William Jewell College officially marks the beginning of the new academic year with a formal convocation. The convocation also recognizes community leaders receiving the College’s Yates Medallion for Distinguished Service. The convocation is free and open to the public. The speaker for this year’s convocation is Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James.

Cardinal Term Beginning January 8, 2012 Cardinal Term revives the tradition of William Jewell’s informal“Winterim,” a series of courses that were taught in January between falland spring semesters prior to 1995. The noncredit courses, which beginthe week of January 8, feature a wide variety of topics. Seminar length
and format will vary by topic and instructor; both day and evening sessions are scheduled. A full schedule of Cardinal Term courses,dates and times will be announced this fall. All sessions are open to the public.

Commencement Saturday, May 12 The Celebration of Commencement honors the achievements of Jewell students as they complete their Jewell Journeys and begin a newchapter in their lives. William Jewell College joins the ranks of the NCAA Division IIand the Great Lakes Valley Conference as a provisional member during the 2011-12 season. For the first time since1991, men’s and women’s swimming will be a part of the athletic lineup at Jewell. The Cardinals enjoy a championshipathletic tradition that stretches back more than a century.The College fields 20 varsity teams including football, men’sbasketball, women’s basketball, baseball, women’s softball,men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’sand men’s indoor and outdoor track and field, men’s andwomen’s cross country, women’s and men’s tennis, women’sand men’s golf and women’s and men’s swimming. This session will lay the foundation for understanding the Jewish ethos and worldviews. It references the College’s corecurriculum, which is organized around an examination of what constitutes the “Responsible Self.”
