sunday Cantata (March 25) by participating in the choir
starting NOW! The choir rehearses on Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 8:30
pm. Come for the music. Come for the fellowship. Come!
Support the Youth Group
On March 2, our youth group will
be participating in World Vision's
30 Hour Famine. We don't think
it's right that nearly 9,500 kids are
dying every day because of
hunger—so we're doing something about it through World
Vision's 30 Hour Famine!
How the Famine works:
1. Students LEARN the truth about global hunger and
discover what God wants us all to do about it.
2. We RAISE FUNDS to fight hunger (that's where YOU
come in).
3. We grow closer to God and each other as we FAST FOR
30 HOURS.
4. LIVES ARE CHANGED because of the money we've
raised!
Support a student and help the hungry at the same time:
This is your chance to encourage a student in their walk with
God and their ability to make a difference in the world. It's
also your opportunity to respond to God's heart for the poor.
Plus, your tax-deductible donation goes a long way.
Donate to a specific team member to help them earn awesome
rewards and encourage them to keep raising awareness of
global hunger. You can also donate on our team page, but if
you want an individual student to get credit, you must click
on their name and donate on their personal page.
Just $40 will help feed and care for a child for a month!
To join our team or make a donation to help us reach our
goal, visit this link: https://youth.worldvision.org/index.cfm?

Blood Drive Coming Up!
United Blood Services will be on campus on
Wednesday, February 28, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.
Please consider donating a life-saving unit of
blood.
Contrary to what many believe, there are very few restrictions
that would keep an individual from donating. And it doesn’t
hurt! Youth ages 16 and 17 may donate with parent/
guardian’s written consent. If you have any questions about
whether or not you would be eligible to donate, contact Nurse
Cindy.
Walk-in donors are very welcome, but appointments are
recommended. If you would like to make an appointment,
contact Nurse Cindy or you can do it on your own at
www.bloodhero.com. The whole process takes
approximately 45 minutes to an hour. You will need to bring
a picture ID.
We fell very short of our target donations during our last
event, but I know that we will reach our target number of
donors this time! Remember, your blood could save
someone’s life. Be a Hero! Donate!

Or Current Resident/Occupant
I often get questions from our senior adults about resources
related to caregiving, medical facilities, housing, etc. In this
state there are excellent resources available to assist our
senior adults with just about anything! Here are a few:
DES - DIVISION ON AGING AND ADULT SERVICES - www.azdes.gov/daas caregiver resources, 888-737-7494; adult protective services, 877-767-2385;
Medicare counseling - 800-432-4040; energy/telephone assistance - 800-582-5706
AREA AGENCIES ON AGING - www.azlinks.gov.
Information and referral case management/in-home services, caregiver support, benefits and options, counseling.
(This website has tons of useful information and links to many, many other services.)
AZ MEDICAID - AHCCCS, ALTCS - www.azahcccs.gov - 602-417-4000 - 800.654.8713.
In-home care, nursing home care, and acute health care.
BENEVILLA - www.Benevilla.org - 623-584-4999.
Programs and services offered by Benevilla are: life enrichment programs, caregiver support, referral services,
home delivered meals, grocery shopping, transportation, handyman services, and more.
DUET OF ARIZONA - www.duetaz.org - 602-274-5022.
Duet helps older adults and their families cope with challenges related to aging. From getting groceries and rides
to the doctor, to health promotion activities and support groups, to grandparents raising grandkids. Duet is a non-
profit, interfaith organization that has been serving older adults in greater Phoenix since 1981.
If you would like more resources, contact Nurse Cindy at [email protected] or 623 972-6785.
