NOTES FROM Marlin FriedIf you’ve stayed in the valley and are enduring the heat, I hope you’re enjoying some of our summer programs. New Frontiers offered 19 “classes” this summer totaling 120 classroom hours, four “Out-to-Lunches” and a very interesting tour of Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. Although some will be finished by the time you get to read this, there are still a number of interesting classes and events coming up. Check out the classes and the social events on our website. You’ll probably find something you’ll enjoy. (If you’ve found a more pleasant locale for your summer days, you can ignore all of this – but no gloating.)
You may realize that we’ve been stressing the need for volunteering this year. Some of you just want to attend the classes or other events and some of you are busy with other organizations. But it takes people to run New Frontiers and we are a volunteer organization. Elections for officers will be during the first of November and there are several positions to be filled. The nominating committee is looking for people who may be interest-ed. All of the committees need help also. Talk to the Co-chairs, other people that you may know who are on the committee, or attend the committee meetings. All committee and all Council meetings are open to members. I think you’ll find volunteering within New Frontiers (or within MCC or the community) enjoyable and not too arduous. To all of you who have volunteered this year, I sincerely thank you.
On a slightly different note, an organization that isn’t willing to change or grow probably won’t continue to exist. Although MCC puts some restrictions on us, we’re much more limited by ourselves. Could we be offering additional sessions of popular classes, more classes on special topics, additional excursions, travel, ride sharing, more interest groups? We just need members who are willing to pursue their ideas. If you have ideas about how to make New Frontiers even better, bring them up. And don’t accept “no” until you’re convinced it can’t be done. Enjoy the rest of the summer, but think about it.
FROM THE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
The 2017 Fall semester kicks off with Open House on Friday, September 15, followed by Pro-Class online registration on Tuesday, September 19, starting at 9:00 a.m.
Our ongoing classes such as Great Decisions and Coffee & Conversation II will continue. Brain Develop-ment and Aging and Oral Traditions of the American Indians will be back due to popular demand.
Newcomer Susan Paige will be offering two spiritual classes: “Kuan Yin: Connecting with the Goddess of Compassion” and “Reiki Level 1” for those of you who want to continue your studies in Reiki. Susan will also be offering “Toxic Free Life” so we can learn to avoid substances which are harmful to our bodies.
For those of you who enjoy the great outdoors, Nancy Spence will take you “Exploring Nana’s Secret Trail” in the towering Superstition Mountains. We have a few Travelogues lined up for you armchair travelers - “Walking the Cather Trail” and “Quiet Flows the Volga”.
For you history buffs, we offer “Crimea: Its Crisis & Identity”, “America and the World - A Diplomatic History, Part I” and “Prohibition in America”. For the nostalgic, we offer “The Beat Goes On” and “The Beatles: From Liverpool to Abbey Road”.
For those of us who are interested in Arizona history and hiking at the same time, you can join “We Were Citizens...And Now We Were Not” as first you tour the Museum of Arizona History and the Chandler Museum and then visit the site to learn about the Japanese who were interned at the Butte Relocation Camp on the Pima Gila River Reservation.
Since our health and wellbeing is of great importance to us, we have a few classes which center around the theme of protecting ourselves - “Protecting Yourself from Fraud and Scams”, “Fire and Fall Safety in the Home, “Personal Safety” and “Lifesaver” which is a must-go-to class since it teaches us how to admin-ister CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator. For the health-conscious, you can check out “Stress, Hormones and Belly Fat” as well as Dr. Sonny Sampedro’s “Better Posture”.
For a change of pace, you can explore the ocean with “Technological Advances in Marine Biology” or learn about “The Northern Lights”.
Our thanks go out to those of you of who worked hard to recruit guest presenters and labored over preparing the class proposals for us. For those of you who are still sitting on the fence, there’s still time to send us your class proposal. The deadline for the Fall semester is July 1 and November 1 for the Spring semester.
Margo Heaps, Outgoing Curriculum Co-Chair
Margo served the Curriculum Committee as one of the co-chairs from August 2015 to August 2017. She used the skills from her career to settle into her leader-ship role: meetings, schedules, and facilitating classes as well as facilitating facilitators filled her personal calendar. Throughout it all she brought kindness and humor to those around her. She was tough when she had to be and supportive when the situation called for support. I know this. Margo trained me in the basics and Jennifer Wong, the new lead chair of curriculum has agreed to continue answering my many, many questions. I am Judith Slentz, the new co-chair of the Curriculum Committee: August, 2017 to ___.
Margo has already planned at least one course for this fall. So, she is only leaving Curriculum leadership. She will remain a vital part of the Curriculum Committee.
Thanks, Margo Heaps!

ON THE TRAIL WITH ALLAN ZISNER
Hello All,
I am sure many have heard I am hiking the Arizona Trail and I look forward to completing it by the middle of May. The Arizona Trail is approximately 800 miles, starting at the Mexico/USA border south of Sierra Vista and ending at the Stateline Campground in Utah. To view an overall map of the trail, please visit the Arizona Trail’s website at http://www.aztrail.org/at_map.html.
I began the hike on March 3rd with Bob Dukelow. We both hiked for six days starting at the border and leaving it at Canelo Pass Trailhead. We hiked 35 miles.
I returned to the trail by myself on March 13th starting at Gabe Zimmerman Trailhead near the community of Vail. I hiked six days to Molino Basin Campground near the base of Mt Lemmon for 52 miles.
Taking a short break returning to the trail on March 23rd north of Mt Lemmon and getting resupplied with food and an opportunity to take a bucket shower. I also was joined by a friend, Roy Wiseman, who joined in the hike to Roosevelt Lake Dam. This section of the hike was 114 miles. Roy continued to hike by himself while I took a short break.
I returned to the trail on April 5th, joining up with Roy at Sunflower. We both hiked to LF Ranch, west of Payson. Unfortunately, Roy strained his Achilles ten-don. I am sure it was very painful for him to hike, but somehow he was able to mussel through it. Here we arranged to have a hot shower, a comfortable bed to sleep in and a hot meal. The next day, we arranged with the owner of the ranch to take us to town, Payson, to get a ride later in the day back to Mesa. Sadly to say, Roy’s hiking days for this trek were over. We hiked a total of 52 miles.
Most recently, I completed a section starting south of Flagstaff on April 19th hiking for seven days for a distance of 82 miles. This Thursday, I go to the Grand Canyon where I have to wait for a backcountry permit to camp within the canyon. My goal is to hike to State-line Campground in Utah where the trail ends.
On a side note, I only saw seven javelinas, one green snake, several jack rabbits and heard on rattlesnake. I plan to have a class to share my experiences some-time in the fall, probably sometime in October.
Remembering Rev. Wiley White, a long time New Frontiers’ member, and brother of member Dr. David White. Wiley taught art classes for NFs for a number of years. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Catching up with Sheila Le Sueur, author and early member of New Frontiers. Sheila has published three books including her latest, Open Every Door, the biography of Mary Martin Mottley of Hampshire UK, later known at Marie de Tocqueville. Sheila credits several New Frontiers’ members and staff members from Mesa Community College for encouraging her to write her stories. Our congratulations to Sheila.
