Dear Parishioners and Friends, As you may have heard at Mass last weekend, effec ve August 1, 2020, we will be resuming a Saturday evening vigil Mass for Sunday. It will be at 5:00 p.m. now, not 4:00 p.m. as it had been before the coronavirus outbreak. I know this is a change with mixed blessings in it for you. Many of you will be glad to get back to a Saturday evening vigil Mass, but may find the me a challenge for your schedules, but I believe the 5 p.m. me be er captures the sense of the evening leading into Sunday. I know some may complain that once daylight
savings me ends in November, they may not want to drive in the dark , but look at it this way: for the last three months you've been coming on Sundays, precisely as the Lord intended - and it's been good. Now I know, because I have heard it from some parishioners, (par cularly younger families in weekend sports) that having a Saturday vigil Mass is actually helpful when the children are playing games on weekends. Youth sports are not yet back at full steam, but I know that parents try to strike a balance between their children’s sports and an opportunity s ll give God His praise as a family. I also know that for families who need to travel to see loved ones out of town, a vigil Mass can be a very helpful way to worship God and s ll have me to make the trip. The 5 p.m. Vigil Mass may actually help some of you in that regard.
Vigil Masses were originally allowed in the 1950s and 1960s specifically for people who had to work on Sundays for the common good (like doctors and nurses, policemen, firemen, and so forth). Now, you know as well as I that just about everyone at a vigil Mass now doesn't fall into that category , and our experience during the coronavirus has shown that we can successfully get to Sunday Mass to worship the Lord. The Vigil Mass has become, not a need, but an item of simple convenience for us. I am allowing it to resume, for the good of our parishioners. Even with a 5 p.m. Vigil Mass, it won't help our doctors and nurses whose shi s generally run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. --this I know for a fact. In the interest of deepening our Eucharis c connec on and communion with the Lord Jesus through the Mass, however, it is advantageous to resume the Vigil Mass. Sunday Mass is s ll the be er op on - more perfectly aligned with the Lord's commandment to keep holy the Sabbath Day, the third commandment, but the Vigil Mass does sa sfy the requirement for us as Catholics. By adding the Vigil, we will have six weekend Masses. We plan to keep the 8 p.m. Mass. I have heard several nice words from the parishioners about the music at that Mass, and I know the a endance at that Mass con nues to grow. Also beginning August 1, I have decided to add an extra half hour for confessions on Saturdays. So, confessions on Saturdays will be from 3:00 p.m. un l 4:30 p.m. This will give us a longer opportunity for more confessions if the lines warrant. Many of you make good use of the sacrament of confession which is very gra fying to Father David, Father Cooper, and to me as priests. We are able to be the instruments of Christ's mercy to you through that sacrament, and, it is a sacrament that takes me. I believe the extra half hour on Saturdays will reap spiritual benefits for the whole parish. We will also resume the Tuesday night confession August 4th from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Finally, we will resume the 6 a.m. daily Mass on Thursday mornings beginning August 6th, on the feast of the Transfigura on. That wasn't by human design, but it is a nice feast on which to return. You don't need a reserva on for any daily Mass, but please wear a mask at all Masses un l such me that it is no longer necessary to do so. Please make note at home of all the me changes!
Once again I would like to publicly express my gra tude to Father David, Deacon Peter, our permanent deacons, and our parish staff for the smooth handling of spiritual and physical business ac vi es during my retreat. I have already heard many compliments about all of their efforts in my absence . This is a great comfort to me as a pastor, but also I believe a great blessing for us as a parish family. Allstate Insurance has made a fortune over the last 40 years telling us you're in good hands with them. In our case, at St. Luke, it is surely true, praise God, that you are in good hands, whether I am present or away! And to God be all the glory!
We shall see how it develops as we hopefully get closer to a "normal" schedule again at St. Luke!
