Congratulations Adriana Tapia on your 15th Birthday!
Welcome to our newly baptized! Izaak Xavier Sechler
Last week, I took this opportunity to express to you, our parish family, my gratitude for the many ways in which you make
the mission of the parish of Saint James possible. Together, we do our best to bring to the people of God, both locally and
in other parts of our beautiful state, the word and the love of Christ. Your efforts and your dedication do not go unnoticed.
Father Carlos and I were glad to receive a letter from Catholic Charities West Virginia recognizing your support of the work
of Catholic Charities West Virginia.
Thank you for your faith in our work. As we begin the second half of the year, we wanted to take the time to communicate our thanks
and appreciation for your continued support, and offer our sincere appreciation to the parishioners of St. James-Charles Town for
their outpouring of generosity in the second collection this past Christmas. The overall diocesan-wide collection raised $170,000
which helps us in our work toward our mission of providing caring and compassionate services to people in need in West Virginia.
Many thanks to you and your parish for joining us in providing Catholic charity, compassion and good will to our neighbors in need.
In Charity and Hope,
Beth Zarate
Chest Executive Officer

Our Crucifix and Its Titulus
One of the most impressive features in the apse of the church is
the monumental crucifix suspended in the arch. Rather than be-
ing in the familiar shape of a Latin cross, the wood is shaped
more like the Greek letter “tau” or “T” which many believe to
be the cross shape used in Roman crucifixions.
The last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, the tau, was transcribed
as a “T” in Greek. The stylized Tau cross came to represent the
means by which Christ reversed the disobedience of Adam and
became our Savior as the “New Adam.”
The titulus or “title” that Pilate ordered to be placed on the
cross has an unusual, though again authentic, depiction on our
crucifix. Most often, one sees only the abbreviation for the
Latin inscription Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudæorum -- that is,
INRI. But according to Scripture, this titulus (“Jesus of Naza-
reth, King of the Jews”) was written in three languages: He-
brew, Latin and Greek. The crucifix at Saint James not only
has the entire phrase written out, but it appears in those three
languages:
דתתואישוצמלךתיתדריב
IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM
ΟΥΤΟΣ ΕΣΤΙΝ Ο ΒΑΣΙΑΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ

We are currently in need of the following volun-teer positions for the 2018-2019 Religious Educa-tion calendar: Sunday (9:30am-10:45am) FCP1 Catechist aide FCP1 Youth aide 3rd Grade Catechist aide 5th Grade Catechist 6th Grade Catechist aide Hall Monitors Wednesday (5:30-6:30pm) FCP1 Youth aide Hall Monitors All volunteers MUST have completed all 3 steps of VIRTUS and MUST attend the Faith Formation Catechetical Evening on August 25, 2018 from 5-9:30pm. Help us feed the hungry! Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped us in June! St. James will once again partner with Mountaineer Food Bank in August to provide a mobile food bank to help feed the hungry in the county. Volun-teers are needed from approximately
9:30am to 2pm on Thursday August 9th o help with this im-portant community project. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Allie Enos at [email protected] or 304-725-5558 x231. What is a mobile food bank? Mountaineer Food Bank will arrive with a truck of donated food. Volunteers will sort food and help set up tables and canopies. Once we are set up, individuals will drive up, provide us with a basket or box that the volunteers will fill with food and than give back to them. It is a very simple pro-cess that helps so many hungry families.

We encourage you to become an active member of our faith community. Join us at daily Mass and Adoration, attend one of our social events, check out any of our ministries, and find your niche. You can pick up a parish registration form in
the narthex or parish office. Just drop your completed form in the offertory basket or bring it by the office. Get connected, get involved, register today.
BECOMING CATHOLIC at St. James begins with a religious education process called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Through RCIA, people learn about the Catholic Faith and prepare to become full members of our Catholic family. This process is also available for children and teens.
CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME is a program that provides a warm welcome to all desiring to return to the Catholic Church. Voice your concerns and get an-
swers to your questions. Contact Linda Bryan at [email protected].
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION As adults, our second most important job is raising our
children in our Catholic faith. (Our most important job, of course, is maintaining our own relationship with our Heavenly Father.) Families registered in our parish may enroll their children in religious education as early as the age of three. Contact the Allie Enos at [email protected]. We have a variety of adult faith formation opportunities during the year and they are always listed in the weekly
bulletin and monthly calendars.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM is the initiation into the Christian community of the Church and an invitation to a lifelong vocation of holiness. Registered families may celebrate the baptism of their child after attending a Baptism class that is usually offered on the last Sunday of each month at 1 pm. Register for the class with Chris Pifer at [email protected].
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE celebrates a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. If you are a registered, active member of the parish considering
this vocation, congratulations! You and your fiancé will be in our prayers in the coming months. Contact Carol Dindinger at least six months before your de-sired wedding date to begin the marriage preparation program. Wedding dates will not be held or set prior to the meeting. Contact Carol at [email protected].
NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING is the general title for the scientific, natural, and
moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies. NFP respects God’s unitive and procreative design for married love. To learn more contact, [email protected].
SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING is a ritual of healing formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction. Contact the parish office to arrange for an anointing when you or a family member are preparing for surgery, hospitalized, or nearing death.
THE HISTORIC CHAPEL OF ST. PETER in Harpers Ferry celebrates a “Tourist”
Mass on Sundays at 11:00 am. The Chapel is also open to visitors on weekends from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm most weekends from May through October.
