From the Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ,

Every year, I propose to the parish spiritual reading for Advent and Lent. As you know, I am al-

ways insistent that we demonstrate our Catholic faith by being countercultural through not antici-

pating ChristMass and celebrating Advent. One way to stop the madness of the secular holiday

season is by setting aside more time for prayer and spiritual reading. This year, I want to mix it up

a bit.

Men: I would like for you to read That Nothing May Be Lost: Reflections on Catholic Doctrine and

Devotion by Father Paul Scalia. Fr Scalia is a priest of the Arlington diocese and son of recently

deceased Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia. This wide ranging book talks about the role of

grace, the sacraments, Mary and so much more in the life of Christian discipleship.

Women: I invite you to read Daring to Hope: Finding God’s Goodness in the Broken and the Beau-

tiful by Katie Majors. Katie is a young American Protestant missionary who founded Amazima

Ministries to spread the Gospel in Uganda. As a single woman, she adopted 14 orphans! She

recounts her incredible story of God’s faithfulness in a unique vocation of love and how she

found a Christian helpmate in holy marriage.

Married and Engaged Couples: I want to challenge you. I would like for you to read your

book during Advent, and then in the new year, swap books with your partner. And I want you,

as a New Years Resolution, already to schedule two date nights to go out and have a drink or a

coffee and talk about what you’ve read. I know it sounds silly, but I think when our couples

can get together with a spiritual project and share their insights reading, it can be very power-

ful.

You know how I am fond of classical Catholic spiritual literature. These two books are recent

publications, and one written by a Protestant. But both works have a lot to nourish the soul. Ad-

vent is a time of new beginnings, and these two spiritual books have the possibility of really raising

a lot of good discussions!

suggested title: Soul of the Apostolate

The Soul of the Apostolate was the

favorite book of Pope St. Pius X.

Matthew Arnold presents excerpts

from a timeless classic that shows

how prayer is the soul of every

work for God, and is absolutely

critical for apostolic success. This

foundational work on the spiritual life will help you

understand that the Lord first desires prayer, and

then our works, and will help you to avoid serious

spiritual mistakes.

Happenings & Needs

The Catholic Church recognizes that life exists from the moment of conception. Unfortunately, for those

families who have suffered the loss of a pregnancy there is a lack of recognition for that precious life. Many

times it is the recognition that can provide closure and comfort to those who have lost. Prince of Peace

Catholic Church would like to welcome all families who are experiencing or have experienced a miscarriage

to request a "Certificate of Precious Life." This certificate would be personalized for you and your child.

Our hope is to not only provide families with some closure, but to acknowledge and always remember that

your child, no matter how small, existed and was a gift from God. If interested or if you have questions,

please contact Angie Zuendt at 330-221-9284 or [email protected].

Our parish school children celebrated All Saints Day by dressing up as a favorite saint! Then, placed prayers inside blue

balloons (in honor of the Blessed Mother) and released them into the sky! It was a wonderful time for parents and kids!

Logo items are for sale including our t-shirt ($8)

and 24-oz Tervis tumbler ($15). Contact Angela

Calabro to purchase!

Prince of Peace Catholic School is celebrating its 15th anniversary! And, we’re ex-

cited to celebrate with you! On Sunday, 12 November from 10.30a-12n, join us for

birthday treats (school foyer)

our Open House

kickoff to the Annual Fund

Also, stop by our table in the Narthex to pick up a folder filled with great informa-

tion about our Blue Ribbon School!

Happenings & Needs

Advent wreaths will be on sale in the Narthex the

weekend of 18-19 November. Advent prayers will be

printed in the bulletin during Advent. Stay tuned!

Our Angel Tree will be located again in the Narthex

starting in November. Please show your generosity

in adopting one of our Angel Tree Kids. If you take

an Angel Tree Card, sign your name and provide

your phone number on the sheet provided next to

the tree at our sign up table. Please purchase only

the items that are on the card (in fairness to other

kids that might be in the same family on a different

card) and provide gift receipts for clothing. Please do

not wrap gifts, instead put them in a gift bag with the

Angel Tree Card attached to them. Thank you in ad-

vance for your generosity.

On the weekend of 9-10 December, we will host a

display of beautiful Olivewood hand carvings from

Bethlehem for purchase. These carvings are made by

Christians of Bethlehem who rely on them as their

source of income. Due to the volatile situation and

hardships of their home country, Christians in the

Holy land used to be more than 30% of the popula-

tion, but are now fewer than 1.5%. By sending the

proceeds back to the craftsmen's families, this solu-

tion has allowed Christian families to remain in their

homeland and work at their traditional crafts. The

money flowing back to the families has allowed them

to maintain a stable way of life and allowed them to

work at what they know best.

Christmas trees and lights to decorate our Church,

Parish Office and Chapel are needed! If you, your

business or ministry would like to contribute, please

send a check for $125 to the Parish Secretary, Maria

Rauch and clearly mark “Christmas Tree” on the en-

velope and check. The sponsors of these trees will

be listed in the bulletin!

Please note that there will be no confession on

Wednesday, 22 November. There will be Mass at 9a

on Thursday, 23 November and 9a Friday, 24 No-

vember.

Compline (also known as Night Prayer) is the final church service (or office) of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours. The prayers are always the same, so it is very easy to learn! We will have Compline on Sundays during Advent at 7.30p in the Church, beginning 3 December. Prepare for the coming of the Prince of Peace in this special way!
