ASTRA’s Mission

Our primary mission is public education about the benefits of federally-funded scientific and engineering research & development in the nation’s economic development, workforce preparedness, national security, and ability to innovate and compete in a complex global economy. ASTRA conducts facts-based STEM policy research, public education and the convening of experts and organizing of thought leaders to achieve its mission.

ASTRA measures, researches, convenes, communicates, and links diverse communities of interest across the STEM ecosystem. ASTRA stakeholders include companies, academic institutions, foundations, media, students, government agencies and international organizations.

A Systemic Approach to Policy Practice & Solutions

We apply a systems approach to designing and implementing projects that address Research, Policy and Practice. Our goal is to ensure that America continues to strengthen its innovation capacity in an increasingly connected world without borders. We measure economic impact, job creation, funding flows and constantly report on innovation and STEM developments through a robust Web platform and social media that includes more than 150 companies, universities and foundations. These entities in turn represent an estimated 3.5 million U.S. scientists, researchers, STEM professionals, students, economics and community-based groups.

Connecting the “Silos”

ASTRA is known for well-vetted research that informs policy decisions and catalyzes unconnected “silos” of concern across the vast expanse of institutions and individuals involved with STEM, R&D, innovation and competitiveness. ASTRA is a tax-exempt IRC 501(c)(3) educational research organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Brief History of ASTRA

ASTRA was founded in 2000 by a group of individuals and companies who recognized the challenges created by inadequate and imbalanced funding for the federal science & technology (S&T) portfolio. ASTRA is associated with key innovation and competitiveness initiatives that have changed the substance and understanding of public concern since 2000. Since its inception, ASTRA has fostered recognition that our future peace and prosperity as a nation depends upon our innovation capacity. In recent years, ASTRA has expanded its focus beyond policy research toward a more holistic, futures- focused commitment embracing research policy and practice for a global STEM Innovation Agenda.

Our Capabilities: ASTRA links thousands of individuals and hundreds of major STEM organizations into a community of practice that focus- es upon specific topics and solutions.

Connectivity & Global Community of Practice

ASTRA engages 63,000 scientists, engineers, teachers, researchers, industry leaders, public officials, teachers, parents, students, community organizations and others through a robust technology platform that supports three Web Sites. ASTRA is partnered with the Global NETGeneration of Youth in our joint worldwide outreach to younger students, and it is launching the new ASTRA STEM & Innovation Scholars Program in 2014 with major foundation support.

Timely and Insightful Communications & Analysis

ASTRA maintains this “virtual” community of organizations and individuals through two key Web Sites, including www.usinnovation.org We distribute the U.S. Innovation Today news aggregator and are an established provider of STEM metrics relating to the STEM workforce, STEM education, and R&D Connectedness through our State STEM Report Cards (annual series) and State Innovation Vital Signs Publications.

Recent EdTech Revolution Report

ASTRA published the acclaimed EdTech Revolution in Education Report in 2013 — it was launched at the U.S. News & World Report STEM Education Summit in June 2013. It celebrates the unlimited possibilities that technology provides as a tool for transformation. The book contains contributions from 98 contributors. It champions partnership development to create synergies among all education stakeholders so that we can achieve together what no one institution can do alone. For free copies, go to http://store.usinnovation.org

ASTRA By the Numbers

Since 2001, more than 1 million individuals have used ASTRA’s State STEM Report Cards. ASTRA produces periodic statistical reports for STEM Education and Innovation Developments and they are free to the public. ASTRA has also supplied Innovation Project Coordination Services for the U.S. Center for Innovation (Media, Conflict & Peacebuilding Center) for the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP).

ASTRA Research Projects — Highlights

Major ASTRA policy research has been performed for the U.S. Technology Administration, U.S. Dept. of Commerce (The Innovation Vital Signs Project), the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Raytheon Foundation, the Rockwell Collins Foundation, the Verizon Foundation, the Alcoa Foundation, the Northrup Grumman Foundation and the David & Lucille Packard Foundation.

ASTRA is also conducting research for the Cisco Foundation on successful STEM programs nationwide and is involved in significant data visualization programs for policy-related data for other organizations.

Adobe Digital Government solutions enable agencies to make, manage, mobilize and measure the information, experiences and knowledge needed to achieve their mis-sions.

Government agencies use Adobe technology to power digi-tal content creation and management that most effectively engages citizens; deliver rapid forms creation, secure docu-ment workflows and unbreakable digital signatures needed to increase business process efficiency; create, manage and share knowledge that agency teams need to accom-plish their mission; and to do it all with the most advanced content-centric security and analytics available. With 25 years of proven innovation, Adobe is transform-ing the way agencies interact —real-time, on any device. In February, Adobe announced it is answering President Barack Obama’s challenge to bring technology education and teacher training to American schools by committing

over $300 million in software and professional development to the White House’s ConnectED initia-

tive.

This commitment is among the largest to date, bringing the collective total of private sector donations

to over $1 billion. Read more about this at the press release found at: www.adobe.com/news-room/pressreleases/201402/022814AdobeWhiteHouseConnectED.html
