Those that made it to the Christmas Parade of Lights were treated to yet another fun family event and a special thanks to those that participated in the event and all of their hard work. We also want to thank you for all of the donations made for the Toys For Tots Toy Drive. We truly have the best boaters and this once again was shown with the best results we have had since starting the Drive across all California Yacht Marinas. This is an event that we can’t do without you and your generosity is much appreciated. With the holidays now behind us there are sure to be many fun things to come in the new year whether it be a fireworks show for New Year’s, getting out on the water or just spending time with loved ones. And of course with birthdays it can at times be tough to find the right gift for the boater in your life. Check out some ideas on page 3 and be sure to keep a copy of this issue for reference for when you need that perfect gift! Gerald Thomas, Kevin Ketchum & Bill Thomas Fall Is Here... Make sure yours are in good shape. Regarding electrical cords and heaters please note that your power cord needs to be number 10 wire and it has to run from the power pedestal on the dock to the boat. Having a pig tail and a household extension cord plugged into it does not satisfy electrical code nor does it satisfy the fire department when they inspect the marina for fire safety. If you put a free standing heater in your boat please note the following 4 tips from BoatUS: 1. Turn if off: Never leave a portable electric heater on while you are away from the boat or when you go to bed. 2. “Tip Over” switch is a must: Many portable heaters are not intended to be used for unstable locations and don’t have wide bases needed to keep them upright when another boat’s wake strikes your boat. Use only an electric heater with a tip-over switch that will shut off the heater automatically if it gets knocked over. (continued on page 4)

Note From CarolynOur second annual Christmas Party with White Elephant gift exchange was, by anyone’s standards, a huge success this year with almost double the attendance of last year. The “white elephants” were of a really fun variety ranging from liqueur chocolates to an “adults only” gift wrapped in plain brown paper. The competition for stealing the good gifts was intense. I noticed someone had

been eyeballing the gift of her choice for a long time, hoping all the while no one else would steal it first. The moment it was her turn to pick she made a beeline to steal it and since it was the last time it could be stolen it was all hers. Following the gift exchange, we raffled three nice gifts provided by CYM. Then, a few white elephant gifts found their way back to the raffle table and were won by the successful ticket holders. In addition to the original prizes and donated gifts, Susan Johnson donated two tickets to an excursion on the Bill of Rights which last I saw was going to be used by Betty Gill and Larry Summerville the very next night to view the annual Christmas Parade of Lights.

Speaking of the annual parade of lights, this was the 43rd annual parade with more than 80 boats participating in the Children’s Stories theme. My sailing team and I join the parade every year as our team Christmas party as we watch from the warmth and comfort of a room at the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island. I have to say this year’s was one of the absolute best. The night was clear as a bell, the boats’ decorations were dazzling and innovative, and the downtown skyline was the perfect backdrop. The assortment of yachts included a large sport fishing vessel all lit up as “Who Ville” from Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” a few dinghies displaying Santa Claus and his sleigh, boats featuring a dancing Batman, “The Wizard of Oz” and an homage to the movie “Frozen.” My personal favorite came from right here at California Yacht Marina. Doug Villepique’s Spindrift 49 “”Kanumera” glittered with lights on the entire hull and the rig was decorated with red and green Christmas trees both fore and aft. It must not have been just my personal favorite as it was featured on the front page of the next day’s Union Tribune. In addition to the brilliant glitter of all the boats, we were entertained with a well-rehearsed choir singing Christmas carols from a beautifully decorated old wooden schooner. A lone male voice sang “White Christmas” over a loud speaker, other vessels blared out Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson both featuring Christmas carols. You really can’t beat Christmas on the water in San Diego. It’s a definite don’t miss for next year.

Hi Marina Tenants,

The Thanksgiving leftovers are gone, the tree is up, and I didn’t fall off the ladder putting the lights on my house. I consider that a successful start to the holiday season!

We’re trying to catch up on the maintenance this winter. You’ll see our maintenance staff and contractors doing repairs to the docks, buildings and grounds – trimming bushes, strapping up utility pipes, painting, and anything else that comes up.

If you have a bike in the bike rack near the restroom, please contact the marina office and let us know. I’d like to make sure that all of the bikes on the rack belong to current tenants.

Thank you all for being here. Have a nice holiday and Happy New Year!

Frank
