How do you squeeze in the memorable moments of 4 years of high school and

the 35 years that happen after that, in one book? That would be a big challenge, especially if your budget is only enough to cover 50 leaves and nothing more. You need your mind’s eye to recall the beautiful images of days gone by … those afternoons in the SMC quadrangle spent chattering away with classmates, as you waited for just the right moment to pack your bags and go home … the time when you went on a camping trip to Batulao, that gave you the first taste of what it would feel like to be away from the comforts of home … the times when you had to painfully decide between attending a soiree or finishing a scrapbook project for Literature … The stories are numerous to write about, even more when you have to multiply that by the number of different versions and recollections of all of 155 graduates of the Batch ’78.So here’s a simple PICTURE BOOK, to help jog your memory, and make it easier for you to relive the carefree years of high school, and the warm feeling that comes with being able to reconnect with one’s long-lost soul sisters.

… Start turning the pages of this BOOK and let out that smile, as you leaf through pictures and memories. It has already been 35 years since we set out to conquer the world, but boy, does it feel like it was only yesterday …

Now, find a comfortable spot, and listen to a familiar tune back in our day …

♪♫♪♫♪ “Life, so they say, is but a game and we let it slip away.Love, like the autumn sun, should be dyin’ but it’s only just begun.Like the twilight in the road up ahead, they don’t see just

where we’re goin’.And all the secrets in the Universe, whisper in our earsAnd all the years will come and go, take us up,

always up.We may never pass this way again. We may never pass this way again. We may never pass this way again.“Dreams, so they say, are for the fools and they let ‘em drift

away.

Peace, like the silent dove, should be flyin’ but it’s only just begun.

Like Columbus in the olden days, we must gather all our courage.

Sail our ships out on the open sea. Cast away our fearsAnd all the years will come and go, and take us up, always

up.We may never pass this way again. We may never pass this

way again. We may never pass this way again.” ♫♪♫♪♫

March 1978 was a busy month for Batch ‘78. Being the graduating class of that year, we had to practice a whole month

for our graduation program – singing old songs in a new way for our graduation Mass, walking in the right cadence and rhythm in preparation for our march, from our classrooms at the Marian Hall to the Chapel, where the rites were going to be held, and going up the stage to receive our diplomas with pride befitting a true Marian.

As the commencement program ended, all of us had mixed feelings. It was a happy time for everyone as we finally reached the end of our sheltered high school life and eagerly awaited our entry into college. It was a sad time as we bid goodbye to friends with whom we shared many secrets and life’s experiences.

Like any graduating high school batch, we had our share of unforgettable moments. Who could forget –… the volleyball competitions that instantly sparked

wars between sections

… Songfest and the endless hours of practice

… trips to the Dean of Discipline for not wearing “sando” under one’s P.E. blouse or coming to school late and missing the flag ceremony

… camping at Batulao and having softdrinks for breakfast

… the Bivouac at Teresa, Rizal, including lopsided tents, night ambushes and river crossing

… CAT under the hot afternoon sun

… the High School Fair every February transforming us all into “busy bees”, as we planned gimmicks for our booths

… the soirees with boys from Ateneo, Don Bosco & Claret that made our parents spend long hours in the car parked outside of the place where the party was being held

… the special relationships we had with girls from the lower and / or higher batches

… Recollections and Retreats, and the accompanying “bull sessions” that eventually turned foes into friends

… creative excuses for not wearing regulation white Bantex sneakers for P.E.

… the day the NCEE results were announced

… the unofficial Graduation Ball at the Holiday Inn and a rather unique souvenir that looked like a condiment saucer

As John Travolta blasted into the disco scene in the movie, “Staying Alive”, so did we march on to embrace the uncertainty that college life had to offer us.

As the first test tube baby was born that year, so did we experience a rebirth as we started to chart the course of our future lives in preparation for the real world.

It was the best of times. And for Batch ‘78, it truly was.

“It has been said that friends can go long

periods of time without speaking, and never

question the friendship. These friends pick up

like they just spoke yesterday, regardless of how

long it has been or how far away they live from

each other. They don’t hold grudges;

they understand that life is busy……

and… you will ALWAYS love them.”