God bless you all,

A NOTE FROM FATHER DAVID
When the Stay at Home Order came out in March, I began thinking about the various ways in which Catholic families might use this me to reevaluate their family lifestyle. Two days later, I called a dear friend of mine—we’ll call her Julie—to get her perspec ve. Julie is very intelligent—she doesn’t have a doctorate in philosophy or anything, but I would even describe her as an intellectual. Likewise, I have always thought of her as quite the professional woman, dressing smartly and pursuing a career of her own, even a er she married one of our classmates and started a family. Her husband’s parents and others were a huge help when her first baby came, so that Julie could get back to work. But today, Julie, who is about my age, is a homemaker. Perhaps you’re more familiar with the more recent term: stay-at-home mom. In March it became clear to me that many parents were going to have to adjust to being at
home with their kids much more during the rest of the ’19-’20 school year. (And who would have guessed it might extend to the coming school year!?) So, on March 24, I gave Julie a call. I figured that from her experience she would have some good insights into what it takes to live as a family at home, without jobs, school, or ac vi es to go to all the
me; and besides, I was curious to know how Julie, the professional intellectual, had come to the decision to step away from her various jobs in the first place. Here is some of what she said:
“I was laid off, so in a certain sense I was lucky that that decision was partly made for me. My decision, though, was that I wouldn’t look for another job. I decided maybe I should just lean into it. I was worried at first that maybe I wouldn’t find fulfillment, so I had to be crea ve in managing my me—if I wanted to read a book or take on some project [that I found fulfilling], how would I manage things I needed to do at home so that I could also do that?”
But maybe fulfillment isn’t only found in side projects. “I did think I needed an outside intellectual s mula on, that it would be too exhaus ng to just do ‘menial stuff’ all day, but it depends on how you look at homemaking. It’s a more engaging mental exercise than I gave it credit for. More goes into making a meal than simple drudgery. It is challenging, if you approach it the right way, and also you can become competent at it and take pride in your work. But that only comes with me: competence is something that comes with me and prac ce. It’s the same competence and pride that you would take in, say, a project at work; and in a certain sense, it’s be er, because it’s not a project you’ve done for a company, but for people you love, for your own family, so it feels more fulfilling.”
Now you can see why I called Julie a “homemaker;” for her, the “economy” of household management is empha cally not an intellectually empty, anybody-could-do-it, I-have-no-skills-or-goals-in-life kind of work! Maybe this is how our materialist society, which only values money and stuff, portrays the homemaker. We’ve even changed the term to “stay-at-home,” as if a homemaker never goes anywhere or does anything produc ve!
Julie shared some thoughts about this too: “Maybe some women feel like they would be freeloading on their husband’s work by si ng at home like a consumer that contributes nothing materially, while their husband goes out and does the ‘important’ work. Well, their being at home, and the things they do at home, are an incredibly material contribu on to the family! Bookkeeping? Organizing? Laundry? Teaching children to read? Cooking? Becoming good at all these things is a very valuable material contribu on to the household! (Even before you have kids.) It’s insul ng when people ask if ‘all you do’ is take care of your family. Um, that’s not lousy, that’s huge!! It’s our consumerist society that makes us look at everything in terms of dollars and cents—as though if you aren’t bringing in money, your work is not valuable—and that’s not true.”
“Maybe other women are moms who have outsourced a lot of things like child care or school. Should someone else take care of the kids all day so I can do my thing? Think about what my thing is, and ask: why is that your thing?” Hearing Julie say these things, I wonder whether in fact the real challenge lies in homemaking, and whether career can some mes—not always, but some mes—be used as an escape. Depending on the job, I wonder if for some people it is easier to work 9-5 and then throw a frozen pizza in the oven (or, more commonly now, let each member of the household find something to eat on their own schedule) than to face the challenge of making a home.
Since that March conversa on, many have lost their jobs due to the shutdown. Julie’s husband is himself out of a job now, as I learned from her the other day. But while he looks for a new job, they are commi ed to the course they have chosen. “You would be surprised how you can be happy with a lot less than you think you can,” Julie tells me.
I asked Julie what she would advise for parents who found themselves, by choice or by COVID, in a new situa on as homemakers, perhaps with kids at home more than before. “I would say, ‘Lean in.’ Say to yourself, ‘Okay, this is what we’re doing right now; it’s just how it is. So I might as well actually do it! I’m just really going to lean in to homemaking, and I will try to understand why my friends who are stay-at-home moms do this.’”
So lean in, friends. Homemaking is a challenge, yes, but you’re a be er parent and teacher than you know. You can do it; and with me and prac ce, you will do it really well.
