The Dinosaurs

• Dinosaurs lived between 245 million and 1.6 million years ago!

• There were carnivores (meat eater)• There were Herbivores (plant eater)• Some walked on two legs • Some walked on four legs• Some could fly• Some lived in the water• Some question over how they were wiped out

Dinosaur History

The Different Ages or Periods of Dinosaur History

The TRIASSIC Period

• The Triassic world was not unlike Earth today• Lizard like animals mainly stayed on land• Triassic was about 245 million years ago• Many of them were carnivores (meat eaters)• Some had sharp teeth, and some didn’t• Mammals found themselves increasingly

threatened by reptiles

The TRIASSIC period

• During the Triassic period reptiles strengthened their hold on life on land

• Dinosaurs appeared in the late Triassic

The JURASSIC Period

• The Jurassic period started about 208 million years ago

• The climate became wetter and warmer• The sea levels were higher than they are

today• The Jurassic period was an eventful time for

reptilian life as a whole

The CRETACEOUS period

• In the Cretaceous period there was an explosive growth in life

• Cretaceous period was similar in some ways to the world we know today

• The Cretaceous period began 144 million years ago

• The Earths climate and sea levels were up to 200m higher than they are today

Life in the CRETACEOUS Period

Page 14: A Presentation By: Alistair Swain. The Dinosaurs.

The TERTIARY Period• Early Tertiary began about 1.6 million years ago• Mammals had already existed for at least 150

million years• Most of the animals during this period were

about the size of today’s mice and were nocturnal

• Late Tertiary began about 23 million years ago• Mammals continued to flourish as the climate

became cooler and drier, continents were less scattered and North and South America became joined

Plant eaters and grazers became partners

Why they died

There are two assumptions as to how and why the dinosaurs became extinct. Scientists cannot agree on either extinction theory.

Firstly some believe a massive meteorite up to 15km across smashed into the earth destroying the majority of life.

Secondly that the Ice Age wiped out the majority of life.
