Unit 15 LO1
Websites Website
structure eg files, folders, hypertext links;
multimedia;
web blogs;
really simple syndication (RSS) feeds;
pod casts;
platform compatibility eg operating system, browser software,
plug-ins;
testing eg website files, links, browser, performance
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure We will need to host a website in order to begin see its
structure.
Task 1

Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure The Apache software runs as a service on the
PC/server.
Whilst on a server it should start automatically.
On our PC we will need to start and stop it manually.
Tutorial - Let us do this now.
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure Task 2 –
Having started the apache service now –
check the services now running on the PC.
Can you identify the apache service.
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure MySql
What is MySql?
Part of the stack!
MySql also runs as a service.
Task 3
Start the MySql service and then identify the service name.
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure So MySql provides a database service.
This allows us to create dynamic web sites.
We will look at MySql later.
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure We now have a hosting service –
You can do this at home as well.
You can start and stop the Apache service.
You can start and stop the MySql service.
We do not have a website on this hosting service yet.
What folders and files do we have as part of our hosting service?
Use windows explorer to look at the folders and files.
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure Task 4
Use windows explorer to look at the folders and files.
Can you find the file named php.ini?
Do not change anything!
Where do we add our website pages?
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure Task 5
Create a folder (use your student id) inside HTDOCS.
Copy your web pages into your new folder (using file explorer)
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure How do you run your website (via the host service)?
Task 6
Open a browser.
Enter: localhost/student folder id/your landing page.html
Care needed here as Apache/php etc is case sensitive.
Do your pages run?
Unit 15 LO1
Website Structure Hypertext links.
What is a hypertext link?
How do we code a hypertext link?
Unit 15 LO1
In your HTML page –
<a href=“page to link to”>Text user clicks on</a>Or
<a href=“page to link to”><img src=“image.nnn” /></a>Or
<a href=“page to link to”>”><img src=“image.nnn” />Text user clicks on</a>

Image Only
Image and Text
Website Structure Task 7
Add hypertext links to your pages.
Re-copy your pages to your host.
Test navigation works.
Now add hyperlinks to link to other students pages (at least 3 different sites), and test.
Extension: use images in your hyperlinks.
